The FWS Pony Club week 19 Good Cheer & Girl's Favorite Discussion Page

Hi all you cowpokes or should I say ponypokes ???? 56 & 37 = number of pieces...in that order for the blocks this week....too much for my brain to contemplate right now...although I have been glancing at the scrap pile for color combinations...This week all I have to offer is the....

Letter of the Week #11--Dorothy F. Biebighauser

Dorothy F. Biebighauser was born on September 26, 1901, in Washington County,
Minnesota. Her parents were named George (b. 1874) and Adaline (b. 1875.) Some
of the family's census records were poorly written. Her sibling, two years
younger, was named Corrine (a girl) in the 1910 census, or Corwin (a boy) in the
1920 census. Her letter and photograph on page 27 clears up the mystery. Her
sibling was a boy, most likely named Corwin. Dorothy also had a baby sister,
Florence, (not pictured)who was one year old when "Freckles" the pony joined the
family. Dorothy died on December 6, 1987, just a few miles from where she was
born. Her last name did not change, so it is quite likely that she ever married.

The turkeys and ducks are growing: and the new "chicks" are here:But I still have a little quilting time in the sewing room. Finished this week's blocks and next week's blocks as well. And sewed an another row on my FWQ...so three rows left to sew. QuiltE, your packet left left today, so watch for it.

JeanieG 05-15-2012 06:58 PM

Oh my the turkeys and ducks have really been growing! Love the baby chicks!

QuiltE 05-15-2012 07:17 PM

Honchey ... sending some more {{{{{HUGS}}}}} to you. Glad to see that your scrap pile is calling you ... that's a good sign!

QNSue ... Are you a Proud Mama? or what? awwwwwww they're so cute! Really like that black one with the white tuxedo shirt!! :) Are the chicks for meat? or will they be layers? Will keep an eye open for the snails to arrive ... or perhaps I should say the Pony Express? :D You're coming closer to the finish!! Keep at it ..... in your not-so-spare time! :)

Now for the announcement ........................ My FWS is done!!!!!! I was on a conference call today, which was mostly listening, so I brought my quilt, thread, etc into the office and got to work while I "worked"!!! So that got me in the mood, and I just kept at it tonight and a few minutes ago, the last stitch was sewn. Will do a good pick and clean session now ... removing loose threads, etc.

So needless to say ... no PC blocks done ... and not sure i"ll get at them. The LQS UFO Challenge is coming near the end, so I want to get as many done as I can for that.

oksewglad 05-15-2012 09:12 PM

Wow the birds are growing fast. And yeah..................QE has it finished too. You and mirabelle made it!!! Can't wait to see.
Meanwhile, I got home and tons of stuff to do. DH doesn't do dishes--let alone during corn planting season. Got half the lawn mowed tonight, too. Tomorrow go pick up more seed corn and back to the garden. No blocks here either.

mirabelle 05-16-2012 02:37 AM

oksewglad you will get back to your sewing room soon I'm sure,
QuiltE can't wait to see a pic of your FWS, come on we're all waiting:o

wendiq 05-16-2012 06:28 AM

QNS. I think if I were ever to visit you that I would Never leave.....LOL! I love the look of your place with it's animals and flowers. What a lucky lady you are to have so much room and "country". I'm the city dweller (well, the burbs)and it's not great....the soil is so hard that it's hard to grow things and even if we put good soil around the plant, the hardpan below eventually gets it.....Oh well, at least we have our own place. I'm glad it's not an apartment. When I did live in one, I had pots and barrels all over the place.....I've got a few here......but it's not the country by any stretch of the imagination. Animals, I think not.....maybe a cat or dog, but my DH and I have reached the age that we won't have any more of those as our kids don't want them if something should happen to us......so believe me, I vicariously live through all your delightful comments and pictures.......I think you do treasure what you have.....:)

QuiltingNinaSue 05-16-2012 07:09 AM

To all PC trail riders; the welcome mat is always out. And we do have a guest room that sleeps 3 and a travel trailer that never travels that will sleep another four (But you will have to help unload stuff stored in it). Free lodging for a week with meals included. Reasonably close to Thunderhead Lake (Mo) and Rathburn Lake in Iowa.

janRN 05-16-2012 08:23 AM

Anne, thanks again for keeping us on the trail and posting all the background info. Keep hanging around with us--looking at these beautiful blocks is a great way to help maintain sanity. I swear I'm spending too much time at the nursing home/rehab center with my mother. All these people talk about is pooping!!! I'm sorry but if that is ever the highlight of my life, please shoot me!!(Just kidding)
QNS, wow have your critters grown!! They look so soft and fluffy I want to pet them. And I'm so jealous of your flowers; I can't even grow a cactus in a pot without killing it!! Hmmm, guest room lodging--sounding good!

carriem 05-16-2012 07:30 PM

I haven't been able to sew for about 3 weeks now, but today I did get to go out to "the clubhouse" (my finished 12x12 craft shed with heat and a/c) and was able to get it all cleaned up and even cut out fabrics for at least 6 blocks. I have a sewing day planned next Monday so am all ready to just sew!

Need to get to bed now...I will give a "market" update when I return Sunday (well it might be Monday depending on how late we get home).

Isn't it frustratin' when life gits in the way of our passion?:)

QuiltE 05-16-2012 07:57 PM

OKSGlad ... you just tell your DH that I'm proud of him for letting you disappear from the farm. And even more so that he let you take off during this busy season. Good Man he is ... make him his favourite food!

MiraB ... Thanks! My challenge is the how to get a picture that you ladies can see and enjoy instead of just a heap on the couch! :) I really am starting to think of hanging it off the eavestrough for the photo op. I have a friend coming tomorrow and if the weather cooperates and they're in the right "mood" we might try that!!

QNSue ... every picture you share, it just tells us that you must be living in paradise! :)

WendiQ ... Sometimes we just have to look for ways to enjoy what we want, yet in a different than normal way! Maybe time for some more container gardening, as it's not just for apartment dwellers!

JanRN ... {{{HUGS}}} to you! I'm sure it's not easy "hanging out". I'm sure your Mom appreciates your loving care. How's she doing? And how are YOU doing? :)

CarrieM ... OMG you have a separate building for your sewing. WOW!!! Enjoy Quilt Market and we'll be all looking forward to hearing all about it!

mirabelle 05-16-2012 08:23 PM

QNSue what a beautiful setting, if I close my eyes I can picture all of the PCer's sitting beside your rose trellis oohing and aahing as we share our blocks for the week.
I'll bring the coffee machine and make cappuccinos for everyone, whose up for a decadent chocolate cake????

My DH keeps buying me rose bushes everytime we move house and I keep killing them:eek:

QuiltingNinaSue 05-17-2012 03:55 AM

Thanks everyone for your kind words; yes, I can see us gathered by the Wisteria vines and the Night Owl Rose bush and climbing clematis vines listening to Carriem report on marketing. And ahhhhing and oohing over her club house pictures

Here comes those pesky birds again...the turkeys found another hole in the fence and came to say 'hello'. They followed by dh up and down the fence until they found another hole and up to keep him company. Twice yesterday. and refused to go to roost last night until he found them in the tall grass...then followed him back to their building and roosts. Spoiled pets, no, we do not spoil our fowl.

Honchey, it does not matter on the count of the pieces of each block, 'cause they go together one at a time. Just like any other block...one piece at a time, one block at a time, until its suddenly a quilt. Course, some think we are crazy to cut fabric up into pieces, then sew it back together in a pattern. But in our virtual RV, we can see the patterns in our minds, visually, and go for it. We are the winners, the prize is our beautiful quilts which we treasure. Now to finish the slashing on my FWQ today....almost there.

gardnergal970 05-17-2012 05:01 AM

QNSue...I've wanted to grow a wisteria for years but have never had a proper support for it. Such a beautiful vine! Just don't name your turkeys or it will be much harder to enjoy them for dinner!

Carriem...you've been one busy gal! How about a picture of your club house? Enjoy the market and don't get overwhelmed by all the goodies. Find a favorite for us to look for.

Mirabelle...ummmm....cappuccino....

JanRN...hang in there. This too will pass...but do take good care of yourself.

MiraB ... do you suppose you could whip me up a Latte? along with those caps?

QNSue ... you know that if you want to get those birds in line, remind them that if they're not good little birdies, they'll meet their destiny much sooner! That should get them to behave!! :D

While my yard is no where as glorious as QNSue's beautiful spot, here's some pics that I took today, after I did my FWS photos. First of all, my back verandah, next to the lane ... still decorated for Easter! The reason .... I had the wreath for Christmas decorations, then after, I changed the trimmings to more of a winter look. Then Easter and full Bunny decor! The mini lights are on an auto-timer and have been there all along. Because it's sheltered the boughs stay in good condition throughout. To the right you can see the deck where my FWS was hanging, and then from there to the right it goes into the bush. More to the story ...... read on .........

Last year Mrs. Robin came along and built a nest along with the Easter decorations. Guess What? she came back and did the same this year and even in the same place .... look to the upper left of the wreath!!! During the construction phase, I'd come out and the flowers would be picked off and tossed on the floor. Guess she didn't want that decor for her home!

Four eggs, have now hatched, and those poor birds are piled in there. Talk about a crowded house!!!!!
You can really only see one and a lot of fluff of the feathers. I can't get over how large it's eye and beak is already .......

Trilliums are our provincial flower, so are protected. Illegal to pick, though OK to transplant. When I came to this place, there were no trilliums in my bush, so I moved some in and they seem to have settled just fine! I can see these from all along the back of my home. Nothing nicer to wake up in the morning, than to look out and see them from my bedroom. Red flags are my markers so I can keep an eye that they re-grow each year and so I don't in error start digging to plant something else!

Just a little closer look .......

Here I am in the bush, looking back up the slope towards my home, so a reverse of what I can see from above .........

Another shot in the same area, just a little closer up. As you can see throughout, masses of periwinkle and forget-me-nots are showing their pretty-ness right now and the ferns have stretched out for a nice feathery backdrop. Lots of wild tiger lilies to look forward to, some White Nancy, and some other perennials groundcovers (that I don't know the names!) have been added to entry to the bush.

OBTW ... I have a window and patio door in my sewing room, that looks out into this yard view!!! Thanks for looking and I hope I've given you a little idea of what the back area of my home is like. The front gardens .... will wait til the lilies and clematis give some colour!

dublb 05-17-2012 07:26 PM

QNS & QuilltE - Thanks for the lovely picts of your flowers. I could show picts of mine from last year & the year before, but this year things are a bit bleak. :( I'll live vicariously thru ya'll.

JeanieG 05-17-2012 08:16 PM

What a marvelous yard QuiltE. Love all the "natural" terrain. Thanks for sharing!

mirabelle 05-17-2012 10:31 PM

What a beautiful garden you have QuiltE, so peaceful

QuiltingNinaSue 05-18-2012 03:55 AM

Love your curb appeal and the 'robin' taking up residence, a good welcome to all. Love your 'hilly' terrain that grows ferns & wild assortment of plants and side deck. Beautiful greenery, that makes your FWQ fit right into the scene...with its green also. What a nice place to meet to quilt!! Lovely pictures.

Thank you for sharing. Virtual visiting with photos are fun...almost as good as being there. Have fun sewing this weekend. I am going to try and finish my FWQ...you all have inspired me to try. Thanks.

gardnergal970 05-18-2012 04:41 AM

QuiltE....thanks for the pictures. How you must enjoy the having such a beautiful setting to live in.

oksewglad 05-18-2012 10:52 AM

Oh what fun to look at the "House and Garden" settings the Two Q's (E&NS) have. How do you get that vinca vine growing so nicely. I am so jealous. I'm still trying to get landscaping around the house after building 5 years ago--everything's on a slope and mowing it is not an option. Never enough time. Corn's in the ground except where poor hay field is getting plowed up. Lots of hay down--some to be chopped, other to be big round baled and put into baleage bales. It never ends.
GS's 4-H dog agility class last night proved to be successful. Think Bandit is heavier than GS so obedience/control has been challenging. He's now working with his heifer to get her show ready. School's out next week so kids will be around the farm often. Somedays am so glad of their home is "half mile and a hill away"! Then the next day I turn around and look for them.:o

QuiltE 05-18-2012 05:13 PM

Glad that everyone enjoyed the little walk around my back yard! Further down that hill you come to a narrow flatland, with two small man-built ponds in a creek that flows thru my property. And onwards to limestone rock outcroppings, and overhangs ... yes, you can stand under those overhangs. And if you're ambitious you can climb up the rock to the rest of my property which ends, looking down at a river. Angling across the back is my property boundary, which has a busy rail line .... trains can go thru to Chicago along these tracks! Also, the commuter trains in the opposite direction to Toronto.

And yes, this back part of my property is pretty much what attracted me to it, when I purchased it, 9 yrs ago. The front has the typical open lawn, with trees between me and the neighbours, on both sides. And more trees screening the property from the road. So for drive-bys to look in, they pretty much have to stop at the laneway to get a view! Lilacs are all along the lane, and I noticed today that the first blooms are there ... hard to find yet, so I will wait a few days, then start filling the house with them and their aroma! :)

OKSGlad ... the periwinkle or vinca was here when I arrived. The former owner had planted it and it has just gone wild. Honestly, I don't think you have to do anything with it ... just plant it and it takes off. I will say that I was thinking it's the prettiest it's ever been this year ... and I think it has gotten a lot thicker and spread immensely these last years. I love how the forget-me-nots pop up amidst it .... and other things too! And then, later on, the weeds do too! .... now that's not so nice.

What a great 4-H Club, dog agility!! Granted, I'm sure there's a lot of farm dogs that are not impressed with what their young masters are putting them thru now!!! :D Crops are really going along for you folks! Last of the beans are going in, in this area and the ground is like powder. WOW! Your school kids get out early .... elementary go right thru til the end of June here. Secondary get out mid June'ish, depends on their semester structure, and when the individual student's exam schedule is over. Then both start back the day after Labour Day. So with kids off ... you'll have more help soon! (right!!!!!)

oksewglad 05-18-2012 07:15 PM

You could be in my part of the country, QE! Although not in my immediate backyard, just down the road a piece I could find an identical spot! Have wanted to grow the periwinkle for a long time. Our lilacs bloomed earlier; irises are now blooming as well as bleeding hearts. Check out this--did any of you do this with Bleeding hearts? My little GD's loved it!

Oh that's neat! I remember pulling the bleeding hears apart, but don't remember any stories like that! So when you drive down the road, be sure to wave to me! Saw a couple of irises blooming yesterday and the bleeding hearts. We usually see them at the same time as the lilacs. I'm just so looking forward to fresh flowers in the house from here on ... for now, it's just a few pansies snipped off the planter I have on the doorstep.

And the welcome at the East Door Lost count of the number of flowers on the vine. One of three groups of clematis on our homestead.

Troubles this morning: the ducks keep raiding the turkey feed and water so we may have to fence the ducks in a pen for a couple of weeks.

oksewglad 05-19-2012 07:32 AM

Spectacular QNS! Just bought a trellis for my young clematis. DH needs to attach to house foundation and then let them grow. Naughty ducks!

QuiltE 05-19-2012 07:52 AM

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh
Oh so beeeeeeeeeeaaaaauuuuuuutifulllllllll
QNSue!

QuiltingNinaSue 05-19-2012 09:52 AM

The trellis on the East Door is a beef panel over landscape timbers, and it is starting to lean off to one side from the weight of the clematis plants. Two plants on each side of the door...one side is red, the other blue. I thought it was "bull" strong when my dh built it. Guess we own the leaning tower of clematis...may have to make a clematis quilt!!

I am down to the last row in the middle of my Farmer's Wife Quilt Sampler, of getting all sewn together. Cleaned kitchen this morning, did laundry, checked on all the fowl, feed the eight cats, went into town for dog food, fixed lunch and baked brownies. Hope to get time in the quilt room Have to reset some sweet potato plants...dh trellised 26 tomatoes in the garden this morning, dh thinks there are fresh strawberries to pick and the rhubarb needs to be pulled and frozen.

QuiltE 05-19-2012 10:33 AM

Yours is not only a paradise, but with fields of plenty!

It wears me out just reading all your posts about what you have accomplished this morning QNS! You have an enormous amount of energy!

dublb 05-19-2012 01:25 PM

Here's what I've been doin'!
http://www.quiltingboard.com/main-f1...ml#post5228337

QuiltingNinaSue 05-19-2012 06:13 PM

Tiling now, that is hard work; we have done some tile at one time; cute how you used your quilt tool for the tile. I slept out and played today compared with that job. But, oh, the benefits of a new floor, and a new 'clean' look brightens up the whole house.

oksewglad 05-19-2012 07:24 PM

The trellis on the East Door is a beef panel over landscape timbers,

I use "cattle" and "hog" panels in my garden. We have cut some in half so they are 8'--work perfect for pea and tomato fences in my 8 x 4 raised beds. Mine are left overs from calf duty. I've also put one (hog panel) vertically on the end of the bed. This year it's growing pole beans. DDIL's new calf barn have eliminated the need for them--so let's reuse! :) We have a lot of clay ground around the house and the raised beds are so much better than beating the hard clay soils--gets like cement when dry in the summer.

gardnergal970 05-20-2012 04:54 AM

Oksewglad & QNSue...those panels are the best for many applications. My son in TX had me help him design and build a 4 tier, 8 foot long grow bed for starting seedlings when he was just starting his garden market farm. Those panels worked perfect. I'm not on the farm now and have had to resort to regular rolled wire which works but the panels don't take so many supports. OKSG...I started gardening in that kind of soil but that was before much was being said about raised beds. I'm gardening in sand now which is totally different but I do have raised beds so I can add as much humans as possible to where I plant. Mulch is a must.

Dubib...you are very resourceful. Hope you can enjoy the fruits of your labors soon.

QuiltE 05-20-2012 05:13 AM

Clay ... I know all about it ... UGH! .... Raised in heavy clay country and our first farm was just that, though it did have some lighter fields. Oh joy, oh bliss. All my flowerbeds were always heavy clay, and as for getting any compost/manure to help lighten it up, forget it .... farmer husband was non-cooperative and non-interested.

When we bought our farm in '88, we thought we were in heaven ... loam! It was beautiful in the fields, garden, flower beds. I remember the former owner saying to us ... you don't have to know how to farm in this land, you just throw the seeds in and it grows!!!! He was a good farmer, though he was totally correct on the not needing to know how ... for clay, OMG you could sure mess things up if you did it wrong ... and lots did, due to being impatient! :)

Wet spring weather in clay country meant 10 lbs of mud on your boots.
Wet spring weather in this beautiful loam, hardly a trace!

So I always sympathize with those with clay .... though in a dry year, you have the advantage that the soil retains the moisture better for the plants, and the crops can generally fair better than in the lighter soils.

QuiltE 05-20-2012 06:32 AM

It's me again .... dropping by with a treat for you, to enjoy with your morning cuppa ...... :D
