I watched a special on cats and they have a very subtle way of communicating. Part of it is exactly what you describe: Not maintaining eye contact and ignoring to a point.

My mom does not like cats and complains that anywhere there is a cat, my mom is "the chosen one." I suggested that she shower the cat with attention, talk real loud and stare at it. Haven't heard any complaints recently.

That said: congrats to that adorable addition. It is easy to become a dog AND cat person.
