Oh, that's a beauty! It really makes a difference to look at the blocks with the unifying sashing & cornerstones, doesn't it?

JAGSD 11-18-2010 12:17 PM

Beautiful!

Yes, it really does. Now to get caught up. I think I'm only 6 blocks behind but should have more time soon to work on them.

Connie, Great job! You must be so proud  Isn't it amazing how the same blocks can look so different. I'm only 4 blocks behind. I had to put it all away. I did pick out the fabrics but they have to wait.

janRN 11-18-2010 04:50 PM

Connie I love your blocks laid out like that. This is so exciting. I love seeing everyone's blocks. Great job.

Everyone was so helpful on deciding what fabric to use on the sashing strips that I want to ask for your opinion on the cornerstone blocks. Below are the three options: red, green and black (almost navy). Please let me know what you think looks the best. Thanks so much!

mirabelle 11-23-2010 06:50 PM

there is so much red and green in your blocks that I would go with the navy as a contrast or even audition a yellow/gold

sew cornie 11-23-2010 06:59 PM

I vote for the red. I love the energy it adds.

Quilting Nonnie 11-23-2010 07:32 PM

I vote red also. But would like to see gold.

pookie ookie 11-23-2010 10:30 PM

I like red and navy. Maybe the navy just a tad more. Cool pix!

Dagny 11-24-2010 01:49 AM

First choice - Navy. Second choice - Red. This was such a good fabric choice for the FWS quilt.

JAGSD 11-24-2010 05:46 AM

I vote for the red too, it makes the blocks come alive. The navy is a close 2nd, but I don't care for the green it tends to blend in to me.

I love them!! They look so pretty-I love all the colors. You seem to have this "scrappy" method figured out. Your blocks look great-good job!

My vote goes to the navy. Both red and green are very prominent in your blocks, so the navy is a refreshing change. Belles

Shamrock, you're blocks are lovely! You have done a great job getting all of them to flow together. Congrats!

Whew hew! I'm finally to 25.
Here are my first 25 of the 3" blocks. Would love to have all opinions. Do I need more of any color? I am trying to do this in 30's prints and I would love to have all ideas on what to use for sashing. I would like to stick with 30's colors but am really thinking a solid would be best. Any ideas? I will have to see if anybody in town carries any solid 30's.
Thanks in advance for all your help and ideas, it's really appreciated.(Actually there are 26 blocks here one I haven't decided which one I will keep and the other use for something else)
Judy

JeanieG 11-26-2010 10:14 AM

You are amazing JAGSD! I cannot fathom trying to do all those little pieces in a 3" block. All I can say is WOW!

Quilting Nonnie 11-26-2010 10:28 AM

I think your 30's blocks look great. They do make solids in thirties colors. You might check online and just search for thirties fabrics and they should have the solids in with that collection.

Good job!

As JeanieG said - "You are amazing!" I'm not a fan of 30's fabrics, but your choices flow beautifully. With all the different patterns, I too think you will almost have to go with a solid or something that reads solid from a distance (to quote Eleanor Burns). One thing I did notice, in the top row, fifth block from the left, the Batwing's black or navy seems to jump out from the other blocks. Perhaps if you used more of this color, it wouldn't be so prominent. Just a thought. Belles

JAGSD 11-26-2010 10:38 AM

Thank you Belles,

Boy it does stand out. Now why didn't I catch that? I'm thinkin it is way too bold for the rest of the colors. I may try a different one I am really not sure if the black is a true #30's print or is it?
Thank you

Thank you JeanieG, believe me, their has been a couple of them I really wondered about! Their backs look like major seam roads...he hee I am doing them Paper piecing so they are fairly easy for me to do They will be interesting when quilting the final quilt.

JAGSD 11-26-2010 10:42 AM

Quilting Nonnie,
Thank you, I will go do a search and see what I can find, I could really use some more prints too.
Thanks, Judy

Jagsd

Black was used in the 30's. There were lots of blacks with yellow, red or other colored objects.

Here's a good source for some 30's fabrics. They are about 3.95 a yard and from main manufacturers.

Here's some more for $6.50 a yard

Jagsd: love your blocks--I can't believe how nice they look in those prints. I agree that Batwing seems to jump out and would try to use that color elsewhere. This has helped me so much to see them all together and get feedback from everyone ( I also have one that jumps out and didn't realize it). I can't wait to see the next 25.

sew cornie 11-26-2010 03:33 PM

Jagsd, your blocks are amazing! I can't imagine doing these in 3" and greatly admire your perseverance. They're beautiful. My only thought on the black Batwing is that if you remove it, the one next to it with red may pop out from all the rest. But considering that there are still so many blocks to go, I'm sure the colors will balance out in the end. No worries. ;)

You may want to check Connecting Threads for solids. I believe they have some to coordinate with their Canning Day '30s line and it's hard to beat their prices - $3.96/yd. for solids I believe.

Blue Bell 11-26-2010 04:41 PM

Everyone's blocks are awesome. Everyone is making such beautiful blocks. So, it looks like I will be joining all of you for I just ordered the FWS book from Keepsake quilting.

JAGSD 11-26-2010 09:02 PM

Pookiw Ookiee & Quilting Nonnie: Thank you for the links, I found some solids and ordered a few more prints. I really was not sure of the colors when I started this. I think I will try to use the fabric in the Bat Wing a couple more times thru out my quilt and see what happens.
janRN: Thank you, I think for now I will leave the Bat wing and use the colors in it a couple more times and then see how it looks, it's amazing how taking a picture and really seeing wht you have looks like.
When I get my solids I will see which one works best for the sashing.
Thanks again All! I really appreciate it.
Judy

These are beautiful. I love the colors

pookie ookie 11-27-2010 11:13 PM

Jagsd, I'm also doing 30's and have some dark blue and black background prints. They'll stick out for a while. No worries in the end. I used a dark fabric on my batwing, too. It must be asking for it.
