Default Have you used odicoat to make fabric water resistant?

I'm getting ready to try it for the first time on a bag. Mainly for the wipeability. I'm not sure if I want to just coat the parts that are lighter colored or the black parts too. Has anyone used it? any tips?

There is also a clear vinyl that can be ironed onto the fabric.

I had never heard of this product. What a great idea! I think I would do the whole bag.

Do you put it on the fabric before or after sewing it together?

The problem with the iron on vinyl is that it makes crackly sounds every time you dig into your bag. I hate that.

I think most people put it on before. You can still iron but you have to put parchment paper in between the iron and the fabric. I've read where some people put it on after though.

Some people have made a DIY version by mixing pure silicone with water.

Can you tell us more about this product. I have never heard of it before and would like to know more. Is it primarily used on bags and totes or on other products an what kind of finish does it leave.

I think it is made by the people who make 505 spray. I have not used it, but I read that you need a few coats to make the fabric more water resistant.

Oh, it is brushed on, more coats = more shine, otherwise it has a satin finish.

It can be brushed on, or you can use a card (old gift card, credit card, etc) to apply it. It came with a little cardboard spatula. Once it's dry it's waterproof (obviously seams wouldn't be) and can be wiped clean, or it can be machine washed (but probably not machine dried). I think it's silicone based. It comes out of the jar very thick and gel-like. I did a test piece so I could see how my machine handles it and it was fine. I used a teflon foot and a titanium topstitch needle, although other needles would probably work fine. I used 3 coats and it's a little shiny, but not glossy. I'll probably only do 2 coats when I make the bag. Click here for the website for it.
