Would you just coat the thread in Modge Podge, rather than submerging it?
I sort of remember dipping it.

You will want to soak the thread in whatever solution you choose, so that it will hold it's shape better, once it is dried :D:D:D

My Mother stiffened ruffled doilies with sugar water solution. I remember being scolded for licking the edged of the doilies!

I've used all the above. They all worked well. It would depend on what I had on hand.

Quote: When I was a kid we would make Easter eggs by wrapping crochet thread soaked in something around a balloon. Let it dry over night and then pop the balloon and have a wonderful lacy Easter egg. Now my question...........what did the thread get soaked in? Flour and water........cornstarch and water or something else. I can't remember. Help......I want to do this with DGD.
We did this with powdered starch that came in a small blue box. Can't remember the brand name, but we could make it as thick or as thin as we wanted by controlling the quantity of boiling water we put it in. Thanks for reminding me of it. froggyintexas

We used sugar water. LOTS of sugar in that water.

I stumbled across this craft idea and thought it was so cute...

Crochet Thread Easter Eggs

1.Blow up a balloon
2.Cover the entire balloon watered down glue (you may wish to use an old paintbrush)
3.Wrap crochet thread around the balloon in one direction, leaving small gaps about 1/2 inch wide so the balloon isn't completely covered
4.Apply another light layer of glue on top of the thread and wrap with another layer of crochet thread in different direction
5.Repeat several more times until the balloon is covered with thread.
6.Tie on a piece of thread to knot of balloon
7.Hang the balloon from the bottom thread to dry for about 24 hours.
8.Pop the balloon and gently pull it out

Argo is the name of the dry starch. Haven't seen it in years.
