Gardenergal, I just re-read my post re templates and it sounds so snooty-I apologise. I wasn't suggesting that you were doing something wrong. I was suggesting check your printer. I should read my replies before I hit send--so sorry. Can I blame DH? He was prowling around suggesting it was time for lunch and I was "suggesting" maybe he get his own LOL. So sorry!

No offense taken. Virtual communication does leave something to be desired at times since we can't pick up the body language which often is half the meaning! I'm used to working with plastic templates that don't shift or get in the way of my rotary cutter like paper does so I know that it's the template making that is my biggest problem! I have my printer set for 100% so everything starts out correct and my blocks come out size wise but some of the pieces have to be eased...I'm working on my pressing too.

Gardnergal, I'm not sure if you're aware that fabric sewn on the crosswise width will stretch more than on the straight side. When I find that one section is a little fuller than the piece it's being sewn to... I pin the intersections then I place that side on the bottom...the feed dogs will ease it in most times. ...use a little steam and by magic (most times) it all settles in place....

Yeah Honchey, back on the trail ride you are and posting cute blocks to boot. Nice basket fabric. It reminds me of the plaid design used by Thermos back in the day when I carried my lunch to country school! And the brown in the Betty block looks like dark brown worn leather.
Termi the stars so complement the dark blue fabric. Neat little flowers popping out of the the basket. If you had problems it doesn't show.

the brown fabric has a paintbrush effect with a little red and blue . it's very hard to see. very faint.

Thanks, Honchey. I'm working on that process. I don't always figure out which "leg" of the triangle should be on the straight grain.

oksewglad 02-02-2012 09:31 AM

Yes ggal, grain lines especially on the triangles would've been helpful. Basic premise is to place the st of grain on the side that is on the outside of the block. In the case of those paralleograms (sp?) in A Beauty use the longest sides for st of grain.
Someone in the FWS suggested using double sided tape between the template and your fabric b/4 you cut it out. I have used card stock to print the templates on too. It's more sturdy than paper and as for tape I took a strip and rolled it into a circle sticky side out to create my own 2 sided tape. It worked for me on A Beauty.

I've been printing mine on card stock and that gives a little better edge for the rotary cutter. I can place a ruler on the edge of the card stock and cut. However, I just usually mark around my templates and cut them out with scissors. Works great for me.

mirabelle 02-03-2012 02:24 AM

I measured my first few blocks and they all ended up at 8 inches so I'm a happy camper, must be my printer.... Everyones computer and printer are different so as long as the blocks all end up the same size it works for me

gardnergal970 02-03-2012 05:45 AM

Thanks all for the template tips. I will keep working on it. I've looked at next week and may try paper piecing.

QuiltE 02-04-2012 10:59 AM

I'm in Catch-up Mode ... Ladies and Gent!! ....

Template Discussion ... Interesting about the different sizes.
When printing ... be sure to check that you have "No Scaling" selected. I missed that a couple of times on my FWS. Luckily only made one block where I didn't catch it and then had to re-make.

Fabric Stretch Discussion ... One thing I've learned since joining the QB is the value of starching fabric, particularly when dealing with bias cuts or stretch potential. Before QB, I never used starch or sizing til the quilt was finished. Oh what a change it can make throughout the process! And bonus ... very little fraying when starched. I've started hoarding starch as it's getting very hard to find here in Canada ... and sizing is not sold any longer.

Honchey ... Perfect basket, straight as can be with those lines and with the handle matching right up. Flowers are so nicely blended with the background and the basket! And precision on all those seams for dear Betty!

OKSGlad ... good eye on the plaid Thermos! I always envied the others with the fancy thermos' and lunch pails. My Mom would never let us have them ... boring and plain were ours!

Termi ... Great fabrics for both blocks. I particularly like the freshness that shows with the basket fabrics.

WendiQ ... isn't that just one of the joys of being here on the Board? We can gather endless ideas!!

As each of the PC blocks are posted, and FWS before, I am so often surprised at the different looks each block takes.
How fortunate we are!

I agree QuiltE. We are fortunate! I love the QB, & I love this BOW!

I do agree with QuiltE and Dublb. I love to be here, learning and riding with you. So much to learn.
I am totally in love with this BOW. I love to see pictures of everyone's blocks.

I wonder if Laurie and Co know how much fun we have sharing recipes, stories, blocks and sewing tips! Apples and pork roast sound like a great pairing, QNS.

JeanieG 02-05-2012 06:42 PM

I read on the Yahoo Pony Club Blog that she is giving it up to someone else if they will take it. There really has not been hardly any traffic on there.

I've been wondering about TDT ... if she got moved and settled, and will come back to the campfire one of these times soon. Interesting that the yahoo group is up for grabs! I've never checked out their group ... enough happening here!!

I have a really good pork chop with apple slaw recipe that I'll post one of these times ...... remind me!

Another block done. The squirrels are back! Gathering nuts or flowers? My sis when she lived just inside DC's Beltway would cuss the squirrels as they had the audacity to come up to her front porch and eat the tops off her tulips blooming out front. So here's to the squirrels.

I purposely placed the flowers off because when I first saw the block I thought they looked like hearts.

JeanieG 02-11-2012 10:46 AM

Oh just love those squirrels oksewglad! Very pretty block!

dublb 02-11-2012 11:33 AM

Your catchin' up!! Your hearts & squirrels are perfect!

janRN 02-11-2012 02:45 PM

Very pretty block, OK. I hate to admit this but I'm afraid of squirrels. They are so bold here that they come up on my deck and "chatter" at my dog. Do squirrels bite? OMG I am such a city girl LOL.

oksewglad 02-11-2012 03:01 PM

No they pretty much mind their own business. Our dogs chase them away so squirrels are way out in the woods around my place. Oh and thanks.

dublb 02-11-2012 03:04 PM

Squirrels can be cute & they can be a big pain! I like watchin' 'em play, but they chew on everything. My cable wire has been replaced several times 'cause of squirrels chewing through 'em. I've seen 'em take a bite of green apricots & then throw said fruit down 'cause it wasn't ripe yet. A whole crop layin' on the ground with little bites out of each one! My apricot trees are dead now so they go after my pecans! :( It is kinda funny ta hear 'em fussing at the cats or dogs. My animals just look at 'em like "are ya talking ta me?" :D

Blue Bell 02-11-2012 04:13 PM

oksewglad,
Love your fabrics for your block. Glad that you joined the group. I knew you would.

QuiltE 02-11-2012 10:08 PM

JeanieG ... I'll try to remember to post it tomorrow on the Discussion thread! Remind me, please?

OKSGlad ... Like you, I saw those flowers, more as ♥s ... and yet I didn't see the Broken ♥s!! Your background fabric with the squirrels is a perfect fit ... and the colour contrasts really lets the basket pop out on top.

My squirrel stories ... at the farm, like OKSGlad they weren't really a problem as the dog helped keep them at bay! They were quite entertaining in the fall, when the walnuts were on the tree, and leaves off. You could watch them go up and down the branches and push the nuts to the ground. And once they had them all cleared, you'd see them go back up and down for a final check that all were dislodged. There'd be massive heaps of the nuts made ... which would get covered with snow in the winter. And yet by spring there was not sign of the nuts! so I guess they burrowed in the snow and ate them.

Then I moved here ... on the edge of the bush (house, deck and then the bush). I thought I'd feed the birds ... and discovered the squirrels could easily jump from the trees to the feeders and clear the feed out! The bird stores kept saying, oh just put your feeders away from there ... well, can't happen! Did get a squirrel proof feeder. Though not all birds can use it! In the end the squirrels got fatter and fatter ... and bolder and bolder. And oh then, there were the raccoons that came in and ate from the feeders! .... could reach from the railing up to the feeders.

Every once in awhile, I feed the birds for awhile ... and then when I've had enough of the squirrels ... then sorry, birds, fend for yourselves.

Now if you want some real entertainment ... get your squirrels a Squngee ... check it out here
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQ9cdQ-GMwk

I've seen a bunch of squirrels literally line up on my deck for this thing. I have all types ... but the grey ones were always better at the acrobatics, than the blacks or reds! :)

dublb 02-11-2012 11:13 PM

That squirrel video is so funny! :D:D

You really should get yourself a Squngee, DublB ... when I was given it, I thought oh yea, what a waste of $. Then when I installed it, it was terrific entertainment!! Luckily for me, the corn cobs were free from the neighbour's field after the combine went thru!

oksewglad 02-12-2012 07:05 AM

I'm sewglad I put squirrels in my block--what a Hilarious tangent this took us on! Thanks QE:D

Now you know what to do with corncobs in the field .... I couldn't believe what they were charging for them in the Bird Store. City people will pay anything!!

That or get the GKs out there, picking them up and taking them to Farmer's markets in the fall and make some $ for college!! Had lots of down corn this year and are feeding the deer very well this winter.

QuiltE 02-12-2012 07:22 AM

For sure... DGKs selling!!!!
Roadside stand?
One of the farmers near here put stalks of corn at the end of the lane, self-serve this year for $1 a stalk 6 for $5...... and made over $500! Decided it was the best "cash crop" he'd ever had.

It started out more as a joke after hearing what price they were at a local store. Then there's the price of decorative straw bales in the fall!!! :)

I used to sell sweet corn when I was a kid ... seemed like big $ to me! Loved the $ but hated picking it, as the stalks as it seemed the stalks were always wet as we had to get it early enough in the day, to have it out at my roadside stand.

Better late than never. Here is my Betty's Delight. I didn't make the other block because I know it would bug me to have the basket on it's side.

I love the squirrel video, I think I'll fill my bird feeders so I can watch the squirrels :)

QuiltE 02-15-2012 07:24 PM

FryGuyMoore ... Great contrasts in your Betty's Delight! neat rope fabric ... and the black crackle!
I got mine done the other night but still haven't done the Basket. Maybe I'm thinking like you, and don't like the tilt?

Save filling the bird feeders for the squirrels ... and just get them a Squngee.
Much More Entertainng!!!!!!! (for them and YOU!)
(though they did bother the bird feeders less, once they the Squngee)
