Hi everyone, I think I will try this mystry train. I have scraps of lots and lots of fabric to use. I have one question .
Judy when you do scrappy to you plan or just pick squares and sew them together???

Even though I haven't quilted #2 or finished putting together #3 (which got interrupted by four Christmas quilts), I'm in for this ride. I have lots of charms I can use. Thanks, Judy, for doing yet another one. This sounds like fun. For now, all I have is some leftover shortbread cookies to add to our table. My diet starts after New Year's Day!

Evie,

Have you determined which New Year's Day? There is always Chinese New Years which falls a little later, specifically after the train ride ends.

paintmejudy 12-30-2012 08:47 AM

sewnso, can't wait to see your finished #3 -- please post a picture. And so glad to hear you like the pattern so much. It was my favorite of the first 3 mysteries.

pocoellie, food participation not a prerequisite, but you are welcome to snack on whatever is laid out in the club car! Glad you are along for the ride. And no rush to get it done, just add it to the list of to-do projects -- I don't like UFO, as I never seem to go back to them if I have labeled them as such. LOL

jaba 12-30-2012 08:48 AM

Almost missed the train until Elisabrat reminded me last night! I was sewing on batik blocks. I need to get started on the cutting, whacking and sewing. I'll check in later

whitepine 12-30-2012 08:53 AM

Wow, nine pages and it's only the first day. When someone mentioned breakfast tacos I decided I better jump on. That was after I'd decided that I just couldn't because of other needs. We'll see what happens. Good thing this isn't one of those bullet trains that's past before you can even think. I love reading this thread. I too would like to have the carrot marmalade recipe. I've never had it and love carrots.

paintmejudy 12-30-2012 08:58 AM

Jaba and whitepine, so good to see you again! You're going to like this project, I think. I hope! I liked it enough to start on a light-weight king size one. Only deadline I've set for it is April, when I take the heavy winter quilt off the bed.

whitepine 12-30-2012 09:05 AM

Judy, love your pine avatar. I was thinking of doing a tree quilt sometime with all the different tree patterns I could find. But I also like the symetry of yours.

cat-on-a-mac 12-30-2012 09:20 AM

sounds like fun

Michellesews 12-30-2012 10:10 AM

I don't have oodles of 4-1/2" squares, but I have lots of scraps and an Accu Go 4-1/2" square die! No stopping me now! Can't wait!

Thank you so much.
This was called Jeweled Forest, from a magazine Nov-Dec 2011 and the wall hanging is 3 blocks wide by 4 blocks long, with another border around the sashing and inner border - that is the pix posted here.. I am going to keep it up year round, as I didn't use xmas prints, just all different batik scraps, and it was too much work to only hang for one month out of the year!

I am so happy to find this thread, I had read and watched your other mysteries. They look like fun. I have never done a scrappy before so am happy to join this train. Now off to sort and cut some of my stash that just sits in the closet waiting for something like this,

JeanieG 12-30-2012 11:03 AM

Looks like lots of fun, I just love scrappy! However, I've got too much going right now to start with you guys. I will keep all the clues and make it when I get a chance! And of course, I'll enjoy the ride with everyone. Love to read all the comments and see the results!

Lstew2212 12-30-2012 11:06 AM

wow, I just love this quilting board. I am excited to start my first project. I am on the train.

paintmejudy 12-30-2012 11:22 AM

dingle, zennia and Lstew, glad to have you join us.

JeannieG, are you absolutely positively sure you cannot fit just one more teeny little project into your life?

Found this board last night and would like to come along for the ride. A mystery quilt that is scrappy sounds like fun. I have lots of scraps and I am looking forward to making this quilt. Thanks for letting me tag a long.

QuiltingKrazy 12-30-2012 12:29 PM

I think I can, I think I can, I think I can! Yep I can! Just got all my squares and rectangles cut out and was going to sew some together when.... I sliced my thumb with the rotary blade! dummy me was trying to get the lint and stuff off of it using my thumb. Not smart. I figured I better way for the bleeding to stop before handling any more fabric. Mine is going to be totally scrappy.

I also love your avatar quilt. Do you have the name of the magazine? Even if I don't already have it, maybe the library does.

roserips 12-30-2012 01:06 PM

Guess I will go diving in the scrap barrel and see what happens!

paintmejudy 12-30-2012 01:57 PM

Thank you, I love it too.
McCalls Quilting - Nov/Dec 2009 -- didn't realize it was that old, thought it was last year's. Paper pieced in case some don't realize what it is.

Ouch is right!! Usually I cut a fingernail off or someway the top of my knuckle gets a little slit. Went and looked at strips here and there from previous quilts and pieces, cut, cut and have enough blocks of 12 and probably enough in the bin for 6 or 8 more. Hmmm guess I just keep cuttin'. Didn't make a dent, if anyone needs some let me know and I'll send it to you, it would be a surprise. Please please don't cut into your "good" fabric for scrappy I'll send you all you want, if you're not doing controlled. So here's the pics............totally scrappy, usually I do strips of different quilts I've made all year. My kids come and look at the fabric and say, oh that's mine, who's was that? They recognize the material, kinda' cool and yep I keep those scrappy ones.

Pam H 12-30-2012 02:20 PM

I have 61 squares cut now. You'd think I could just make the smaller one, but no. It's gotta be the bigger one for me! I have started cutting 2 of each now. Plus I am thinking ahead and cutting 2 1/2" squares out of the scraps. Maybe Judy will plan another scrappy with 2 1/2" squares. hint, hint!
Judy I thought your avatar looked hard enough without seeing the borders. WOW! That is amazing!
I am also working on a wall hanging for my daughter's nursery. It has to be finished before her baby shower on the 19th but I am afraid to start it. I have an idea in my head for it so I guess I'd better just jump in. During the Packer game I will trace the elephants onto steam a seam and then I can at least get those cut out. I just don't know how big to make the background to get it started. Then I need to sketch out some trees to put on it. That part scares me too.

paintmejudy 12-30-2012 02:41 PM

No, Pam, no plans for 2-1/2" squares in the future. I really am not all that fond of them, even tho' I like the way they look when SOMEONE ELSE does them. LOL I also have a box of 3-1/2" squares ...... February is coming up...... No, I'm not going to use 3-1/2 squares,o't start cutting, gotta try something different.

Cindy60545 12-30-2012 02:47 PM

Jaba, I know that feeling! My GN, GS & I are all three doing the smaller one scrappy. We've got this clue's cut, just have to make the 9-patch blocks now, but DH distracted us. He's remodeling one of the bathrooms & keeps asking for help. I'm hoping to get all the blocks done tomorrow.

jaba 12-30-2012 02:56 PM

If I had a bathroom remodel going, I'd do the same thing. You bet honey I'll be right there, just keep him working!! It is really nice when they come home and know what fabric was their's I just can't give those away. Don't know what I'm going to do with all of them but when I kick the can they can figure it out. What a legacy I'll be leaving my poor kids, goin through all the stuff. Got rid of almost everything else, just material and sewing machines now. Will have to show them this site and give them names and addresses in my will and tell them to send ASAP.....

Lstew2212 12-30-2012 03:27 PM

so much fun going through my scraps, Already completed the first task.

cat-on-a-mac 12-30-2012 03:31 PM

Got all my blocks cut -- no duplicates in the 4 1/2 inc squares ... YEAH!

Judy, I was wondering about the A & B fabrics. You said high contrast, but what about prints vs solids? Would black and white work? I may wait to see what step 2 is before I "commit"!

My meal car has biscuits today (I am in the south, after all!)

Caroline S 12-30-2012 04:04 PM

I am about half done with cutting my squares. I spent most of the day going through totes of scraps, sorting, cutting, and organizing pieces into totes for strips and crumbs. Most of my scraps came from my aunts and mother. Most of the fabrics are 60s, 70s and 80s fabrics. My goal is to get all of those scraps used up. There were lots of garment UFOs, So it is obvious that Quilters are not the only ones who have UFOs.

irishrose 12-30-2012 04:24 PM

I can't stand not be involved even though #3 isn't finished. I will skip the black, red and white and go scrappy. Just to save time, I will check out some charm packs I don't care for, then start on the scraps. I have no trouble cutting yardage if I need to, though I rarely cut into a fat quarter unless I'm going to use a lot of it.

I have a baby quilt with a close deadline - I just found out today the shower is the 13th in another part of the country, so I want in it the mail by the 9th. Sewing machines, here I come. Can I take the tree down in the middle of January? I can't skip GS's basketball games and some are road trips.

I've seen enough holiday food. I think I'll bring some V8 juice with add ins for my first offering. Oh, and orange mimosas for tomorrow's brunch.

Cindy60545 12-30-2012 04:25 PM

We cut enough pieces out of charms for 3 of the smaller scrappy mystery quilts & I still have a ton left! I'll figure something out for those one day!

paintmejudy 12-30-2012 05:49 PM

cat on a mac - yes, wait until Saturday to commit to your A and B. When you see what is happening then, you will know what to use.

Irish, good choice! You won't be sorry to do this one, it will be a fun project.

Cindy, I know what you mean, there really is no such thing as a stash buster unless you are trying to cover a football field. You sew and sew and sew out of the scraps, and the amount never seems be less than it was, does it?!

sewNso 12-30-2012 05:51 PM

i haven't started yet. i just have like 6 more blocks to make on my 2nd DJ, then all the tri's. so i did a couple blocks today, and a couple tri's. just to get going on the tri's. i'll probably get going tues or wed on it. when do we have to have the lst clue done by? i'll re read, and see. something makes me think, we aren't even suppose to get startyed till after the lst.

i'll answer my own question. the 2nd clue is going to be given next saturday. so need to get them done this week.

Yes, I am in for the big one. I made the first 6 and decided since it was so much fun, I would go ahead and make 6 more. Lots of bright colors from some charm packs I have had for awhile. I was so excited to find I already had over 30 2 1/2 X 4 1/2 rectangles left over from the second mystrey ride. Yippee!!! Not much cutting on that part. Can't believe I already have these all done. Next Saturday will not come soon enough. Judy, what do you think about colors for A and B? Was thinking maybe a denim color and something else. ??? open to any suggestions.

Thanks very much.

I had a good time. :) The seats were comfy and big windows. I was traveling at night so not much to see. My ride was only 5 hours so not really long enough for a sleeper. I rode in coach. It isn't very noisy at all on the train. About the noisiest part was the people talking. The bathrooms are mansions compared to one in an airplane :) I like that you can just get up and wander when you want to. It's nice to be able to use your computer or charge your phone also.

Elisabrat 12-30-2012 06:24 PM

Ok I hate them Jan can I have yours? more interest I think lol.. guess they ARE my scraps I made eight blocks tossed out two too bright. I think controlled is more my cup of tea.
