I wouldn't cut into it myself as it is an old high chair, I would probably make a simple tray and attach it back on to those side dowel rods. have a draping plant on the seat and a standing plant on the tray. very nice piece.

I think I would take it somewhere and have it dipped.

A great find and it will make a nice stand for plants.

I bought the saddiest round table at the junk store. It was dull washed out brown. I started sanding it & found the most beautiful maghony wood underneath all the dull finish. I restained it & added a new finish & it is beautiful. I wouldn't cut that seat because they are usually pieced together & it may fall apart. Good luck.

Ditto.

Maybe you could get a clear sealer that's designed for decks. Any paint store would be happy to sell you something that would help it to tolerate weather. Sun and humidity will eventually take a toll, but meanwhile it's pretty as is and has nostalgic associations. I think of generations of little shoes scraping the finish off that footrest. It would be a shame to hide that. It almost certainly will have lead paint and will be safer if it's sealed.

One of the most charming things about this chair is the way the person who made it accidentally reversed one of the side back spindles, probably realizing it after he drilled the holes for both armrests.

I just love repurposing things. Quilters are great for that, we have been doing it for ages. Now we are going in to other forms.
