Row Robin Quilt Along! Starts March 2nd!

Welcome to the Row Robin quilt along! I am excited to start this new quilt along with you! last year we did a medallion quilt along and it was so much fun to see what each person did as their interpretation. This is a quilt along where you will be working on YOUR OWN row robin. No mailing involved!

The theme for this quilt along is: Where I find peace. Your inner joy where is this? This could be the beach! the mountains! the desert! I will offer each month along with the help of other players options for each item. Pick one that best suits the theme and let the fun begin! You can sew your row done invidual blocks that have items from that theme.. or you can make your row into a design that becomes a larger picture. I am here to help with ideas and know that the group as a whole will be right there to support and encourage and offer suggestions for ideas for your quilt.

The fun with doing this together is while we all have a different idea of what peace is to us.. we can enjoy working with each other to achieve a quilt we will truly love. Maybe its not for you? find out what peace is to the person you will be making it for. Maybe its a couch with a blanket a book and soft lighting.. maybe its a mountain stream you can go to sit and dream.. or a beach where the sun shines softly on you, the ocean slowly softly licking the shores! the options are endless. I would like each of you to think of what you want to do and be prepared to share it when we start this quilt top and let the creativity flow! there are no wrong ideas. No bad quilts. Its yours! enjoy it and join us in this grand adventure. On March 3rd I will announce the beginning quilt ideas and we will start and learn to do this together! The first and last rows of these quilts will be based on your center design and a traditional row robin design. blocks that represent the center picture :). You can make your quilt a wall hanging, baby quilt or as large as you like! one row per month until we are done! I think this will be four rows in the middle and one on top and bottom with theme blocks.

Love to see you join our little quilt along!

Elisabrat 02-15-2015 09:39 AM

I think you might find you have the fabrics that will work with this quilt but if you don't you have time to pick up a couple extras that will fit perfectly! feel free to trade fabrics with others if you are in need of waves or sand ask for it .. someone might need blues for sky or rocks for a riverbed. trade! also there are some terrific places to shop for what you are needing.. here on Keepsake or perhaps on another site with the perfect little pieces you might need. tada! a solution for every budget. keep the creativity going and lets show off are artsy side this time around. ok we show it off all the time :) but think of a painting your doing with fabrics. I am sure we will see some truly amazing quilts.

Linda - this sounds like fun. I don't think I have ever done a row quilt - but would like to do it.

happylab 02-16-2015 04:07 PM

This seams like a fun quilt along. I'll be following along.

Judith1005 02-16-2015 05:24 PM

I couldn't join in the fun last year. I think I will give this some thought and try to follow along. I really like the idea of no mailing.

Count me in, sounds like fun

VickiM 02-16-2015 06:23 PM

Pulled some fabrics for a "beachy quilt"; soothing to me & of course very fitting for here in Florida!

Have made row quilts, four unfinished row by row sitting in my closet as I write this. Count me in! I think I'll get one of my other row by row's out and finish that one too. I plan to finish mine by useing the quilt as you go method.

Elisabrat 02-17-2015 10:04 AM

wow thanks for joining! I need a volunteer to do a desert quilt and a volunteer for a mountain quilt! so you can post your concepts too and we can have one big happy selection of ideas. this is no way in any way lol an obligation following one of those three themes. There are so many holidays or maybe weddings or whatever you have in mind. the deal is we are sharing with each other our ideas. Our dreams.. and doing a row robin is the only requirement for playing :) I was also wanting to do a beach theme but will switch to one of the other three if someone else would like that theme to run for the quilt along (grin, hint hint) . I am open! I have a sis who would love the mountains theme and a son who would love the desert theme so I am golden on all three.

the first month will be a sky. We will all need to do a sky for whatever theme we have. so pick your fabrics now. Maybe its the ice storm that has hit the east coast. no probably not. but it might be night in your cozy vision of peace. it may be daytime. a storm on the way? clouds in the sky? raining? we all love something and find peace in our own individuality. so pick your sky and get your fabrics accordingly. This way your prepared to start with this grand adventure the beginning of next month. I have so many blues and scrappy blues that I think I am set. in theory. need something for a bit of clouds though.. tada. see its a good idea to think ahead of your own vision.

Row Robin Quilt Along

I am interested and it sounds like fun!

travelinggramma 02-17-2015 01:54 PM

will this be the top of the quilt? I am looking at beachy theme. So will either go with seagulls or the sun.

SunlitenSmiles 02-17-2015 02:11 PM

ok, I am in...fair warning, I am up to mischief ............ sky can be your own personal sky, right?

VickiM 02-17-2015 06:16 PM

I'm doing beachy...I will look in stash for sky. I have lots of cloud fabrics. Just gotta find one that will go with the colors I've picked out for the beachy theme.

whitepine 02-17-2015 07:31 PM

This sounds like too much fun to resist. It also sounds like it has already started. :) Elizabrat, I know you will have many surprises ahead for us. Even thinking about this type of quilt is a whole different way of thinking. What am I trying to show, what symbols are important and why, how in the world can something be expressed in quilting form. I'm thinking that I'll do some paper piecing for sure. It's been a while so I'm looking forward to that. Maybe all batiks on this one. Hmmmm. Many things to think about.

Sunliten, we're watching you.

m-fay 02-18-2015 12:21 AM

I was just going to stalk this one for a while, BUT...I've stalked long enough and I'm in. sounds EXACTLY like an idea I've had for ages with no idea how to do it. peace and tranquility to me is camping in our arid australian bush with corellas flying overhead, a kangaroo or 2 and some emus,, a camp fire and stew cooking in a camp oven. Can I do all that in this quilt and QAYG sounds a great way to go as well. I'm gunna love this!

Elisabrat 02-18-2015 09:42 AM

to answer your question on the Aussie scenario you can certainly do that in a row robin format. You should perhaps do a sketch of the scene you want to do (look no one will see it!) and then break it up in four sections. upper sky, lower sky upper scenario, middle ground and finally foreground. then you can do your rows accordingly! a kangaroo! wow your going to have fun doing that! I want mine to be more flowing? but seen so many row robins (hit pinterest up and type in row robin quilt ideas and shoot you will get a zillion then you can narrow it down to even other ideas and its terrific. same with google images type in row robin quilt and you will get so many to peak at you want this one and that one and a row from here and a row from there.. its fun. some of you will want to do just traditional and that is certainly ok! a row of bells and a row of snowmen and a row of snowflakes if that is what you want then do it! no one here to police you! its YOUR dream your vision of peace you pick what you want! tada!

I found a few images to share with you. thought you might like to see somethings to spark your idea bucket and get your juices going! its all about YOU. we all want and love something different. Like me, no crabs on my beach. none to worry about stepping on or jellyfish. OH NO! I am having a peaceful sand no footprints in it. just soft soft sand and a soft sky. soft water lapping the shores not waves. you see my best friend from 3rd grade and I have plans. we are going to this beach when we reach heaven. no noise, but soft water lapping, just us watching it in a lounge chair and that good looking pool boy bringing us drinks when our glass is empty. so I need a sky, a calm clear water, a beach and a couple lounge chairs. I need mai tai glasses and big beach hats to put in a row .. just something that is calm. maybe big flowers.. yup. try to put that image into a quilt. one way or another its going to be there. abstract? maybe. but it will be there. that is my gift to her. we both have a shortened clock life. I want to do this for her and know she will love it and get it. It will be a gift to her daughter when we are gone. She will be told our story also. This is the silly stuff we do to make life more enjoyable what the heck. you only live once! (here at least).

what is your plan and why?

Elisabrat 02-18-2015 09:47 AM

a more traditional style row robin but great ideas if maybe a garden is your favorite form of peace?

https://auribuzz.files.wordpress.com...g?w=714&h=1002

Elisabrat 02-18-2015 10:05 AM

to answer your question on row quilts look in member swaps. There have been several row robins where you each do a block and add it on and send it to the next. the trouble with those it seems is some go really smoothly and all are sent back. others go into mystery zones and well stay there. This swap is different as we are each sewing our own rows for our own quilts. upside is you get it all the way you want. not some good some bad its all your call :) I am not stating that the other way is not fun. just saying that .. it is all yours. no mailing costs and any failure to complete a project is totally your call. somehow that feels good to me. :)

whitepine 02-18-2015 11:18 AM

This is so exciting. I've never done a row quilt and have wanted to. I have a lot of ideas and the more pictures I see, the harder it gets to narrow it down. I think mine will be a specific place that I will make for my husband. We built a cabin on Prince of Wales Island in SE Alaska. It was a remote site that could only be accessed by water. All our building materials came in by small boat. We were surrounded by smaller islands, whales, eagles, seals, etc. There will be water, mountains, and trees. Maybe lots of trees. At the beginning, we had no electricity, no running water. Definitely off the grid. Mine will probably be the more traditional row approach because that's what my brain understands.

I would think it would make an easy QAYG because you could quilt in row.

CAS49OR 02-18-2015 01:17 PM

This looks interesting. I found all these images too https://www.google.com/search?q=Row+...w=1164&bih=832
and think I will just watch this thread for a while and see what you all come up with.

travelinggramma 02-18-2015 01:39 PM

Brat - I love your idea of having the center four rows making a picture with the top and bottom encasing it. I would like to make my cousin something special. She loves Ocean City MD. Her and her husband requested that when they die, her ashes are to go to the beach, and his to the ocean; so they will connect every time the tide comes in.....her words honest!!
So my middle will be a sky with kites, curvy water, and a beach
A sun will be shining from the top - and a row of flip flops(she LOVES them) for the bottom
Oh - I am really great in making plans - and hopefuly I can pull this off.
Everyone's ideas are so personal. Love the dreams coming together.

happylab 02-18-2015 03:52 PM

Linda; You come up with such great ideas!!! I just love this one!!!!! I'm leaning towards an Alaska theme. 2 years ago my DH and I went on a week cruise, followed by an inland excusion for a week. It was my #1 vacation. It was great and we saw so many wonderful and pretty things while there. This would make a great memory quilt, if it works out well from my brain to the quilt. So I hope I have time to work and complete this project in 6-7 months. I will keep you posted. Again thank-you for another fun adventure to start in March.

Teacup 02-18-2015 05:50 PM

OK, I love the whole idea of this project, love the theme, and I have so many ideas of ways to interpret it. I'm just afraid I won't get it done...but since it's not a swap, if I don't complete it by a particular deadline, I'd only be letting myself down. I'm going to join!

I'm using as my theme "Peace that Endureth." It is a line from one of my favorite old hymns, "Great is Thy Faithfulness." I'm going to use some of the images from this song that speak of peace for me...morning, sun, moon, stars, the change of seasons, nature. I have lots of ideas, but only a clear conception of a few of them. I'm sure I'll build my design as we go along. Thanks for the challenge!

Can't wait to see what fabrics you choose for this...you have such different fabrics there!:) And, because I know you, I knew you couldn't resist too long!

VickiM 02-18-2015 07:31 PM

I grew up in Southern California...grew up a "beach girl". One summer I stepped on a stingeray (never forget that pain). From then on, never will go into the water unless I can see the bottom...so didn't go in the water much after that. Also, grew up with a pool in backyard, so that water was fine. Since living here in Florida haven't gone in the water at all & seldom even went to the beach. But I remember the days before all that pain...now I can stick it in a quilt! I will add lots of things to it...memories & wishes of memories! That will do it for me..........:)

m-fay 02-19-2015 01:45 AM

Elizabrat. the middle pic is the sky that I love. will you be telling me how to do that or will I have to research it. Oh I cant wait to get started and I have done what you suggested and folded a paper into 5 sections, calling them, sky, distant landscape, middle land scape, fore ground (2 sections) and applique added after.

gramquilter2 02-19-2015 03:07 PM

Has there been a start date set yet?

Boop56 02-19-2015 05:46 PM

Oh my mind is running. I am on board but don't know which way yet. I think I know, but I have some research to do first. Let the fun begin.

SunlitenSmiles 02-19-2015 05:58 PM

March 2, Gramquilter2..... but lots of ideas are swirling around ahead of official start.

Macybaby 02-20-2015 05:22 AM

I'm considering it, though I keep getting confused as to exactly what is being talked about. I looked around more yesterday and "think" I may have a better idea. many of the row qults seem to be just rows of different blocks, but some do make more of a picture, but still noticable rows.

I found this page (third picture down) - is this sort of what this Row Robin is about?

http://quiltedleaf.weebly.com/mystery-history.html

I've got two ideas - going off the theme

One is the family farm (gone now), I though I could do the sky, back fields, house and granery, shop and newer red barn, old red barn and then forground. I figured I could run the "driveway" vertically up the quilt as the buildings would be laid out like they actually were. I've also got a lot of clothing from both my parents that I can incorporate in, so it will be sort of a "memory" quilt too. I have wanted to do some sort of memory quilt - I already did up sketches of the buildings, but so far nothing I've though of seemed "right", but I think this could.

The second idea is a flower garden, because gardening is my other passion - and that would work out well. Same basic idea of a garden path that goes up into the garden, with the back row being the sky, and the front being at my feet. I'd make a trellis with a rounded top for the boarder.

I'd incorporate some of my favorite aspects of the gardens I've had at the three different homes I've lived in as an adult - so it will be "made up" but based on parts of real gardens.

I've already found a "sky" I really like. I found some really neat night-time skys too.

On a side note, after looking at some row quilts, I was considering doing one that was the "garden" in each season, but that would not end up with an overall "picture" - which I think this project is intended to be.

dd 02-20-2015 06:10 AM

Wow Macybaby, you really thought this through. I love the farm idea. You could still have a garden in that one.
