I am a registered user under a different name but wanted some anonymity for this question. If any one can help, pls PM me and I would be happy to take the discussion off board under my own identity.

I have a close family member who has been diagnosed with leukemia... Unfortunately they have no insurance and make just a tiny bit too much for medical assistance. I don't know where to tell them to turn. Doctors will not treat without paymment. They can barely pay bills and buy food. Does anyone have any advice?

Thanks so much.

At M. D. Anderson in Houston they have a special program for people who can't afford to pay. It is a teaching hospital and state supported so they must have help available for whoever needs it. Maybe there is something like that in Georgia.

I should have said M.D. Anderson Cancer Center

God Bless, I hope you find the answers you are looking for. We were in a position many years ago with a son having a chronic condition and insurance paid very little. We made $1 more than the limit for assistance. It can be very trying. All I ask is that you keep reaching out. There are answers and there is help. Sometimes it just takes an awful lot of digging to find it.

If past military, check with VA. I have a friend that was in Vietnam and they pay for everthing associated with his cancer.

Discuss with Social services a spend down amount sometime is it very little to get medicaid. If they have a lot of assets they may need to sell them off campers, boats and extra cars.

Check out the laws of the state, our county hospital cannot turn people away.

Is there community action program or a community health center in there. you should also have a hospital in the area that provides uncompensated care. You have to request an application for uncompensated care. Also the health dept should be able to direct you to any programs with funding. Have you contacted the local chapter of leukemia society for help.

If this member is a child they can go to St. Jude in Memphis, which specializes in children's cancer. There is no charge to the family.
