The Farmer's Wife Pony Club Quilt
Hello and Welcome...We are about to embark on a journey that will take us through to a time where many of us can only imagine. Laurie Arron Hird has made it possible for us to experience these times...Children selling subscriptions...The prize?? A real life pony. Read the book...sew the blocks...the prize??? A quilt of your very own. Make a family heirloom. Follow us on a new journey to the old west...The Farmer's Wife Pony Club !
Below, a brief description of the book given with the author's permission. [TABLE="class: MsoNormalTable"] <tbody>[TR] [TD]The Farmer's Wife Pony Club Sampler Quilt--Letters From the Lucky Pony Winners of 1915 and 90 Blocks That Tell Their Stories, by Laurie Aaron Hird; release date: July 2011 In 1907 the Webb Publishing Company of St. Paul, Minnesota, created The Farmer's Wife Pony Club. Children were invited to join and compete for prizes by selling subscriptions to The Farmer's Wife magazine. The grand prize was a Shetland pony with a saddle, bridle, and often a carriage. To satisfy skeptics who doubted a child would, indeed, receive a pony, they asked the winners to send photographs of themselves with their ponies. Thankfully, many children also sent thank you letters along with their photographs. These endearing, poignant, and sometimes hilarious letters provide a unique window into the lives of children in rural America in the early 1900s. As a tribute to these Lucky Pony Winners, Laurie Aaron Hird has taken 90 traditional 8" blocks and designed a queen-size quilt in their memory. [/TD] [/TR] </tbody>[/TABLE] All levels of experience sewer/quilters are welcome. All advice and support given is appreciated and will be graciously received. There is no sign up required. Do these blocks at your own pace. There are no quilt police here. We will be doing 2 blocks a week in numerical order, 1 &2, 3 & 4, 5 & 6 and so on until all the blocks are done. Most Importantly you need to have the book. The book comes with a cd that contains paperpiecing patterns, rotary cutting instructions, templates for handpiecing. There will be two threads a week for this Quilt-Along. I will be posting the two threads on Tuesday evenings. Mark your calendars... Startup is Tuesday, January 3. 2012 We will be using this thread for all communication until we start Jan 3, 2012. To avoid any confusion please do not post any new threads. Use the above titled thread. The original FWS Quilt-Along is still active and will be an on-going thread on it's own. The FWS Pony Club will be referred to as The FWS PC. This is the place and time to ask any questions. If I'm not available for for any reason I'm sure there will be someone on the board qualified to answer. wow..really...I would wait at least a year to make sure all the bugs are ironed out of the book/patterns first! Believe me there will be issues..there always is!

I'm in too! I didn't encounter any problems yet with book or patterns but I made 20 blocks so far so still 70 to go.
If photo tuts are needed I'm willing to make them. Do I post them here in this thread? |

I'm one of the Latecomers, following in their success, and now have 74 blocks completed with 37 to go. So far, I haven't had any problems with the pattern info. It's actually gone much smoother, than many simpler patterns have gone. So yes, I may have to eat my words yet for the FWS ..... and perhaps bow to your predictions during the FWSPC ........ though I have no red flags popping up to make me cautious of starting the FWSPC in January with the group. Actually quite frankly, I am enthused and excited and even energized to be part of the group. This time I'm thrilled to be in from the start!! So please, kindly step aside and not rain on the parade ... or perhaps better said, please don't rain on the "trail ride"!!!! |

The ones that you have already shared with us, have done nothing but create more interest for me to be anxious to start in January. In fact, have helped spurn me on to complete the FWS before we saddle up and start down the new path of the FWSPC. Initially, I was hesitant as to whether I wanted to do the FWSPC, as what does a pony have to do with my life?? nor with children or grands of my own? Also, I was worried I'd just feel like I was doing the same old same old and might lose interest. Then, I got the book .... and I found my base fabric .... and started to build a unique stash just for the FWSPC .... and you shared your blocks with us. Then ................... OMG, my excitement, enthusiasm and energy for this project is abounding!!!!!!!! |

I too thought it was the same old something but it's not as you've seen. I still have a few projects that need finishing before I go on with the FWPCS but I hope to have the UFO's out of the way in two weeks! |
What? you mean we are supposed to finish up UFOs?
Silly woman!!!! :) Wherever would you get that idea? You'll have lots of time to work on them, as we sit around the campfires doing our blocks that you've already finished up!! I know I'll be looking forward to your helpful hints and wisdom from blazing the trail ahead of us!! :) P.S. .... Glad that it "made your day"!! |

Ok Everyone, This thread is for questions, answers, photos of fabric chosen for the project....members here curious about the project wanting to join..... This is not the thread for any blocks already done...Please don't misunderstand me....You have to remember that if the blocks start popping up..down the road they'll be asking which thread do I post my photos in?? We really need to keep it simple. No tutorials on the blocks. We will have our own instruction/discussion page starting JANUARY 3, 2012. Please forgive my scream. We are all excited about this new journey and there will be alot of questions and that's why this thread has started one month before the actual start of The FWSPC. Keep up your enthusiasm. Honchey |
I am one of those that couldn't wait and started two months ago with the Yahoo Group. It has helped me so much to see some of the photos that a few other's have posted, but not too many have. I am watching this thread and hope it will be a bit more active. This is a fun quilt being that each block has an accompanying "history" of a child and their pony. I'm am still not sure what I will do with my finished blocks, but I sure am enjoying doing each one up to now. I have kept to one a week, but think I can more. Have this site bookmarked....:) Thanks, Honchey

Got my book yesterday. I love it. I am going to cowboy up and quit whining about the first block and all those dang blasted Y seams. Probably not right away,tho.

After my journey with you all on the FWSQ, I am ready to saddle up the "pony" and ride the trail in good company again. Its making me feel a bit old; it has me looking for my first parade picture on my pony some 63 years ago. Wow!! how time can fly. Yes, I have other projects going, and finishing my FWQ slashing so I can get it basted on a long arm across the road from my house. Then I can hand quilt the blocks or sew it on my machine. What a wonderful idea I found on the QB that was an answer to the question I did not ask.
Yes, the FWQ had me going in circles and was a challenge; but with the help of QB members doing it at the same time, the journey was fun and I learned many new things. "Y" seams are a challenge, but who really wants the same old, same old thing that you already know? I am collecting fabric in a box, thinking about the whole plan, and love, love, love the Pony Quilt book. Love the stories, love how she had done her patterns and Yes, I would recommend it for the stories alone. The patterns are an extra bonus. And I am ready to hear about her next book... |

I was also a bit discouraged with block 1 but yesterday I found myself wanting to put my ufo's aside and work on something different so I dug out my fabric and made my first Pony Club block (just a test block reaaaaalllllly) and that first block went together like a dream. I was really impressed with how well it turned out. I used freezer paper templates and cut very carefully and within an hour it was finished. I also had my book spiral bound along with my Farmers Wife book and that has made it easier to study the blocks. Now back to those dang ufo's |

That sounds like a great idea. A new Staples has opened near my residence and I got a $20.00 coupon good this coming Monday only. I'll have to check it out to see if it's good on binding (might as well make this trek as easy as possible!). Thanks for the idea, since I don't really need any other "office" supplies. |

Hi Wendig, This group is a lively bunch...lots of interaction with each other... the other format is very different...Our block photos are posted with our comments...we don't have to go to another area to look at them. Many of the ladies here have become very close even if we are from different part of the world. Wow! We can consider ourselves an "international group" We really couldn't start earlier...many of us were still working on another project here... it would have been too confusing...for me anyway! Just like me, you will see that you'll find yourself here more than there down the road. I just happen to be partial to this site. Note: Laurie will be popping in every now and then to see how we are coming along after we are up and running in January, 1012. |

Well Honchey mentioned showing what fabrics we were going to use for the Pony Club Quilt. Sooooo I am going to do just that. I have been looking for fabric for this quilt since we decided to do it earlier in the year. This is what I have come up with thus far!

I've been "gathering" this past week...unfortunately only one piece of fabric from De, also picked up several of the Crayola blank coloring pads. I use this paper for the pping. You'll need 4 sheets for each block. Walmart sells the pads for $1.88 for 60 sheets. I cut it down to the printer paper size. I have 6 more blocks to finish for a boomerang swap, finish attaching binding for 2 jellyroll quilts (xmas gifts) and lastly cut some squares of cotton batting & fabric for microwave bowl holders? I fogot the proper term for them. I'm going to really try to bake some christmas cookies. I won a ribbon for them at the county fair one year and I haven't made them in a long time. The apples for the pie I was going to make for Thanksgiving are still on the dining room table waiting.... Anyone here going to bake for the holidays ? What kind of cookies do you make? I still have to check in here...no email notices for 2 days. |

I just thought Santa could talk to you to locate, and get me one of those clocks as an anti-aging tactic for myself!!! :) Looks like you have a long list of Christmas gifts to make/finish. Good for you. I have only one to make and am stumped on what to make! Baking .... 4 Christmas cakes already made (9x13 each) and one almost devoured already!! I start early with the making, so we can start eating it early!!!!!!! and then lets us eat it long into the winter too. New pan of squares tried, that will be tested today at muy first Christmas .... if the get a pass, I'll share the recipe. If not, I'll wish I hadn't told you!! Chocolate Cranberry Squares. I won't do a lot of cookies/squares though, more so on an as needed and if needed basis! Good idea to get the notice put over onto the Main Board .... I tend not to look on the BOW board and will have to remember to do so every Tuesday now!!! Do hope that you are "granted permission". |

JeanieG .... great selection of fabrics. With your gorgeous FWS quilts, I'm sure this is going to turn into another stunner. Here's my base fabric. I bought it in the summer on a super sale, thinking it'd be a backing for a cute kids quilt. I haven't had novelties/kids fabrics, and started to sweat it out when everyone started talking about the FWSPC til I remembered that I had this. It's going to be my base fabric. I've since found a piece of batik that is a match to the background in the print. My plan for now is that the print or batik will be in every block, with assorted other fabrics (some new and some from my stash) that coordinate. So it'll be a somewhat organized/controlled scrappy, I guess? |
I went thru the book..just the blocks ..last night. ...some of them are doozies. lots of inset seams ... I think I'm going to english hand piece the first one as it reminds me of the hexagon grandmas flower garden quilt. I will cut some freezer paper for the printer and use the pping pattern then cut it apart. A little more work and will add interest to doing it a different way. My fingers are getting itchy to start...I promised myself I wouldn't touch a thing for this until after Christmas!

I just posted a brief notice in the "Main" section of the Forum. I hope we get a few more for the "Posse". I hope it doesn't get bumped. The first FWS was posted in the Main then the threads were posted in the BOMW when it officially started. I hope they leave it.
I'm going to iron a few shirts...maybe that will keep my itchy fingers busy! |

Oh maybe (!!!?!!!) Gotta get the book, fabs, etc yet though. And I did say something at Thanksgiving to DD that I wasn't going to start anything new. She looked over at her DH and said did you get that on tape? LOL 8" blocks is a little less intimdating than the 6's or 4's of FWS or DJ--or maybe not. You guys are such fun to be with.:D

I think the timing is great starting the first of the year. I have my Pony Club book and putting together different fabrics I think will fit some of the blocks. Still working on the FWS, plan to finish it!

While the FWQ was being done, I watched, read and saved Honchey's wonderful cutting directions. I tried a few blocks, but my accuracy wasn't there - I am hoping I am now ready to make the Pony Club blocks since they are 8 inches instead of the 6 inch or heaven forbid the 4 inch Dear Jane blocks. I will order the book today and ponder what method, and anchor fabric I will use. I have quite a few novelty prints from an I Spy quilt I am working on, perhaps I will include some of those in this effort. I do look forward to learning from you wonderful, supportive quilters. See you in January.

ok I am using American Rose Banner, I have a fat quarter pack and it is beautiful reds, blues and beiges, I intend to add fabric from my stash if needed and I am using the same background fabric for some unity. As I don't have any grandchildren (and am constantly told "not getting any") I don't have any novelty prints in my stash. It will be interesting to see everyone's fabric choices. I am itching to start this project (and it is sitting in my sewing room staring at me) I have only made Block 1, just for a tester. Tomorrow I will finish another ufo, then only 2 to go, the rest are wip's so they don't count heheheh Welcome to any newcomers to this wonderful sew along, I am sure you are going to enjoy the pony ride. |
