50 Fab Paper-Pieced Stars

Please join us in working through Caraol Doak's book "50 Fabulous Paper-Pieced Stars". Starting the first week in January we will be making one star a week, starting with Alabama and ending in December with Wyoming. If you have this book, please join us. there will be no patterns or tutorials given and there is no sign ups required. Do as few or as many as you like. We would love to see your beautiful stars so please post their picture here.

skrucker 12-12-2011 07:13 AM

Sounds like a GREAT idea! I've had this book for a long time and have been looking for an excuse to start making some of the stars in it. One block a week doesn't sound too difficult either. There are other quilts I want to work on for 2012 so one block a week will fit in nicely.

PokerDiva 12-12-2011 07:36 AM

GREAT! Looking forward to seeing your stars.

Sounds good to me

goldendog55 12-12-2011 08:32 AM

I'm getting this book from the library first, and then, i'll buy it. I'd like to participate.

Iraxy 12-12-2011 08:43 AM

This may be just the push I need to get my stars done. I made one while at a friends house and promised myself I would do some more but haven't.

moonwork42029 12-12-2011 02:10 PM

I've made some of the stars and they are fun to do...some of them aren't, lol.

But I have bookmarked this link and will see how the fabric falls in January.

Her instructions are clear....however...in my very humble opinion, she has some funky fabric combos as samples...it will be interesting to see how others make their color choices.

PokerDiva 12-12-2011 02:45 PM

Moonwork, you can do just the ones that you think will be fun. No block police here. LOL.

whinnytoo 12-13-2011 04:15 AM

fabulous idea! I have the book and love paper piecing so why havnt I done these??? Thanks for the suggestion and motivation.

tomilu 12-13-2011 04:22 AM

I think I still have the book and if so, would like to participate. Mine will be used for Quilts of Valor.

Thinking about it!

Chay 12-13-2011 05:53 AM

I was just looking at this book on Amazon. I'm in the process of making a Dear Jane but I love paper piecing. I've always wanted to do either a blue and white or red and white quilt and I wonder if these stars could be done with variations of just two colors or whether a third color would be necessary. Any advice?

PokerDiva 12-13-2011 06:04 AM

GREAT!!! We are getting quite a little group here. I love these stars and can't wait to start. As for using 2 colors, it would work for some but not all. Most need at least three and sometimes more but you can do just the ones that would fit with your idea. Also with 50 blocks you could make 2 quilts. You could actually get more blocks if you continue after Wyoming and Combine sections for even more blocks which is what I might do.

This sounds good. I have -Carol Doak 40 Bright and Bold Paper-Pieced Blocks, I just finished a class which was in a year long. I used probably six different fabrics. I made all of my background fabric the same, while others in the class, mixed it up. At the end, the ones with different background fabric had a hard time finding additional fabric to combine all of the blocks. But they all looked great, just all so different. I would love to get this book and participate . Maybe I can still put this on my Christmas list. My boys are always looking to get me a gift that they may end up getting something from it. LOL

Fabaddict 12-13-2011 06:47 AM

sounds interesting, I might just join you.

SheriR 12-13-2011 06:54 AM

How much background fabric do you suppose you need if you the same on each block? I have the perfect fabrics I could use for these.

paintmejudy 12-13-2011 07:06 AM

This is going to be great! Terrific book full of wonderful patterns. I have made a few, now looking forward to making stars with a common fabric to give it a unified look, instead of the scrappy quilts I usually make. So glad you organized this thread, Florence.

I purchased this book several years ago. It continues to be my all time favorite book for paper piecing. I wnt to Kinkos and had the binding reomoved from the book , and put the book into a 3 ring binder. It so much easier to make the copies.
I would join you on this journey , but have made all the patterns( some many many times) . It will be exciting to see all the results.

PokerDiva 12-13-2011 07:18 AM

Good question. Not sure but on some of the blocks I have done I used two 5" and two 3 1/2" squares cut in half. This is just general. Times 50 blocks you can get a guesstamate.

I have this book enroute, I would love to join. One of my bucket list quilts is a PP one, about 50 x 50. It seems this would be a good lead in project. It sounds like fun, altho it will probably be like the pinwheels for me, I gotta lot of pinwheels in the spare bedroom waiting to be made into a quilt...but I know how to make a pinwheel now:)

PokerDiva 12-13-2011 09:03 AM

Sorry, I lied earlier. It should have been FOUR 5" and FOUR 3 1/2".

I just ordered the book and will be so excited to join this group! One of the reviews says that some of these stars have 60 pieces! One a week is quite enough for me. I am in the middle of a mystery quilt that is taking everything I have to keep up. It will be over in the first couple of weeks in January so I should be fine. Looking forward to it! Thank you for the wonderful idea!

greencat 12-13-2011 12:45 PM

Put me down as a maybe.....I have a few other big projects I want to do next year. I've had this book for a while and saw a real nice quilt done with these blocks.

SewExtremeSeams 12-13-2011 01:41 PM

:):)Posting so I can follow all of your creations since I don't have the book. I love pp.:):)

whitepine 12-13-2011 01:43 PM

I have enjoyed making this year's BOM stars so much that I just ordered the book in order to join in. Now.....to decide on colors. hmmmmmm Maybe I'll wait till I get the book.

PokerDiva 12-13-2011 01:49 PM

Looks like we may have a really nice group going. The more the merrier. To let you know my plan, I am going to use a focus fabric with many colors so that I will have a lot of choices in accent and background colors. That is the plan anyway. Also for those who want to join but don't have the book, I have been told that Amazon has used books that are in excellent condition and reasonable too.

Mariposa 12-13-2011 01:57 PM

Sounds like a great idea! I've had the book, and only done a couple of the stars. :)

Carsey 12-13-2011 07:27 PM

This sounds like a good one! I will get my book.

Blessings!
Carole

llamalady 12-14-2011 05:13 AM

I also have this book in route and can't wait to get started. Thank you for the inspiration. It should be fun!

ljs317 12-14-2011 05:49 AM

I could maybe do this! thinking....................................

DebbieJJ 12-14-2011 06:08 AM

I bought this book from another qb member last year......I've been wanting to start making these, and this is just the nudge I need to get started! Thanks!

I ordered my book from Amazon used for $13 and change. It is supposed to be in good condition with the cd included. Here's to hoping..

PokerDiva 12-14-2011 08:35 AM

Lucky you, I didn't get a CD and I bought mine new.

klgreene 12-14-2011 08:55 AM

Ok Poker Diva, you have set a little flame under my tushie. I don't have the book, but I do love PP, Am working on a Christmas Cactus at the moment. So I'm going to order the book, and mark this thread, and I'll be here one way or another. Katie

Jere 12-14-2011 10:29 AM

I am doing "The Farmer's Wife" with another group but have always wanted to do the stars. Carol Doak spoke at our quilt guild years ago and an "opportunity quilt" was made based on her book (with her blessing) I am going to give it a try. Thanks for giving us some encouragement to jump in and do things that are on the bucket list.

Jere

Deputydina 12-14-2011 10:34 AM

This sounds like fun. I have this book and would love to see the progress through the year.

Jeanine 12-14-2011 12:40 PM

I'm thinking about joining in. How small are the blocks? I don't have the book yet.
