I don't participate in Black Friday or Cyber Monday as I have enough insanity without asking for more! I have a son who worked at Target for about four years and if you want, he'll tell you about the joys of working Black Friday, of the pushing, shoving, fights, and even one man who was waiting in line who went to his truck and came back with a gun. Yes, the man was arrested. But I am much more thoughtful of store employees who work through the holiday season. It is not fun, folks. And yes, I realize work isn't always fun, and many would love to have one of those jobs, but you don't know the full story of working retail during Christmas shopping season. My son had a total of four hours to spend with family on Christmas Eve, and that included driving for three of the four hours.

There were some stores in my area that opened Thanksgiving , in the evening! Personally I think its gotten out of hand. I happened to be up last year at 5 AM because my dog was needing to out... the neighborhood homes were light up ... cars going like it was rush hour ... I had never seen so much activity going on on my street at that hour EVER!!!
Sometimes I think the old "blue laws" where not so bad.

My granddaughter has to work Black Friday for the first time this year and is already freaking out. She works at Target and has to work 3 a.m. to 3 p.m. She works in the stock area, so will be really busy pulling large items for customers. She's mainly worried about doing her boss proud, since so much is riding on the bosses shoulders. She's an excellent employee and I am very proud of her!

She sounds like a gal with great work ethics! I hope all goes well for her that day!

I bet next year they will all be open on Thanksgiving. That will be awful for the employees.
Wal Mart is open on Thanksgiving. The employees all work a half day shift either morning or afternoon. That way everyone has time with their family. My DH was lucky to always be scheduled for the morning shift and was home before dinner was ready. :)

I'd rather go at midnight than 5 in the morning.

I go to one store, and not first thing when they open: JoAnns. All notions are 50% off and then use the extra 20% off coupon. I buy enough for the year. Wouldn't even attempt to go near the cutting counter.

Other than that, I avoid the stores like the plague. I think it has gotten out of hand. People don't seem to know what manners and common courtesy are any more. It just isn't fun. Many times, better deals can be had online. Luckily, I am almost done w/ my Christmas shopping already. Just need to wrap everything.

After many years of working in retail, I avoid the stores on black Friday. There are many online deals that are as good or better than what is in the store. Lots of times they offer free or cheap shipping too. The sales usually start a few days before Thanksgiving. I got some of my best deals on electronics stuff the day before and Thanksgiving day. I had an idea of what I was looking for prior to that, so I just watched the ads on the Black Friday Ads website and shopped when the sales came up. I didn't even need to gas up the car!

Neither I nor my mother shop on black Friday. Too many crazy people, and this year, I'll be working at a thrift store where I'm told their Black Friday means everything in the store is half off (not sure about furniture). And we already do that on Wednesdays for clothing so I can just imagine what black Friday will be like. And one lady that has worked there for a while said that it only gets really busy around 3 and later. And I start at 4. That's gonna be a fun night
