Yep, he knows where that is. Thanks PokerDiva for letting us know. I have never been to Klamath Falls, but DH says that area is beautiful. I'm familiar with the Newberg to Kizer/Salem area. Love to go to Portland's Powell Bookstore. Lots of good memories from that area. Hopefully, you are done with the snow. YIKES!

What time is she posting the clue.

If you go to the top of the page where it says, "Thread Tools," click on that and then click on "subscribe to thread." New postings will turn up in your mailbox. Or you can go to the white rectangle near the top with the magnifiying glass beside it and type in "New mystery train." I think someone said the more "hits" the NEW mystery train gets will keep it near the top. But I could be wrong. :D :D That's been know to happen! No clue about the time.

Everose 05-26-2012 04:46 AM

Good Morning!!! Yes, I'm ready. I did major cleaning yesterday. Even vacc. window sills before I washed the windows. Someone must have lost a battery somewhere and I picked it up.

The weather here is cool but not raining yet. But am watching not one but 2 rabbits in my back yard. DH thinks they are cute, but I want them gone. Know they are waiting for my garden to come up and then they will have a hay day. Such is life.

I made the rhubarb bar cookies yesterday. Yes they are great. Half the pan is gone - but I shared with the neighbors. Haven't made the rhubarb lemonade yet, this morning!!!!

Best get breakfast before out clue is posted because then it's my time.

PokerDiva 05-26-2012 05:07 AM

With the housing market the way it is I don't think there is probably any thing to worry about for awhile. Yes, suppose to be warmer today with thunder showers. Crazy.

PokerDiva 05-26-2012 05:11 AM

Judy is very sick so she may be late this morning. Everyone just have a extra cup of coffee. I am sure she will show up.

KarenR 05-26-2012 05:12 AM

What time does it start?

SunlitenSmiles 05-26-2012 05:24 AM

probably about another hour and 15 minutes......I think it is all set to post automatically at about 8 a.m. in Judy's time zone........cannot remember if we are one hour different, dang daylight savings time messes me up.

You could move to Newport. Very nice quilt shop there! Two kits from there are waiting for me...but it's a train that is more interesting right now!

PokerDiva 05-26-2012 05:38 AM

Judy is now on Pacific time. They don't change for daylight savings.

Was hoping to get this before I leave for the hospital. My little 5 month old grandson is in there. Kept vomiting. Think it is just a virus. Hope so. Going to see him and give mommy a break. Maybe he can come home today.

Cindy60545 05-26-2012 06:24 AM

my studio is calling! I need to wind a bobbin for Queenie to finish the quilt on her, then on to the train! Just waiting anxiously for our clue!

PokerDiva 05-26-2012 06:32 AM

Hoping your GS is OK. Such a little thing to be so sick.

Just to be sure I don't get accused of lurking, I am new to the board. Someone mentioned the chatroom so I have been poking around a bit and saw the post for a mystery quilt. Someone said 8 AM Pacific time so that would be 11 AM East coast and 10 AM central time for me. Hope to hear more.

KarenR 05-26-2012 06:44 AM

I was on the chat but left - maybe I'll go back and wait.

SunlitenSmiles 05-26-2012 06:49 AM

welcome Chef we are waiting for a clue for a mystery quilt...if you want to check the fabric list it is the very first post on this thread.....welcome aboard !!

KarenR 05-26-2012 06:50 AM

How many of us are waiting like it is Black Friday.

KarenR 05-26-2012 06:51 AM

I think someone should turn the clock ahead. lol

KarenR 05-26-2012 06:52 AM

But I love the excitement!!!! Better than Black Friday because I know I will get the clue.

pmrosie 05-26-2012 06:54 AM

I am going to give this a go. I wish it would be time already! I have never done anything like this, so let's see what happens!

paintmejudy 05-26-2012 07:04 AM

Step # 2 of the Mystery Quilt

5 Attachment(s)
<DIR><DIR>Are we ready to begin? Yes, I am sure you are, so … here we go. I will give the 5-color-quilt cutting first, then the scrappy quilt.

You will cut WOF (width of fabric) unless otherwise indicated. Anything not cut today, as well as any leftovers from the strips, will be set aside and used later. (Colors D and E are not cut today) I have used the traditional half-square triangle method using 4-78“ blocksand made a small drawing if you need a reference on how to do it. There are plenty of places on the internet that give better pictures, for instance Fons and Porter magazine. (But you can use your favorite method -- specialty triangles, Thangles, Laundry Basket to name a few. Cut the strips as directions for your method calls for. I will not be giving any cutting instruction for these other methods to avoid confusion).
Gather the three 1-¼ yard pieces of fabric and determine which of the three 1-¼ yard pieces of fabric you want to use for the background. This will be color C. The others, naturally, will be colors A and B.

From Color A cut 2 WOF strip 4-7/8” wide, and then cut into 16 squares that will measure 4-7/8” square.

From Color B cut 2 WOF strip 4-7/8” wide, and then cut into 16 squares that will measure 4-7/8” square.

From Color C cut 2 WOF strip 4-7/8” wide, and then cut into 16 squares that will measure 4-7/8” square.

To make a half-square triangle
1) place an A and a B right sides together. Match edges.
2) Using a pencil or a disappearing fabric marker, draw a diagonal line from corner to corner, then add lines ¼” from the center line. Sew just to the inside (away from the center line) alone these two lines.
3) Cut on the original diagonal line. Press to the dark. Trim to 4-½” if needed.
4) You now have 2 identical half-square A-B half-square triangle blocks measuring 4-½”. Using an additional 7 A and 7 B squares, repeat this step. You will end up with a total a total of 16 A-B half-square triangles.

Using 8 A and 8 C, repeat the above to make 16 A-C combination blocks.

Using 8 B and 8 C, repeat to make 16 B-C combination blocks.

You will have 16 each of the A-B, A-C and B-C combinations of half square triangle blocks, a total of 48 4-½“ blocks.

********************
SCRAPPY
(NOTE: if you are using 5” charm squares, cut 4 WOF color C at 5” wide, make 32 of these Color C blocks. Make your half-square triangles as explained below about assembling the colors, and then trim to 4-½“ squares after cutting on the diagonal. This will be much easier than trying to cut the charm squares into 4-7/8“ squares.)

Note: if you are have trouble making half-square triangles come out to proper size, you may want to make all your blocks 5” square then trim to 4-½” after the diagonal sewing.

Traditional method of half-square triangle blocks:
From your color C, the background fabric, cut 4 WOF strips 4-7/8” wide, and cut into 32 pieces that will measure 4-7/8” square. From your selection of scraps, cut 48 pieces that measure 4-7/8” square.

Pick a light and a dark from your 4-7/8” scrappy blocks. Make half-square triangles from these two blocks, giving you 2 identical 4-½“ blocks. Using different combinations of light and dark, light and medium, and medium and dark, put together 15 more of the combination half square triangles, when cut and pressed you will have a total of you will have 16 of the 2- color combinations.

The last picture below gives you an idea of how I mixed up the colors on the A-B combination blocks. I took the picture and then assembled my sample - it was at that point I realized I should have made more of a contrast on the blocks with the background and scrappy fabrics, but didn't re-do them. My bad!

Pick 16 of the scrappy and put with 16 of the color C. If your background C is very light, try not to use too many light light scrappy colors with the C. Same goes if C is medium or dark - you want a contrast. Make half-square triangles - you will have 32 of the scrappy/color C half-square triangle blocks.

***************
I know this is a big lesson, but next week’s will be a bit less time-consuming if you need to catch up. Please, don’t feel under pressure to complete all this by next week if it is too much for you to do in one week -- it is just that many of the gals Pmed me asking for more to do in one lesson than I had done on the other mystery.
Next posting will be June 2[SUP]nd[/SUP].

Pictures came out really strange - they didn't all post in a line like normal. Oh well. And looks like you need to click on the blue words to get the little diagram to open. Sorry, don't know what went wrong.

SunlitenSmiles 05-26-2012 07:11 AM

thank you Judy.....now get well, ok, we want you feeling better fast !!!!!

whitepine 05-26-2012 07:16 AM

Nancia, I'm up in the observation car watching the scenry too. The last mystery quilt was so much fun, and I keep thinking about this one, but there is too much to do outside now. So, maybe the train will run again.

PokerDiva, except for the snow, the view from your porch, looking out at the valley, is so beautiful. I'm sure if you decide to leave it will be really hard.

PaintmeJudy, I hope you're feeling better. The down side of traveling these days seems to be that you can count on being sick afterward. At least the bug waited until you got home so you could enjoy the cruise. Get well.

Sadiemae 05-26-2012 07:18 AM

Thanks Judy! Take care of yourself and get well. My clue is saved, now time to get ready for the day.

nancia 05-26-2012 07:31 AM

i'm sure i'll be making this quilt later. sadiemae--can you tell me how you saved it? tia!

whitepine-- nice to have someone to sit with.:) this looks like it will be an interesting trip! and a really nice group to travel with!!

feel better real soon, judy. sounds like you had a wonderful trip. i hope when you're better you'll have some pictures to share!

LOL Cindy, you need to invest in a laptop! Bring it into you...sew a little..stretch a little..read the board a little
!

Everose 05-26-2012 08:20 AM

Oooooohhhhhh, the day has started great. Judy, hope you feel better soon. A nice hot bath with 1 cup apple cider vinegar, really helps the body ache.

I have printed the clues and will start putting fabrics together. I already made a trip to the grocery store so that I could get the frozen lemonade for rhubarb lemonade. So next will be a fire in the fireplace and put the feet up with a good book.

Have a great weekend.

I went out this morning and the rabbits got into my garden and had a feast last night... ate all the leaves off my green bean plants... Going to have to fix a better barrier to keep them out. Luckily green beans are not to hard to get going again.

Today will be a good day for me to get caught up on all the reading on this thread.. Ive been very busy this week and have not had the computer time I usually allow myself.

Hope everyone is doing well. I wont be able to get started on our first clue till the middle of next week. DD is making her big move to Amarillo, TX and were still packing and helping her get ready. She leaves Wednesday Morning ... feeling a lil sad but I suppose that is to be expected.

Have a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend all.. and I thank and Remember those of us who have served and are now serving for freedom.

urgodschild2 05-26-2012 08:44 AM

So excited and just so thrilled that the train has left the station. Woo Woo. Judy get better, rest, enjoy the weekend.
It is sunny but a little breezy here is So. Cal. and with the sun out my plants are calling for water so after doing that, I am off cutting then I am going up to the observation car for some refreshments and looking at the view.

irishrose 05-26-2012 09:43 AM

Oh, oh. When pressing my fabrics, I discovered I only have a yard of background. Any excuse for a trip to the fabric store, LOL. It's just a WOW so if I can't match it, I can replace it easily (I hope).

The rabbits didn't get hungry enough this winter to eat my burning bush. I can't believe how big it is without its annual pruning. I have more trouble with squirrels. I stood in the window and watched one eat the buds off my tulips. Grrr.

Off to the fabric store, grocery store and flower market. Two of the three are fun.

Yep nancia. I'm up on the observation deck with you.

yayaquilts 05-26-2012 10:16 AM

Hi all! We are heading home today from our two week RV vacation in Nor Cali. It was a fun time, camping with family and our BFF's and family! Little ones had fun getting acquainted; so fun to watch them play, side by side and together: 21 month old, 2 yr old, almost 4 yr old and 5 yr old. Their mommies were best friends growing up-we camped almost every summer of their lives together!! Brought back lots and lots of memories to we grandparents!!

We will either get home later today (if Hubby decides to drive all the way) or tomorrow sometime. We are about 9 hours from home, if no traffic. So can't hop on of this train as yet; but glad it has finally started!! I probably won't be able to start for a couple weeks, so I will join the others in the observation deck!!

[Once home will have a lot of stuff to do, cleaning up motorhome, etc, etc, etc. Then Tuesday I have outpatient surgery to remove a 6.6 cm cyst on my ovary. (long story short, I had kidney stones and was hospitalized last summer. At my 6 month checkup with my urologist I had an abdomen xray and he saw the cyst on it. So went to GYN-had ultra sound and there it was! Didn't have it 6 months ago! Doctor is pretty confident it's liquid filled-blood test came back normal--but he said it's best to remove these cysts.]

So I'm looking forward to seeing everyone's progress!!

Judy: so sorry to hear you aren't feeling well. Praying for your speedy recovery!!

To quote Jenniky: "
Have a wonderful Memorial Day Weekend all.. and I thank and Remember those of us who have served and are now serving for freedom!!"

I do have more orange fabric but thought that might be too much orange and although there is some red in the first fabric not sure about using that red and the bright green might be too bright and the darker green might be too dark with the black background. Thanks! Yes QIAD is big..haven't been in a while. Been in and out of town, and trying to "shop" my fabric collection first. I am in need of a few specific fabrics so may head over there in a week or so!!

irishrose 05-26-2012 11:06 AM

coopah, I'm with you. I swore no more HSTs for a while. Too many in the quilt on the machine and the one at church, but I'm game. I want these pastel Christmas fabrics gone, so I'm in. 48 isn't too many and they aren't tiny.

I need a glass of iced tea before I head out shopping - oh, open house cookies to bake, too. Club car, here I come.
