Thanks everyone for your help. I forgot about Harbor Freight - there's one a few miles from the house.

You should be able to find cotton cording in any fabric store in the home dec department. I think they've quit selling cotton clothesline because it stretches when it gets wet. All the clotheslines I see now are made from nylon or have some sort of plastic sheathing over the cord.

i buy 1/4" & 1/2" cotton clothesline at the dollar general store- it's about $2.50 for 50 feet- also comes in 100 foot packages. i've also bought it at Ace hardware, home depot, and lowes.

Our Home Depot and Lowe's doesn't have cotton rope - it's all poly stuff. I tried Harbor Freight and Dollar General - nothing. The fabric stores have upholstery cording, but it's expensive.

I get mine at the local hardware store (Ace). They have 50 and 100 foot rolls.

Trivets, what a great idea. Do you have a pattern?

I buy it in 15metre lots at the local dollar mart shop.Perhaps you could find it in a similar store in the States? At the risk of sounding like I am stereotyping, they are usually run by Chinese in this country.I've seen it on the net on Amy Sims' site and you can buy it in 50 or 100 foot lots. The cotton rope is easy to sew on the machine.I used 100/16 needles when I made my bowls.
