I always wondered about the motto.....

"Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds."

Turns out it's not really the motto of the USPS at all.

I have family members who are letter carriers. They deliver in all weather despite road conditions. Icy walkways are about the only exception. Our mailman always delivers but we make sure to shovel out and snow blow out as best we can the mailbox. He does deliver to everyone, regardless of conditions, who has mail even if they haven't tried to clear out their mailbox. We do b/c DH works for the post office but not as a letter carrier.

Yes, the Post Office does really deliver in the snow.. but, its not the PO that does, its the letter carrier, who sacrifices so much in the cold, the wet, the dangerous, and most often times, unshoveled sidewalks, just to get us those special packages, or squishies! For 33 years, the man I married, delivered mail to our town, and in those 33 years, he missed ONLY 4 days of actual work due to sickness, or injury. Yep, you heard it.. He was bitten many times by dogs, ( and one cat ), he suffered deep injury to an ankle, when someones porch stair, covered with built up snow piles, decided to cave in, basically trapping his foot because he could not move.. He was unable to deliver mail for weeks due to that injury, yet, on crutches, in walking boot, rehab ect, he went to work to sit behind a dreaded desk, answering phone calls, doing hate paperwork.. Yet he never missed work in that incident. He really did deliver in our often times, below zero weather, and 2 or more feet of snow.. " Yes, Virginia, there is a hero " lol..

We live in a subdivision that is a rural route. If the main roads are clear, our mail is delivered....but we always clear the snow from the road in front of the mailbox so the mail person can easily drive up and deposit the mail. That's how much we like to get our mail and how much we respect our mail person.

My hat is off to those mail carriers especialy on the walking routes. I could never do that job, they are out there with those heavy bags in all the garbage weather, and Ohio has lots of garbage weather!

Ours doesn't, however, we're in Georgia where a) it normally doesn't snow all that often and b) we don't have snow equipment like folks up north do. So when we do get snow, even a little bit, it pretty much shuts everything down.

Also, we live on a very steep hill which gets slick very easily. Even in the rain, your tires will spin coming up the hill.

So nope, we don't get mail if there's even an inch or two of snow on the ground.

All that said ... it's snowed 3 times already this winter (had a white Christmas!), and they're saying we could get 5-6" on Monday! I bet there's not a loaf of bread or a gallon of milk in any store within 50 miles! ;)

As long as I have a place where she can drive up to my mailbox cleared, she comes!

When we lived in northern Indiana and had a lot of snow much of the winter, we had to keep the area around the mailbox cleared. If the mail carrier had to get out of the vehicle, you would be passed by.

Ours Is delevered in all weather. The only time it is not, is if the roads are shut down because of weather. For instance the Thursday before Christmas we had a nasty rain/ice storm and closed the roads. Not very often are they closed usually about 4 times a year maybe less.
