I was just watching QVC selling an air fryer for $99. It was tempting because it wouldn't heat up the kitchen, and I hate greasy smells. I didn't buy it... but 33,000 sold today... sounds interesting. They're going to demonstrate it again after the Vitamix guy, so I'll watch and decide then.

I bought one of these on a shopping channel and ended up sending it back. I had hoped it would "fry" frozen French fries but it didn't. Most things had to be made from scratch not frozen. Perhaps they have changed the way that works with the newer models ?

Feffertim...glad to get feedback from someone who has actually used it! I've been on the fence all winter about buying one.
When you do french fries, do they get crispy on the outside or just brown?
For everyone else..I've been researching these for a while now, google reviews...from what I can glean there are lower end models that the heating won't get up to a high enough temp to get anything crispy, so you have to watch for that.
The other thing I keep seeing is "nonstick"...is this teflon? Sure looks like it, but I can't get an answer as to what this non stick stuff actually is? I've been leaning toward the models with glass bowls for ease of clean up and to avoid the non stick lining on the plastic models.
Reviews on line seem to favor Phillips brands..but for all I know they can be put up by Phillips! That's why it's good to hear from someone that actually has one.

I've had mine for about 12 months and love it. I have only use a smear of oil once. Just brushed a little oil across the top of the food. Mine is a Phillips. I only have a small one as I live alone. Chips are perfect, crispy and golden on the outside light and fluffy on the inside.

DH's bro did the exact same thing. His wife was diabetic from a young age & knew all about the diet/food plan she followed.BIL would have none of it & was well known in their small town restaurants.Eventually they moved to a long term care facility. When asked how he liked it,he said "they give me all the pie I want".Was an expensive place ,but food was number one for him.Food is a powerful want.

I watched the "air fryer" demonstration again and it looks like they're just rebranding an old technology. Their function is similar to the portable convection ovens with the glass bowls from the '90s. We bought one to use in our camper 17 years ago and loved it for roasts, chicken, veggies... never tried french fries.

So, I pulled out a bag of Ore-Ida crinkle cut frozen fries and my old portable convection oven. I sprayed the fries with Pam Original, used the upper rack, 425 deg. and 20 minutes later I had delicious crispy french fries.

The glass bowl with mine is heavy. If these new appliances work as well as my old one, I may get an "air fryer" for chicken breasts, fries, and other small meals.

Sounds like a good idea, especially for summer. I have not seen the commercials, stations I watch don't show them. I don't watch shopping channels. I don't watch much TV.
