Game Gift Ideas for Christmas Party

We played a game where everyone brought in a wrapped white elephant and put it under the tree. The hostess typed up words from "The Night Before Christmas" and gave everyone a piece of paper with the word from the story on it. As she read the story, when your word came up you went up to the tree and got any present, or you could take a present (still wrapped) that someone else took. When the story was over, everyone unwrapped their present in turn. Then you could offer to trade with anyone else.

Maybe, hold an auction later with a common denominator such as: pennies, bag of candy canes doled out for cash, small wrapped boxes of undisclosed gift items as cash or actual cash, in a quilt group...some home cut fat quarters or a bag of yo yos or just precut fabric pieces....

We played a game where everyone brought a gift (men brought a man's gift, ladies brought a lady's gift). They were wrapped or in gift bags. Everyone placed their gift on a table. A basket was passed around and everyone drew 'their' number. Number #1 selected a gift and unwrapped it. Number #2 could select a gift or take the gift that person number 1 has. Number #3 has the same option of selecting a gift or taking the gift of #1 or #2....etc.
When everyone has had a turn person #1 has the final option of the remaining gift or of taking anyone's gift....remaining gift goes to the person without a gift.
Can get a little aggressive

An inexpensive, readily available gift that is good for both men and women is a challenge. Socks were a good idea. How about:
A mug
A bag of candy (has to be in a bag)
Items for a desk (pens, pencils, post-it notes, roll of tape, etc...give dimensions so that all items will fit within a small gift bag
Something in a can (might be able to get creative with that one)

You could have everyone bring a can of vegetables and then donate them to a food pantry when the evening is finished.
A $5 gift card would work too and not be too hard for everyone to get.
A pair of those stretchy gloves that one size really does fit most and only cost around $2 a pair.
Batteries...everyone can use a 4 pack of AA or AAA batteries at the holidays it seems.

My guild plays Christmas bingo, each making a block with 5 rows of colors in different patterns, (paisley, stripe, Christmas prints, etc) then we gather up the blocks and make a quilt for charity from them. We play the right/left gift exchange, too, reading "The Night Before Christmas" and changing directions each time "and" or "the" is read. We each bring an item for the bingo prizes, letting the winners have their choice of the items.

At our Quilt Christmas party, we are making Hexi mug rugs using Christmas fabric...3 of us making 8 each, so not too much for any one person. We will add a coffee or tea bag, and Dove Chocolate bar. One thing we did last year was a Christmas Carol Game. My daughter had us number 1-10 on a piece of paper. Then she sang the first few words of a Christmas Carol, and we had to write the names. Even though you know the carols, you don't always know the proper names! It was fun for everyone. This year we are repeating one item from a couple of years ago, and that is one of the older ladies reading the Christmas Story from Little House on the Prairie...and how thankful they were to get a candy cane and an orange. Makes us realize how materialistic we are, and all that we have to be thankful for. Yes...if you share your story, maybe our gifts will be given in that manor! Sounds fun...thanks much!

My family has been doing this for years with a wrapped ornament! All ages participate, even if that means sitting on Mom's lap and Mom juggles the baby and two bags! We do this no matter what, even when we cut back on gift giving, no one wanted to give this up. Our story is one of Mr. and Mrs. "Wright" where she is cooking and he runs "right" out to the store to shop! My 81 year old dad and 2 year old twins, niece and nephew, all in on the same game. We slow the story down for audience participation when need be!! So much fun!

Playing this game is a huge success with our friends. They are asking what they need to bring to participate in the game. This is where I need ideas! I need for the item to be inexpensive, generic (something that would work for a man or woman), and easy to find locally. Please let me know if you have a suggestion!!

I gave each participant a pencil and a piece of paper numbered 1 through 5. Each participant had to smell the melted candy and try to figure out what kind of candy bar it is, then list it on the paper. The person who guessed the most correctly got a little prize.
We also play the White Elephant Christmas gift exchange (except we bring something nice, not really White Elephant items).
