Next year doesn't mean anything to him, it has to be immediate and you have to mean it, you have to be willing not to do or not give him things. And maybe regress some things, treat him like a baby, make sure he gets naps and everything else, if he is independant in ways like walking while shopping, strap him into a shopping cart or stroller, spoon feed him baby food. Everyone has to be on board though for it to work.
