Pam S ..... You would work from the right side.
However, you try to keep both sides looking just as good as the other.
The challenge is for darning to disappear into the blanket, so it can't be seen.
Same for socks ... plus you don't want it to be lumpy and humpy on the foot!

I have never darned, but I can remember seeing a "darning egg" in my Grandmothers sewing basket.

Does anyone know of some good books, or websites on this subject? I'm really interested in it as an art form.

I haven’t a clue how to darn and have no intentions of learning - BUT - I do have a darning egg from my Grandma (she even darned sheets even though they could well afford to replace them. Try showing a darning egg to a young person, maybe even one in their 20s and see if they can guess what it is!!!! I’d be interested in the answers🥴🥴🥴🥴🥴

And they have no idea what a "church key" is either.

My kids definitely know what a church key is...LOL. Although, these days the tend to use their lighter to pop off a beer bottle top.

While I do a little darning here and there. My older brother Jack darns his socks and other clothing all the time. From what I understand his Mom taught him and his 3 other siblings to mend their clothes. My Mom taught all of us the same. I do all my own alterations/mending as well as Husband's, one of our sons and the grand kids clothes.
