    Employee discount?

    Never having worked in retail I do not know the norm,but I did presume that if an employee recd any kind of discount on in-house purchases, that discount was deducted from the cost at the time of purchase and employee paid the discounted price. Well,a friend was telling me about a relative of hers who recently got a job at a big box hardware store after being let go from lucrative employment elsewhere--another horror story----anyway, it was explained to this new employee that if anything was purchased from store, that cost would be deducted from their wages and be reflected as a deduction on the next paycheck. Is that a normal/ usual way of receiving an employee discount? It sounds sort of weird to me, but I have nothing to compare it too. Just wondering

    I worked in retail 20+ years and for several different companies. I imagine each company is different and has their own way of doing employee discounts. The companies I worked for gave us a choice of either paying for the items at the time of purchase or we could charge it to our account, meaning the purchase would be taken out of our next paycheck.

    Like I said just depends on company, and what their policy is.

    I always received the employee discount at time of purchase and the discount was plainly printed on my recipe.

    I haven't worked retail but my SIL has and she said it was deducted from her pay - seems extreme but maybe they want to discourage it. I would prefer to pay as I bought the item. I see at the grocery store they pay for it when they buy it.

    When I worked at Sears we paid the discounted price, however when I worked in a small local shop we were given the option of having it deducted from our paycheque. Most of us chose that option, as it meant you didn't have to waste time on your break going to get your wallet, you just signed your receipt and got a lump sum deducted. It worked great....I know... I did the payroll and in over 25 years most all employees chose that route.

    I haven't worked in retail since House of Fabric was bought by JAF. But we had a discount card that we just showed at the register for 25% additional off the subtotal before taxes. It is the only reason I worked part time while having a full time job as a computer operator.

    When i worked at a department store in 2006 during Christmas, you had to put your purchase on the house credit card. Every place itps different

    Thanks for the input on emp disc...I just thought that a strange practice. Imagining myself in a retail environment that was something I really liked could leave me with paying the employer to work there.....

    Where my son works he gets the discounted price and he pays right then. He can apply it to family members. He has been in the store for so long and know everyone that when my dh goes in and he mentions ds's name he gets a discount.

    I own a small retail store and our employees pay for their discounted items at the time of purchase... I could not imagine deducting from their pay check, it would be a hassle to do the math. LOL

    but as someone commented, maybe the company doing so is trying to discourage personal purchases or prevent the employee for taking discounts for others (family & friends) just a thought.
    attitude is everything...the rest will fall into place.

    Would discourage me from ever making a purchase. I usually need my paycheck.

    I've only worked retail jobs that did the discount at the time of purchase and then you paid.

    I would not like it done the other way.

    not all companies give employees discounts but do have certain ways handling purchases made from employees. Maybe this it their way of doing inventory control on what is purchased by employees. Some stores don't allow employeess to buy while at work. Your friend may not be getting a discount but just the way thier company handles employees purchases.

    Wow, having been in the tax world before having my own small business for 28 years and working part time in a fabric store - this causes the hairs on the back on my neck to stand up! The only way to deduct from the paycheck is after all 'regular' deductions are taken and then it would have to be COMPLETELY separate. If not, your end of the year totals would be all messed up and good luck figuring what applies and how much to your taxes. Also, it could mess up what is recorded to Social Security and to Disability. I would think their bookkeeping company would hate this. And, what is the point? Just give the discount at the POS like most companies.

    Most of the shops I worked at did the POS system. But there was 1 where we ran a tab & paid it on payday. I think the POS system is easiest for both "worker & boss".

    In the tax world, all the IRS cares about is the gross amount of pay and the taxes deducted. They could care less about anything else deducted. Your W-2 doesn't show any deductions but taxes.
