I like your backwards part. Realy love the colors.

Ok I got the point after this weekend of weddings and a day or two to rest from all the dress sewing I will try and do the block.

Country Quilter 08-25-2007 06:19 AM

Your colors are fantastic and I don't think I would have noticed the backwards part if you hadn't mentioned it! LOL It looks great!!! And good for you for giving PPing a try....braver than me!!!! My last effort ended in the trash! You did a great job!!!

Mamapeach417 08-25-2007 06:30 AM

Love this block. Can't wait to try it too. The colors you all chose are so cool.

susan s. 08-25-2007 06:50 AM

It looks wonderful Sharon. Remember two things, Practice makes perfect (Or as nearly to it as we might get!) and Art is an individuals interpretation. Also beauty is in the eye of the beholder! So please learn to not judge your work too severely. I believe after all, that mistakes are so often the basis for new techniques and designs.

Yvonne 08-25-2007 09:24 AM

Sharon,
I am so proud of you! Your block is great. I told you you could do it!!! I'm so glad you proved me right. Way to go! I see absolutely NOTHING wrong with your block. Isn't paper piecing fun? And you learn so many new words too! (Side benefit?)

Vicki and Patsy, you too can do this. Trust me!!!

k_jupiter 08-25-2007 10:03 AM

Sharon. Great work! You learned something, I got some praise (egotistical little me) and you have a fine block to post on your wall. I see the little mistakes, I call them design elements when I do them. I am not going to tell you how many 1/8 sections I had to make to get this one right also. It is a visual puzzle when you are piecing it together.

If you get more comfortable with the process, there is a fine book out there (Carole Doak?) with 50 star patterns and a dvd video showing you how it all goes together, as well as some great tips on how to make the points all match. You might find someone who wants to give you a X-mass present of this fine book.

You made my day. Thanks.

I think your block is perfect just the way it is mimi! Sometimes that little "mistake" we make just makes it all the more interesting. Yours isn't "wrong"...it's unique! LOVE the sparklies!!! :D

Boo 08-25-2007 11:29 AM

Sharon, I am impressed, but yes I do see your sparkles. I am sure that if we ever met, you would have a piece of glitter on your cheek. You really did an amazing job with that block! I haven't even started thinking of our BOM with so many other projects going. Even my reproduction sampler is getting dusty. At some point, I will have to take some time away from the shop to work on my own projects.

patricej 08-25-2007 02:03 PM

SHARON!!!!! There you go again!!! You obviously don't realize it but your "backwards" part isn't backward at all. if real light hit that star from a certain angle, that's exactly where the light and dark would fall.

That is not a mistake. it's your inner talent pushing your self-doubt aside and taking control. :P

silly girl!

Well, I had to go back and take another look after what you wrote and you're exactly RIGHT!!! That's what it would look like if a light source hit it on that side. You're brilliant Patrice.

mimisharon 08-26-2007 10:08 AM

I am so humbled...y'all make me feel so good! I see what you mean, Patrice, thank you! I fixed a couple of the glaring mixups (yes, I learned way many more words, Yvonne  ) but for the most part I'm well pleased with it and I'm going to quilt it to a teal color to pull all the colors out to the brightest. I've had it hanging on the block planner by my bed since I did it and I love it.

I am proud of my self in not giving up before I could try it. I'm going to have to make myself pp every week or so to keep it fresh in my mind. We maybe should do one in the BOM more often (I can't believe I said that!!!!!)

Here is my version of Tim's Star. I sewed it to the back of a denim shirt. Finished 3 more for my sister's. Hope they like it as well as I do!
Annemarie--I got my color inspiration from your star. thanks.

Minda 08-26-2007 05:28 PM

What a clever idea. It looks great on the back of that shirt.

Country Quilter 08-26-2007 05:28 PM

Holy cow!!! that is awesome...never thought about the back of a shirt for a quilt block! Love the idea tho! Hmmm....I have a denim shirt in my closet!!

ceannastahr 08-26-2007 06:45 PM

Wow very colorful just jumps right out at you I love it

annmarie 08-26-2007 07:27 PM

Last week as I was sewing the binding on the wall hanging I made out of Tim's star I was thinking how it was too bad that so few of us made that star. I've been gone for a few days & looks like others have accepted Tim's challenge:
Sharon - your star is wonderful. The sparkles are so fitting. Now do another paperpieced something - Quick! pp really grows on you.
Mooreland (sorry I don't know your 1st. name) - your star is stunning too! What a great idea to applique it to something lots of people will see. Thanks for the idea.
Tim - as you may know, I love stars & I love paperpiecing. I just ordered 50 Fabulous Paper Pieced Stars by Carol Doak from Amazon - $12.22 with shipping! Thanks for the tip.

Have a great week everyone.

Oh no! Wait till you see the stars and then find out she designed the stars so all 1/8 stars are interchangable. I won't bore you with the numbers but it's in the millions of combinations.

Norah 08-27-2007 06:01 PM

My big drawback with this star is that I don't have a printer right now. Looking at the recent posts, I decided I can draft my own to be close to that design. Would that be okay with everyone, and can I still call it a Tim BOM?

susan s. 08-27-2007 07:01 PM

I'll take templates if you have em. I just bought a printer and am using it for the first time today.

Why of course Norah. How do you think I did it? Sometimes those of us who live in the middle of techno-civilization forget that others don't have everything at their disposal. In reality, if I didn't have a printer at work, I would be lost also.

Remember the finished size of the 1/4 blocks is 6x6. The real size is 6 1/2 x 6 1/2. Since you are paper piecing you only have to draw out the finished size. Make it look right for you. Ask questions.

Go gettum.

Susan s.

All templates were redrawn by Patrice in a whole slew of sizes. They can be found by going through this thread...

I'm back already!! Mission accomplished. Like Wow! am I behind. That's cool though because I'll be in Blockhead Heaven once I get started.

I've been reading through these posts and I've decided the best part about you all is how you encourage each other in your work. It gives me a warm sense of community. I'm not quite to the point where jumping on the blocks in is feasible time wise, but do look forward to the day I can post them alongside you. I am watching in utter fascination though, so keep up the great work, it's appreciated! :D

Country Quilter 09-01-2007 02:13 PM

patricej 09-01-2007 02:42 PM

no fair. i wanted to see the mistake, but you took it down and posted the beeeeeeeoooooooooooteeeeeeeeful and too-close-to-perfect-to-see-the-difference version. :P

amma 09-01-2007 02:46 PM

Thanks, but the picture does not do my mistake justice....LOL am still picking out stitches :D

lin 09-01-2007 03:06 PM

lin 09-01-2007 05:35 PM

Oh ok. Now I see it. That was hard to spot! You still did a fabulous job amma.

annmarie 09-01-2007 07:35 PM

Don't you just love it - we are our own worst critics. I suppose you have it all ripped & almost fixed by now, but I would have said LEAVE IT unique, unique, unique!!!

It is beautiful Amma! Nice fix! But like I said, I wouldn't have fussed with it! It was not noticeable until you said something! LOL but I bet it drove ya nuts huh?? LOL

Minda 09-02-2007 05:18 PM

Thank you all for the kind works, this is my first quilt block besides a nine patch. :D I may be hooked on paper piecing  I have the fabric cut and now I am tackling the maple leaf :D

ShellyQ 09-03-2007 01:26 AM

Your first quilt block after a 9 patch :!: Wow did you take a big leap  but you leapt so well :P Congrats you did a fabulous job on quite a tricky block.

I'm just starting to go through the BOMs. Even as I put the last stitch in my version of this block, I wasn't sure I liked it. After pressing and looking at it on the design wall, I loved it, even if it's not perfect.
