Elias Howe, (born in Massachusetts) was less than 30 years old when he perfected what is thought of as the modern sewing machine with the eye of the needle at the pointed end.

I sure am glad he did. I wonder if he had a wife that quilted and that was his inspiration. lol

Had a mom who was tired of hand sewing and mending. The sewing machine was her idea. Remember this was the "dark ages" when women were supposed to be in the kitchen.

I remember my mother talking about her mom getting a sewing machine. It was such a miracle for her because she had 6 children and her husband and herself to clothe and she made most everything! Plus the heavy winter quilts which were made from the boys old woolen pants. The sewing machine certainly has been a blessing. I thank God for mine every time I go to my sewing room.
