Is there a book that tells you all about what you should set your stitches at for different fabrics. I was never taught about changing this for different materials. I remember when my grand daughter took a class on making a tote bag the teacher had her set the stitch length different because of the thickness. when I learned at school Many years ago it was set and you never touched it. So I have always used what the machine is set at.I tried the manual that came with the machine but it just tells about different types of stitches-zig zag-etc. Would real like to know how not to screw up my machine anymore. Thanks

I've seen a book a tuesday morning that teaches sewing different textiles. Didn't really pay attention to name/author-just brief notice

I don't pay much attention to books. I play around until it looks right to me.

Have you tried cleaning your bobbin case? That cured my "jack hammer" and it had nothing to do with the stitch length.

The owner's manual for my (old, zig-zag only) Janome gives the range of stitch lengths you should consider for each type of stitch the machine does, and those ranges are pretty wide for each kind of stitch. The only time it suggests you check stitch length is when you stitches are puckered, then you should shorten the stitch length.

I find that problems with stitches are most often related to the size of your needle, what kind of thread you're using and the type of fabric you are sewing rather than the length of stitch.
