Hey, congratulations on getting into the school of your choice!
I had a hot pot when I was in the dorm. All it did was heat water. But we also had popcorn poppers. The school bookstore rented out dorm room refrigerators, but they cost as much per semester to rent as it would be to buy one.
The dorm had snack machines, and of course most midnight snacks don't require cooking or refrigeration, so you won't starve.
You may find when you get there that rules about microwaves and heating coils are not enforced, but wait until you get there and see what's what. Maybe they have a cooking area on each floor with a fridge and microwave so you won't need one in your room.
So have you registered for classes yet? What are you taking?

Not a crock pot, a hot water pot. Boils water for tea, instant oatmeal, ramen soups, instant soups. I sent one off with each of my girls when they went to college. I use mine here daily, usually several times a day for tea and when I need some boiling water quickly!!!

A hotpot looks something like a squat coffeepot. It has a built in hot plate type ring in the bottom(inside you don't see it) and most of them are made of crockery. It is similar to a Crock pot yet differant. They don't take a long time to heat like a crock pot does. They heat the same as a an electric burner. You can cook anything in them that you would in a pan on the electric stove.
I had one in college long ago. I don't know what they look like now but I imagine they are basically the same.

I have a light class load but it's still considered full time.
Spanish 101
World Religions of Chicago
English Comp. 105
Thats just the fall. I have a january term class that I have to take, and I register for that and spring in November.
My major is History.
I'm getting my own fridge, and a few of the dorm halls have a kitchenette either on each floor or in the main lounge of that particular dorm hall.
For things like this, I'm waiting till I get there or when I get my room assignment.
