Hi Mirabelle, I'm supposed to be getting notices for every idividual post but that isn't how they're being sent. I get an email telling me I have 4 new posts added to the thread. So apparently they still don't have all the kinks worked out...or maybe they just don't care. My thoughts?... I sometimes think that they feel that we should be happy with what they give us.

JanieW 12-05-2011 07:32 AM

Good to see so many that are going to take part in this . The more the merrier.
Honchey you mentioned for the first block you were going to cut up the pp pattern to do some English Paper piecing. Where did you find the pp pattern? I only have templates and a line drawing.

I have a million preemie quilts to finish and get to the hospital before I will start this, but that first block is often in my thoughts, wondering how I am going to manage those pesky Y seams. I am counting on lots of help come January 3.

Mirabelle,
I have very few novelty fabrics as well so mine is going to be different, but that's ok with me.
On the grandkid topic, I was told the same as you for a few years, but number 6 is on the way. Don't give up. :)

Wholeheart Mom 12-05-2011 09:00 AM

Greetings!

I have the book and some fabric, but I am a feeling a bit intimidated by some of the blocks. I definitely will jump in and join you all on some of the easier blocks, and if you all hold my hand a little bit, I may even give one of the more challenging ones a try!

Anyway, just wanted to chime in.... I may post a picture of my fabrics later.

janRN 12-05-2011 09:14 AM

This is so great to see so many "new" faces. Believe me, I did the FWS and wouldn't have come close to completing it without the help, teaching, and encouragement from the others doing it. (Think 111 potholders--that's what I would have ended up with without all these friends.) I am very intimidated by the first block; I've done it 3 times and each one looks like sh&^%&! But I will do it a 4th or 5th time til I "get it"; that was the beauty of FWS. I learned so much--I'm a much better piecer and quilter than I was at the beginning of the project.

I don't see pp instructions either for block one; just templates and a line drawing. Since I did FWS with all templates, that' what I'm trying to do with this block. If there is a foundation pattern available, please let me know where it is. I've done Y seams before but so many in one little block isn't working real well for me. Thanks!

DonnaC 12-05-2011 10:10 AM

Thanks Honchey! I will be joining you guys on this journey. I came across this board a bit too late to join in the FWS fun, but I'm going to do my best to keep up with this one.

Honchey 12-05-2011 10:48 AM

Jan, Have you ever done english hand piecing?? I think this is the easiest way to do this block. I will have some photos ready for week one. It's not really hard it just takes a little more time. Anne

Honchey 12-05-2011 10:51 AM

JanieW, The foundation patterns (pping)are on the cd. you will need 4 pages of paper for 1 block.

JeanieG 12-05-2011 11:24 AM

According to what I am seeing, there is NO Foundation Pattern for A Beauty, the first block in the quilt. I think there are a few blocks without Foundation Patterns. There is a Line Diagram that you could probably print out and cut apart??? Any ideas ladies?

Anael 12-05-2011 01:01 PM

I'm trying to remember if I used foundation piecing but I don't know anymore.

Oh I remember what I did :D I marked the 1/4" seam lines, that way it's easier to do Y seams. No foundation piecing!

Yes, that was what I was thinking of doing Anael. Mark the seam line and cut around that so you have exact lines to sew on. That was the original way I learned to piece - many years ago. Instead of cutting on the "cutting" line and using the 1/4" foot.

mirabelle 12-05-2011 02:20 PM

Nope still no notifications. Will have to make sure I don't miss anything. For the first block (remember it is a test block I haven't really started) I ironed freezer paper to my fabric then cut my pieces very very carefully, I then drew on my 1/4 inch seam line on every piece, this will give you the exact spot to stop at in order to do your Y seams. Don't sew all the way to the edge of the fabric. Hope this helps

Yes Jeanie, There are several blocks that cannot be pp"d the normal way. Each block has a sheet with the templates. I looked at the rotary cutting....I like my phrasing better! The more I look at the first one I know I'll be english piecing. When I was recovering from knee replacement I did 500 hexagons. They are still in the plastic bag I brought home from the hospital...I find it relaxing every once in awhile to do some..
Now just to figure out the fabric for itfor the first block...My blocks are going to be fun and scrappy.

Honchey 12-05-2011 09:42 PM

Where is QuiltE????

I like the idea of doing English PP for A Beauty. I have never tried it, but I have watched tutorials/videos and it seems doable. Do you plan on posting a tutorial that is specific to "A Beauty"?

You can use the English PPing for any block... Print out the line diagram and color it with crayons to make sure you're sewing the pieces correctly...I'm going to use EPP for several of the blocks that have alot of the inset/y seams. It will take more time to do because of cutting out the many template pieces. You cannot use the line diagram. it prints out close to 1/8 of an inch too small and every time I adjust my printer to a bigger size it defaults to 100 % and even if it came out correct ...cutting out the pieces...some will be bigger and some will be smaller....I'm fussy when it comes to correct sizes. I'm going to start making some templates for the blocks that don't have the foundation papers. I save the cards from magazines that are attached inside and some that actually fall out... measure the templates after printing them out to the chart given for rotary cutting to see if they are the correct size...This first block is going to be fun!!!

I still need to get my book, any good deals out there????

nhweaver 12-06-2011 06:14 AM

I think I agree with you. There were lots of "bugs" in the first farmer's wife.

The book has been out several months now and I haven't heard of any problems...I do frequent the other site where the author herself is heading the group there. The first FWS book did have some problems but nothing that would keep a person from doing the quilt. The FWS Pony Club book has everything included...no extras to buy like the first one. That was the hitch that kept alot from doing it...not just the few typos.

wendiq 12-06-2011 07:23 AM

Personally, I skipped "A Beauty". I found the Y seams hard and I am very comfortable with paper piecing. There are so many of those kind of blocks to do, that I figure if I need more for whatever I decide to make with these, I can always double up on one. This is FUN so why frustrate myself?....LOL!

Hacked computer

Hi guys, Sorry to tell you that my computer has been hacked and until further notice you will have to hold the fort down. My sister is writing this for me and not to worry her pc is safe. Please do not send me any emails or PM's. I'll get back to you as soon as I can. Honchey

PS. The ladies that have my phone number can call me if something comes up. I cannot contact anyone because all your phone numbers are in the PC. You can email me, Carolyn and give me your phone numbers and I will give them to Honchey. Please put down QUILTING as I will delete you if I do not see QUILTING on the email. Have a nice evening.....Carolyn

I also save the magazine insert cards, and I am going to start making templates as well. If you don't mind, can I ask another question? How do you color your line diagram? Do you outline the lines in a specific color and match the template, or do you color in the whole template?

JeanieG 12-07-2011 10:45 AM

I asked Laurie a question on the Yahoo site about re-using the templates I had made for the FWS Quilt. I thought maybe a conversion of some type. She said she thought about that also, but that these were too different. She mentioned that she just printed off the templates for each block on card stock and that she found that worked really well. I think I will do that too (I happen to have a ream of card stock fortunately).

janRN 12-07-2011 02:49 PM

A lot of medical offices are changing over to Electronic Medical Records so they are getting rid of their file folders. These are a great weight to make templates. I print the templates out then glue the whole page to a folder and then just cut out the templates. They hold up to rotary cutting if you're really careful but I just trace around them and cut them out with scissors. Can you tell I learned to quilt a loooooong time ago?
If you know anyone who works in a medical office, you could ask them to save their old file folders for you. They just cut the name off and throw them in a box for me; of course, it helps that I work there every once in awhile but I bet they'd save them for you if you asked. Just a thought.

gardnergal970 12-07-2011 03:29 PM

I just got the book today and the blocks look challenging but they will make a beautiful quilt. I have several things in the works but I'm going to try to keep up with the "herd of sewing ponies". Thanks for the opportunity.

Welcome gardnergal - we will all just keep "galloping" along! LOL

mirabelle 12-07-2011 08:06 PM

Yippee I finally received notification of new updates, I'm a happy little camper now. Off to sew the binding on a ufo and that's another one off my list.

ProLongarmARTQUILTER 12-08-2011 04:52 PM

Yep,I'm IN!!!

JeanieG 12-08-2011 07:27 PM

Well, I went back and made a list of those who are with us on the Pony Club Quilt. I came up with 17 who said they were going to join our group. How cool is that??? I did not count those just asking questions and such.

Termi 12-09-2011 08:20 AM

Pony Club Quilt

Hi, I'm new to this thread. I'm also a very newbie quilter and I'm hoping to learn a lot. This quilt might be too ambitious for me but I'm going to give it a whirl. The book sounds so charming. I've ordered it and it's on the way. Thanks for the idea about getting the book spiral bound. I didn't even know that could be done! Giddyup

dublb 12-10-2011 02:42 PM

Hey Ya'll I'm in! I just ordered this book. I'm sure that these are way over my head but that's the best way to learn! I've been reading all of the post about Y seams & I got to thinking that if I can miter my borders then maybe I can do Y seams. I guess I'll find out!

janRN 12-10-2011 02:55 PM

Welcome! This is going to be so much fun. It will be nice to "meet" so many new faces and to "talk" to old friends from FWS. Bev, if you can miter, you can Y seam. I've been practicing and finally something clicked and they all fit (well, with a little clipping, trimming, ironing LOL). Can't wait til we start.

JeanieG 12-10-2011 03:25 PM

Welcome Termi and dublb! So glad you joined our group!

QuiltE 12-11-2011 08:13 AM

<--- Gallops in …. to see what all you CowGals have been up to this week while I was away.
And me-thinks we need some
Christmas spirit here, so will do multi-colours for you!! along with a compendium of notes to one and all, so, please do read on, y'all!!
<o:p>
And now I've had all kinds of problems in posting my response ... will shut down, and re-boot and see if that sorts itself out.

So check in later, and I'll be back this way again soon.

Cherylsea 12-11-2011 08:28 AM

Hi! I just found this today. Ordered my book. Will start pulling fabrics later today. I was too late to start any of the Farmer's Wife groups and knew I would never do it on my own. This sounds charming. I think I subscribed to the thread but I'm not real sure how this new set-up works. I will try to keep up! After Christmas I hope to learn to add pictures - this will be an amazing learning experience!

QuiltE 12-11-2011 09:42 AM

Trotting back in here, to try again!

And now I see,
CherylSea has joined into this adventure! Welcome!

Now I'll try to continue with what I was trying to post before. hhhhhmmmmmmm??? Wonder were the cyber-gremlins sending me a message?

First of all
THANKS for missing me. When I am gone from the home-front, I go sans-computer! Talk about withdrawal!!! Though, I did have a quilty-fix and visited SheilaH's LQS. Unfortunately she was under the weather, and we weren't able to meet Talk about one lucky lady to have such a great LQS. Lots of colour, large florals, though no PC novelties! Maybe it's a good thing, that I don't live near that shop? Of course, I "had" to bring home a few souvenirs. If you'd like a wee peek, checkout the current issue of Quilt Sampler, as it's one of the featured shops.

I've missed our chats, so now am trying to dig out from the backlog IRL, decorate for Christmas, write cards, and last night decided I'd better get started on my gift for the exchange at my "adopted" family Christmas. Don't want to have to pull an all-nighter on Christmas Eve!! So now ... I'll try to catch up with this thread ...........

OKSewGlad ... Yeaaaaa!!!!!! I knew you wouldn't hold true to your word. Glad that we've drawn you into the Posse!! :)

VioletsFarm ... Great that you are in too. It gets lonely in the FWS threads at times, so please join OK, myself and a few others, in addying your FWS blocks. Besides the Pioneer FWS Ladies have been soo good with the oooohs and aaaaahs to we LateComers!!

To the Many FWSPC Newbies ... Welcome y'all!!!! It's so good to have you trotting along on the FWSPC with us. I'll look forward to getting to know you better along the trails and at the campfires!!

MiraBelle ... Your fabrics sound nicely American .... though that's YOUR country colours, too, right? :) Would you please post us a pic? As for those UFO/WIP/PhDs, if you do them, then you won't have any. That' just SO wrong!!! *giggles*

Speaking of Pictures!!!!!!!!! ... where are they my dear Cowgirls?? Pleeeeeeease do show us your FWSPC that you've set aside, ready and waiting!

JanieW ... Hope you are at less than a million now! There's very lucky L'il Cowboy/girl preemies who get to cuddle up in your tiny quilts! What size do you make them?

EarlyBird FWSPC'ers ... Good for you and your keen enthusiasm! I am SO tempted and itchy fingered to try a block. then I come back to reality and remember I WANT to complete my FWS blocks before PC starts. Would someone please take my PC CD from me? So far, I have not tempted fate by inserting it to see what it beholds, as I am sure then I will go beyond. NOW WAY, Jose! NOT until January 3rd!!! I can resist .......................... maybe??

Honchey
... I'm already missing you, and I haven't been here during your computer troubles. Hopefully, you can get things sorted out very quickly! I bet your DS is keeping you up to date though!

Carolyn, our pseudo-Honchey ... Welcome!! When you offered to be the go between via email, did you mean PMs? Have we recruited you to join the FWSPC? Sure would be nice to have you along!

DublB ... good spirit there!! I like the way you think Ys are not Ys, merely miniature mitred corners!! We CAN all do this, for sure!! And for those that hesitate on mitred corners, they'll soon be ready to do them without a 2nd thought!

JanRN ... SEE!!! I knew you could do it!! Though not fair for racing ahead, and shoing us up!!! :) Glad that you are feeling better about what is to come. As for me, as above, I'm in ignore mode at this time!!

And now,
MY CONFESSION ... While away, I took my PC book to read, and I started to panic at the complexity of the work to come. Then I settled myself down and said, no need to fret now .... lots of time for that in 2012, along with the others! And besides, if I don't try new and different things, how can I ever get better as a quilter? (as I offer huge praises for FWS and my discovering PPing wasn't so bad as I had convinced myself it was!)

And for
Those Who Have FEAR, doubt and worry about proceeding with the FWSPC ... please remember what FEAR really is .........
False
Evidence
Appearing
Real !!!!!!

So NOTHING to FEAR, right?
