It's exactly right! No problem you're perfect with what you've done and get those that you threw out right now. When you're done you can look at it and see different quilts you've made or swaps you're in, I love them per year for the memories. That's odd for me I know because everything usually has to match or I go crazy. These are just waaayyyyy different for me and I have no clue why.. I'm already looking at these squares and thinking of the quilts that they were in or table runners , or whatever. Oops not table runners, haven't looked at those scraps yet.

paintmejudy 12-30-2012 06:51 PM

sustraley and elisa, very pretty 9-patches! I like all of them.

As to the questions about colors for A and B, wait until Saturday, see what you are going to do with them, and decide then. You will know what to do. And Elisa, no smacking allowed, even if you ask nicely. And I must say I congratulate you on going scrappy and not trying to be matchy matchy.

marytoddliz 12-30-2012 06:52 PM

Linda/Brat, I love them! they are "Scrappy! so relax and enjoy the ride! and if you don't like it when you are done, Donate it! I am done with my 12 blocks... and now I suppose you want pictures! Sheesh... I really do have to go and re-read the instructions again, I still need some 2.5 by 4.5 rectangles?

I think I am going to go find a cuppa coffee with Irish Cream... I need something warm~ and coffee will work as I plan on sewing for hours, first day I have felt like sewing going to take advantage of it!

Sue, I love your blocks, they are really nice and scrappy! I like them all, I would do a solid scrappy quilt! Oh wait I am doing one! it is one of the work a little on it and then put it away kinda quilts. I am going to make it big enough to cover the whole living room! OK it just seems like that I have been working on it so long!

I love riding the train, I take it to my Son's all the time, I don't have to drive, worry about where I am going to park when I get there and I can read the whole way!

Once I took a train from Ohio to California with a 15 month old. When we got on the train he could take two steps then fall down... When we got to California he could run from one end of the car to the other! I think he was able to balance better. I don't know why just know he never slowed down until he hit 30! We went coach, but I really remember meeting all the nicest people. There was even a lady on the train that was quilting with a tiny hoop and stitching by hand. She was so nice, ended up being my Son's Adopted Grandmother, we stayed in touch for a few years, always wanted to find her again. Her name was Phyllis and she was from Cuyahoga Falls.

jaba 12-30-2012 06:55 PM

Didn't you feel my smack yet? That is the idea.....it doesn't match at all. If you want mine you best go back and look again....nada, nil, nothing matches......It just looks different because you've never sewn with it before. I just put them all in a big bag, shake it like crazy, dump it out and stir it around, put it beside my sewing machine and just grab, sew, grab, sew! What you see is what you get....go ahead "brat" it will keep you warm and snuggly.

carrot 12-30-2012 07:07 PM

I see a couple of Janiacs on here with me !!! I am almost done with my blocks--- about 8 squares and one tri and one corner left. It has been a long process but am looking forward to sewing everything together. Had Christmas with my kids and grandkids today so have not started putting my squares together-- but at least I cut my scraps into squares as I go along so I have that part done already !!! Looking forward to clue #2 :)

Nelco 12-30-2012 07:20 PM

I am with Belfrybat. I have not completed the last one and I got my ticket for this train. Wish me luck on this one.

Elisabrat 12-30-2012 08:42 PM

ok no smacking on this train. yes mom.

I am going with it. I will survive to live another quilt. I will finish this one also because I chose to start it and it did make a dent in my fabrics lol. I actually think Jan that since most of these are NOT my scraps maybe that made a difference? I didnt purchase but maybe three of the fabrics in them. The rest were someone elses dont need that anymore scraps. probably makes a difference I think. I found three fabrics out of all of them that I would purchase. two were my scraps lol. I have made a lot of things out of fabrics gifted so not complaining and this will probably come out ok. I do love uncontrolled scrappy. I am just outta my comfort zone thats all. Ms conformity here. Lady at dialysis wore this tie die looked like grateful dead sweatshirt in bold bright colors. faded jeans with a pale pink lace onthe side and no idea what costume party she was attending (she wasnt she manages the place yikes) but I was in whoa THAT does NOT match stressdome watching her flit around. I wanted to change up something and change it up fast. that is just me. my socks match my shirt if they are not pant colored. and only cause we sit in ourchairs with our feet up for hours do I wear those crazy socks ..they were gifts and are fluffy as all heck with fur collars. egad. well if someone is stuck staring at your feet might as well dress them up in fluff. so.. the brat is a failure with relaxing and just ..going with the pick and pull flow. I am suprised seriously .. learn something about yourself every day if you reach far enough.

irishrose 12-30-2012 09:48 PM

Brat, are a first born child? You sound like my oldest daughter. I deliberately made one side of her b'day quilt scrappy and guess what? She loves it. She may like the organized side better, but it has appliqued flowers so I don't blame her.

reeskylr 12-30-2012 09:57 PM

Wow, I'm glad I got on board when I did, the place is filling up. Ok, got the patches cut out, I have a lot of duplicates, but that is okay too! I found some honey meade at the liquor store we're gonna try for New Years Eve, so I'll bring a few 'thimblefulls' to the club car. Hehe

I missed the carrot marmelade/jam recipe if it was posted?

Julielhs 12-30-2012 10:47 PM

Elisabrat ~ SMACK! I think that they look GOOD and scrappy, I like them, I hope that mine will look as good as yours.

Pam H 12-30-2012 11:21 PM

I FINALLY got my squares and rectangles all cut. WHEW! I sewed together several threesies. Hope to finish them tomorrow and post a pic. Mine is kind of a controlled scrappy. I just cut and cut and cut putting them in piles of 10. When I got to 100 I put them in piles by color to see what I needed more of. I am just kind of grabbing from different piles to sew them together but kind of trying to have contrasting lights and darks next to each other.
I also worked on the wallhanging. I need to figure out how big it is going to be so I can sew together the ground and sky fabrics. Then I can iron on the elephants and trees. Then the leaves and the cutest little birdie. There will be cotton and flannel and the tree fabric is from an old bed skirt that looks kind of like suede and it is the perfect shade of brown.
Brat, I noticed a diagonal of pinks going through one of your blocks! Made me think maybe I should have done some of that matching up colors.

Elisabrat 12-31-2012 01:18 AM

oh lordy dont get me going on maybe I should fix some rows lol cause then its all controlled blocks. next one perhaps still use up scraps but in a cooridinated way. would have been cool one block reds, one blues, one greens.. could have been cool maybe? NEXT one I know. not going there la la la I didnt say that. cant hear me.. sigh. not working sounds good still. and that wall hanging sounds adorable hope you share it with us when your done or tell us where to go check it out. who is it for??

Evelyn 12-31-2012 05:45 AM

What fun I had on a stay in snow day! I had lots of 4 1/2" blocks already cut for my I Spy Linus projects. I chose 54 different ones and got the 6 blocks made! Now I'm anxious for the next "drill".

My ds in a railroad engineer so I know what a "drill" is!

Beautiful colours in your blocks! However, it looks like you tried to control them? Go wild and don't try to match colours at all. Oh, the joy of scrappy!

paintmejudy 12-31-2012 06:54 AM

Oh my goodness, lots of chatter this morning, everyone must have had a good night's sleep! I know I did - really tired after putting away all the inside house decorations. Tomorrow will take down the outside lights, and then it's over for another year. With Thanksgiving being so early, and I am one of those nut cases who puts up lights the day after T-day, seems as if that stuff was floating around for a long, long time!

Beautiful 9-ptches showing up, and more people joining the mystery. So glad to see all the new gals. I have my prototype all done and quilted, but last night I started on 9-patches for the king quilt I want to make, and had gone to Joann to buy the batting -- got some low-low loft, hope it will be lightweight enough for a summer quilt.

Hope everyone has a nice New Year's Eve and a good start to the new year. I always figure the up-coming year will be better than the old one.

meanmom 12-31-2012 07:02 AM

I had decided there was no way I have time for this. Last night I was up in my sewing room and started pulling out stuff to make it , so I guess I am in. I have leftovers of a charm pack from my daughters quilt. I am not a charm pack type of person. There are 39 squares left. SO I guess I will cut some more squares. I will probably have to make the big one to use up more scraps. I will have to wait to pick the A and B fabric until I see the instructions. I have trouble making thing totally scrappy as I have to have an order to my quilts.
Does my A and B fabric have to be all the same thing or can it just read as almost the same?? I don't have a lot of big pieces of scraps.

Elisabrat 12-31-2012 07:32 AM

lowlow loft? got me I use all cotton batting and I think youcant get less loft than that stuff. 1/4 inch maybe? thin. I love it in summer quilts almost bedspread thickness.. my favorite. I still think they are warm as all heck.

meanmom gosh I love your name. My kids would have sworn I was the meanest mom ever when they were little.. I was told that oodles of times!

Judy a king size quilt? swoon. I have never done one of those. all those pieces! cutting for weeks on end they found her exhausted melted into her soon to be quilt covered in little squares.. fingers worn offf.. like that old song Worked my fingers to the bone what do you get? bony fingers.. bony fingers. I love that song btw its like super funky hillbilly country.. bony fingers.. bony fingeeerrs.. now that I want to see your skinny little fingers holdingthat monster quilt! show us show us oh you cant .. we will know the secret to the train ride.

carrot recipe upcoming right? and I am hungry whats for breakfast? if I am cooking we can all have our daily apple. I am off to grab one right now. now that..is a good breakfast..

paintmejudy 12-31-2012 08:05 AM

meanmom, so glad you decided you needed to join our mystery. There is always room for one more project. And A and B need to have good contrast, you will see why on Saturday.

Elisa, you are too funny! Yeah, boney fingers... love it. My problem with the king quilt is that I cannot get all that material under my machine and don't want to pay to get something made from scrap (backing will be hunks of leftover stuff) and in that size quilted, so will make the sections in long strips and do quilt-as-you-go with a meander. Cotton batting like Warm and Natural in summer here is still too warm, this stuff I bought is almost unmeasureable so will see what happens. The air conditioner cranks all night long in summer, but I keep the temp cool enough to sleep under a thermal blanket, but my quilts are too heavy. (And I have made 3 king quilts, not that much bigger than a queen, really.)

Pam H 12-31-2012 08:19 AM

The wallhanging is for the nursery of my first grandchild due February 23. I am VERY EXCITED!!!! We will find out the sex when it is born. I will be doing daycare when my daughter goes back to work part time.
Judy, are you sure you need to use batting? I saw a lace quilt at a quilt show last summer. She said she used air for batting to make it light weight and cooler for summer use.

jaba 12-31-2012 08:28 AM

For a very light weight batting use flannel. It works great.

Quilt Lover Grandma 12-31-2012 09:16 AM

you can tell I am new to this. I just posted this message on the end of mystery quilt 3. What I said is that my husband and I do quilts together. Must admit that he does the cutting as I am a bit handicapped. But we love to do mystery quilts and have a big project for this year. We hope to make 15 fleece lined scrappy quilts for our daughter's kindergarten class. They are supposed to take little naps in the afternoon and she has limited success getting them to do so. We figure a nice cozy quilt and soft music will do the trick. This sounds like a good quilt to make for a couple of them. I don't understand the food and train ride aspect of this project. But I should be on a diet anyway.

Oksewnsew 12-31-2012 09:25 AM

Hey PMJ (Judy), the neighbor's lights will be up sooner for Christmas 2013! There's only 3 weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas! I'll definitely have to get my stuff up earlier, if I want to enjoy it. Don't do much outside anymore, but inside, oh yeh!

Seaside gal 12-31-2012 09:41 AM

I think I will join in. I cleaned up my sewing room, took down wallpaper, put in a new floor, put all my sewing stuff away and then lost the incentive to make anything. This sounds like the way to get back to sewing again. I'm jumping on the train.

Carrot Marmalade recipe

For those of you who asked for it. The original recipe came from a recipe book that my DS and DDL brought me from Belize.

10 cups grated carrots
10 cups sugar
6 oranges
4 lemons (hint: zest the lemons and dry for future use)

Optional ingredients:
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp allspice
1 tsp ground cloves
Habanero Peppers (for those of us who like a bit of taste bite) (Habanero pepper have a fruity flavor and work well with any kind ofjams

Pineapple

Wash and thinly peel the oranges being careful to avoid the white pith. Slice thinly or put through a food processor. Take the peeled oranges, section, remove the white membrane and slice into small pieces. Squeeze the lemons and add to orange peel mixture. Add the sugar to the orange and lemon mixture and let it sit overnight. Next day grate the unpeeled carrots and cook 2 hours. I add peppers or spices during the last hour of cooking. Seal hot mixture into jars and process in a hot water bath for 10 minutes. This recipe can be easily cut in half for smaller batches.

Thanks for the info.

OOOOOO coopah - what happened - thought you were along for this ride too -- we will miss you.

Well, life has come along and given me a good smack (not the kiss kind of smack, the hit kind of smack), so I'll sit this one out, but will meet the train and LovelyL with the tea and scones. Just need to get my equilibrium back. All you all have fun, and I'll be on the next mystery for sure! :-)

Jaba and Pam - thanks -- I thought of both those alternatives, and will make a final decision when I get closer. I can always take back the batting I bought.

Lstew2212 12-31-2012 12:39 PM

I love the colors you used in your 9 patch. cute

Garnet1265 12-31-2012 12:54 PM

I'm jumping on board for my first train ride! Think I'm going to use my Depression fabric squares for this one. Then will need to get the other 2 fabrics for A and B.

Elisabrat 12-31-2012 01:14 PM

Pam was goingto say finally someone who just grabbed and sewed then upon closer look you didnt do that..you put all darks in corner/center or a light color in the cross pattern I literally grabbed belfry. I was trying to be spontaneous and seeing everyone else was a bit morecontrolled I wish I had done that. I have light next to light dark next to dark crazy pink next to black gold patterns.. its well scrappy.

As to the food aspect you see its virtual food. we all share have as much as your mind can imagine and zero calories. we are grown up kids at times which is alright with most of us am I right? We take it light and that works pretty good. I hope you and your husband share photos of what you produce and add to the chatter.. we chatter as much as we quilt at times. we as in ME finger pointed right back here no need for all of you to stand up in your chairs and point at me its notnice.. lol

I have 3/4 of the top together for the rubys boom quilt. busy morning and a good one. nap time for bonzo then the post office.. Happy New Years to anyone who is celebrating (this should mean ALL OF YOU) .. one does not have to hit the town to celebrate actually its quiet simple. Just wake up tomorrow. TADA reason to celebrate! I plan on celebrating for sure!!
