Check out Flylady's internet site. She has instructions there on what to keep handy for running out the door and not forgetting the baby!! Or medicines or cats or dogs or...

We have to do this BEFORE it is needed.

Grandfathers advice, was to always make sure your life fit in a carryon bag. He said the rest of the house was just for decoration. What you described makes me understand his meaning. I have often wondered What would I take.
That sounded very scary, Im glad you were able to go home.

We were evacuated this evening. A fire west of town came right up to the edge of town. I grabbed my jewelry & my MIL's jewelry, all the Mac minis my camera, & pictures off the walls. My DH grabbed his firearms our important papers. The cats were in my truck & the dogs were in his. Our DS had just loaded his truck up with lawn equipment because he was about to go & mow a lawn so thats what he took. After we arrived at our DIL's & other DS's house we realized that we didn't pack a change of clothes or any of our medication.:) After a couple of hours we were able to go back home!
glad you are safe...my aunt lives in Colorado City, so we know how scary it can be...sister is up in Ranger and we are headed there tomorrow..hope the fires subside soon....

Thanks guys! Ya'll are so comforting. The fires seem to be just getting started here. We are in a bad drought! No rain since Oct. (We are even on water rationing!) They say that if we don't get enough rain on the flood plains we'll be out of water by Jan. of 2013 Please keep us in your prayers!

I am glad to hear you, your family and your home are safe.
It would be very hard for me to have to decide what to take on such a short notice. I hope your area has rain soon.

I am glad you are all safe. We have a lot of fires where I live in Western Australia. I keep an "emergency" case - contains all important papers etc, plus a list of what else we might need in case of evacuation, (like medication and clean undies) and where to find it all.
