Ditto on sewgull. I had a friend who watch a woman shoplift sandwich meat; hint - she was wearing a dress so guess where stuff went. <eeww> they caught her & arrested her; the stuff went into the trash.

Years ago I worked in the deli department of a grocery store. There was a man that would come in almost every day and steal a sub-sandwich by stuffing it down the front of his pants. I guess he figured that no one would have the nerve to ask about his "bulge." We also caught a woman walking out with a 10lb CANNED ham between her legs, several things under her hat, in her huge purse and after she was arrested the police found several other things stashed various places on her body.

You know, sometimes I could forgive someone for stealing food if it's because they're hungry and truly can't afford it. But I was at Family Dollar one day right after they had caught a woman shoplifting picture frames!!! I'm sorry but no one NEEDS a picture frame badly enough to risk jail. And besides, if you were going to steal from a store wouldn't you make it a high-end store, not a dollar store. The time is going to be the same.

For a second job I worked as a 'floor walker', the term used for those of us that walked the store watching for thieves.... I had a blast!!! Let's see I stopped and 'arrested' all ages from grade school to retired. There was no item that was not taken. Greeting cards, candy, clothes, audio tapes (this was before the CD and DVD's) VCR's, books, jewelry, cosmetics, pocketbooks, shoes, hardware and of course cigarettes, just to remember a few things I recovered doing my job. I caught amateurs and people that shoplifted for a living. They will put items down their pants, up their shirts, under their hats, in purses, in other shopping bags, on their feet, some even plan real well and put a thin pair of pants on under their jeans and tie the ankles so what they put down their pants won't fall out while walking out of the store. Some people stop and come back into the store when caught and others take off running. Some just drop the merchandise and run others deny they have anything. That is why a floor walker has to know what item the person took, where they put it on their body and any other question the police may ask of them. Also, if the person that you stop has stated they don't have anything you can not (at least when I was doing this) search that person. The only thing that a floor walker or 'store detective' can do is retain that person. The police have to do the search.
Now you know more about that person in your favorite department/grocery store that you think is 'weird' then you ever wanted to know. If you see someone sneaking around peaking through boxes or in the middle of the clothes racks, please pay them no mind. They are the people that are trying to keep the cost of items down for you by catching all of the fools out there that think that shoplifting doesn't hurt anybody and the store can well afford loosing some stock!

When we were kids we had a little Ben Franklin store here in our small town. There was a candy counter with big "fish bowl" type jars of candy. When we got to the car my little brother was chewing on something. (he was maybe 4) Mom asked him what it was and he said it was a jelly bean. Mom asked how he paid for it. He said he didn't. Mom made him go back into the store, find George (the 6'6" owner), tell him he stole a jelly bean, pay for it(she gave him a penny) and then buy a nickels worth of candy. When George walked him back out to the car he had a sack of jelly beans that he could hardly carry! But I don't believe he ever took anything else that didn't belong to him.

I was in the grocery store a few weeks ago and after I paid for my stuff at the register I went and talked to a guy in customer service about something that was mis-priced. It got resolved and as I walked out the store with my cart it suddenly stopped and I didn't. I had a big old bruise on my leg and the biggest surprise to see that my cart didn't move. I was told that it was an anti-theft device. You have a certain amount of time between leaving the register and going out the door. If your cart 'times out' then the wheels will jam. This is because people will run out the door with a cart full of stolen food! Incredible times we live in.
