Default Fabric Amounts -

I will acquire "scraps" - either by having them given to me - or by buying them super inexpensively -

but

I can not bring myself to buy fat-eighths or precuts. I think they are annoying bits of fabric.

So - why do "scraps" not annoy me - in fact, I enjoy them - but precuts do?

I wash both of them before using them - so that is not part of the equation.

Perhaps because a scrap can be recut to,whatever you may need it for, but precuts are precut, you can recut, but limited choices of size, shape....or the fact that precuts are pinking shear cut, but one can cut scraps with a clean cut from rotary......another thought....scraps are already paid for, precuts need to be purchased........take your choice of reasons.....personally, I have and use both.......

Sometimes a new fabric line comes out and I just can't resist buying a fat quarter. Unfortunately they seem to be too pretty to use!

I've always found 1/3 yard is much more user friendly than fat quarters. Haven't ever bought any precuts so can't comment about that.

using scraps is a sign you can "make something out of nothing."

buying precuts only proves we are willing to spend waaaaaay too much on next to nothing.

and ... yes ... i have purchased precuts.
then usually kick myself. lol

I’ve only bought 3 jelly rolls. I loved the color combinations but didn’t care for working with them at all. I’d buy a Layer Cake someday because they seem more workable at least to me.

When I get "a bunch" of scraps - I can usually count on "being short" of something - but I don't expect to "have enough" - sometimes I do luck out and can squeak something out -

Precuts - my Mom gave me a a bunch of 5-inch squares many years ago - when they were still called "5-inch squares" - after washing and drying them - some of them reverted to their "woven" shape - and were smaller parallelgrams with not 90 degree corners.

I agree! Buy yardage, you never know what you can make with the "left-overs".

I will buy precuts if I find an excellent sale, so far only 5" squares. I've never found a jelly roll in my price range. Connecting Threads does not charge for cutting, so squares or strips are the same price as yardage. If I wanted a jelly roll, I'd look there first.
So far no one has given me scraps, but that is about to change. I'm getting my SIL's stash.

Scraps are like a fun bonus and it feels good to use them. I've used precuts mainly 5", when called for in a pattern. Not something I'm really drawn to. Although, one pattern I made called for a jelly roll and I would have used that if I could have found one. It would have given me a wider variety of colors than I was able get by buying yardage, quilt still turned out nice. It was a fabric line that I really loved.
