I always found the stitching area hurts the toe.

What do you use for darning material - embroidery floss, yarn, etc?

I really find it strangely comforting and relaxing to do.

    Anyone else darn?
My hubby expects me to darn his socks. I WILL NOT. He's got razor blade toenails------I'd have to darn every pair, every week. Every one has holes by the big toe.

I do repair some of my late DH's thick wool Ragg socks. I wear them around the house, and to cover the holes I sewed on a thick padding of felt I got in a yard sale. Then to prevent slipping, I sewed on a layer of rubber stuff you use on Pajama feet. Now that I have a lot of labor and love in them they'll last another 40 plus years. We both wore that type on our back packing honeymoon in 1967. My socks wore out first, for whatever reason I don't know. I love those socks.

I actually use the darning thread. You usually can find it near the crochet thread. Seems to work better than regular thread

I just broke down and threw out the pile of socks I had planned to darn but have never gotten around to. Sometimes when I darn, I pretend I'm Caroline Ingalls from Little House on the Prairie. She was always darning. Is that TMI?
