My sister's dog(a black lab) was mis-diagnosed with that...turned out he had a zinc deficiency...ask your vet about that...I guess it's more common in huskies, but other large breeds can have it, too...his nails grew back, but he will be on zinc pills for life.

her nails were too long. is the lab an inside dog? usually a dog that is kept inside doesn't naturally wear their nails down and they need trimmed a bit oftener. Is that a factor in the disease?

no...it's not from being an indoor dog at all...it's something about him not being able to absorb enough zinc, so he needs extra.

Do you have a reverse osmosis filter on your water? The dog AND your family need to get fluoride out of your diet! I don't think Pur or Brita filters filter out fluoride - it takes reverse osmosis.

Don't know if this was directed at me but our dog is an outside dog. We don't have a lot of asphalt, concrete, etc so her nails don't get worn down as much as one who is on concrete every day. The longer nails don't cause the disease but they can aggravate the pain of the nails lifting, because once they're loosened, any movement like walking could bother them.

What does a water filter have to do with it? I don't getit???
I know from growing orchids that reverse osmosis filters use a lot of salt, and can kill sensitive plants(like orchids!!)...so i just thought it was not good in the long run for people!
