First, I try to picture the finished product in my mind. Second, I pick out a fabric that will compliment the piece or coordinate with it. Then I cut my material twice as large as the opening I am covering. I then start with a circle of fabric and begin stitching (by hand) around the edge of the circle. When I get it 7/8 of the way stitched up, I put my poly fil in it. When it is almost stitched together and before I put the polyfil in it, I gather it into almost a pouch. I stuff it until the pouch is full and then I complete the stitch and pull up tight until the opening that was gathered is about the size of a half dollar. If the polyfil does not want to stay in, I pull my thread across the bottom making a little "net" to secure the polyfil into it. Would love for you to post a picture of your pin cakes. It might give me another idea. Thanks for the kind words.

Your pin cushions are beautiful. I am going to make some as Christmas presents, but could you tell me if you just may a pin cushion and pushed into the container and then glued it. Is that what you did? Thanks

First, I cut out the material about twice as large as the opening in the knick knack. The I stitch around it (by hand) like you would a yo-yo. When I get the last stitch done, I gather it up half way and then stuff it with polyfil. Then gather it
to where the opening is about the size of between 1/2 dollar & a quarter. Then I glue it to the opening and decorate it.
Thank you for the kind words ladies.

I took a circle of Sturdy cardboard about 5 1/2" around. I covered it like you would a do a large yo-yo with the gathered opening about 1/2 dollar in size. Finish off securely. Your material should look like it has small folds in it around the gathered opening. The cardboard you just covered should be very sturdy. Then I take a can the size of a Fancy Feast cat food can (washed LOL) and stuff the opening with polyfil. It should mound up above the can. Then cover the can completely and gather it in the center of the bottom of the can. When gathering, do not fold the fabric like you were doing a hem as this makes the gather too thick. Gather a single raw edge thickness. Then heavily hot glue the bottom of the can to the area that you gathered around the disc. I also do a good secure stitch closely around the bottom of the can, stitching it to the top of the disc. Make sure you stitch close to the can so the stitches can be covered up with your decorations. You can also offset the opening around the disc and the bottom of the can to do an old timey hat where the rim of the hat was smaller on one edge than it was on the other. Hope this answers your questions.
