We have Dish and the cost keeps going up and they play the same old movies over and over--goes out with the least cloud cover or snow or rain or even wind. Tired of all the advertising channels and selling channels. We are paying $78 now for the basic. No new channels--just the same old tired ones.

Wish we could get one but we have hills all around us so it won't work.

This is the antenna we got from Home Depot - it is great! Only $19.97 - yes, you only get local channels but we get quite a few other ones too. This seems to be the one you're looking for. Also, think about investing in a blu ray player to watch your DVD's. We have Amazon Prime and pay the $99 membership fee and get to watch movies streaming through Amazon Prime too. Anyway, if you just get the antenna from Home Depot, you'll be happy - you save on those terrible cable costs.

IMHO, cable and satellite TV is fast becoming a thing of the past. And they know it. When I pulled the plug, I was offered less than half $33) what I was paying for 2 years to continue. The longer I resisted, the longer the term offered was extended. If you are getting basic for $78, I can almost guarantee you that there are many customers who are getting the same thing you are for much less because they threatened to pull the plug.
Also (IMHO) i don't trust any advertisement such as the antenna ones on TV. As a professional librarian, my instinct is to research it. Almost always the reviews are just terrible.
So what's best? Your area will dictate that. My neighbor here in remote, rural eastern NC has an new but old type rooftop antenna (cost $150) her sweetie installed and she gets 25 good channels almost all the time. Considering we basically live in a big swamp, that's amazing.
I use an indoor, flat antenna (less than $60) that's mounted high on the wall in my second floor studio. I mounted it myself with those little stick on clips/hooks you can pull off if you need to. It gets me all the choices I need from the major networks and more. I also use streaming via Chromecast and have Amazon Prime which has a great variety of content available with their Prime program. I am a Netflix streaming subscriber as well but lately I am finding that the old mail out DVD program has more recent movies that I want to watch so I am thinking of just doing that for a while instead of the streaming one.
BUT I wouldn't even need what's on Amazon or Netflix or any of the other pay-to-stream companies if I just used YouTube and others. What's available between YouTube and my local channels brought in by antenna is plenty to meet my needs. What that means is that, realistically, my chromecast and my antenna (both one time purchases) could easily provide all the viewing choices I need and more and at no cost.

Hope this is not TMI and good luck as you choose your path with this.

My kids have all cancelled their cable services. They use roku on the big tv and get everything they need. The small tv in the guest rooms (where I stay when I visit) are connected to a small antenna. One uses the one you are speaking about, but she lives in a major city and has strong signals. Another lives a bit out of the city so she has her spare tv attached to an outside the window antenna. BTW - with the Roku, we all get everything because you can add extra users with services. One of us pays for netflix, one pays for amazon, one pays for Hulu and since I have HBO, they can all use HBO go on their sets. And the amazon prime membership, it also allows all of us to purchase items with the free shipping. We just got tired of paying $150+ a month for 200 channels of which we only watched a couple dozen. Now we pay under $25 a month each and see everything we want and lots of movie options. Only problem is that some can't be viewed until the following day - no big deal.

How does Sling work?

I am getting to the point that I cannot afford my DirecTV and will be looking for other ways to cut the cable out of my life. I just can't believe how expensive it has gotten.

DS has been using several of the antennae on his TVs -- he lives in town and like others have said he gets HD over the air and a bunch of channels. He gets his movies from Netflix and a couple of other cloud services. We can't get local stations where we live or I would dump the cable.

I have a flat antenna, I think it's the same as the Leaf already talked about. I works fine for me, but it all depends on where you live, the surrounding terrain, and how far it is to your local broadcast stations. Check out the antennaweb website mentioned earlier, it shows a map of your area and gives you an idea of what you can receive. I wouldn't buy the "As Seen on TV" one, it looks pretty cheap.

Marge954, you must live somewhere near me, those are the same stations I get. And on a good day, channel 2 over in Greensboro.
