For general use I buy the towels from the automotive section. A roll of 12 is around $6 here. Just white, square towels. We use them at the restaurant I work at too. They hold up well and are absorbent.

Another suggestion, if available to you...a restaurant supply store. Like the auto shop towels that willis.debra mentions above. Not sure about any price difference between a restaurant supply shop and auto shop but I think from the restaurant supply they are a tad thinner than the shop towels. They are easier for my smaller hands to work with.

I got some good kitchen towels from Kohls, on sale and w/ a coupon. Thick and last a long time.

My son has a window washing service and he turned me on to the towels from the dollar store. They are not fancy, not large but do the job. The are usually sold by the auto supplies. All are white and a terry material.

I use what is called a "bar towel". Bartenders use this type to dry glasses and wipe counter. They come in a package of ??? (can't remember) and they are white with a blue stripe near each end.

I fancy up those ugly bar towels with trims and embroidery. everyone loves them. I bought the fabulous towels, they stunk at drying, cost a bit too.

I use bar towels as well. I get them at Kohl's, 4 for $10. I stock up when I have a 30% off coupon. They also make nice burp rags for babies. Just stitch a cute baby fabric down the middle on one side.

I use what are called bar towels. They are sold in restaurant supply stores and I purchased mine at Sams. They are with baking and kitchen utensils. They are great and absorbent.

Kitchen towels are always on my Christmas and Birthday wish list that as a family we exchange for gift ideas. I usually get some nice towels as people generally spend a bit more to buy a nice present. I'm not talking about $60 towels. That's outrageous.

This is what I do. Look in your thrift shop for some old bath towels if you don't have any at home. Also, you can cut them down further to make dish cloths.

I use the terry ones for drying hands, and have a cotton flour sack type for drying dishes (which I rarely do). DH is under strict orders NOT to use it for anything else! If I am going to wipe dishes I want to know it is clean.
