You can also use cornmeal they eat it and drink water and then they swell up and die.
Borex will also work well on fleas. If you have carpet in your house just sprinkle some on your carpet leave it for a few day. then Vacumn it up. It will freshing up the carpet and kill the fleas. Safe for you and your pets. If you don't want to try that
Diatomaceous Earth Food Grade. Work on every thing.

Try Boric acid powder. Pretty harmless to humans (unless you ingested a humungous amount) but they get it on their feet and take it back their nest and everyone goes feet up. (not instantly - but just picture that - an entire ant hill of ants laying on their backs with their three pairs of tennies in the air) We used this in Guam for both ants and roaches. Threw it in the dead spaces behind the kitchen cabinets and ran a line of it down the edges of the carpets by the baseboards.
It's pretty cheap - can get it in the drug store - likely is what Borax is made from but I didn't look up the ingredients of Borax so don't really know.

I used to buy some stuff for outside ant hills. I don't remember what it was called though. It smelled incredibly bad and I had to get it at the real garden center. It's for mixing up and spraying bag worms. It really worked. I would just sprinkle a little around each ant hill and they would be gone by the next day. I had a really bad ant problem because it was a new house and because of digging the foundation it disturbed all the ants.
