According to the product info you can use color catchers - you just need a mesh delicates bag and put them to the back of the washer before you put in the rest of the load. The site does not explain why - but I guess I would follow these guidelines as it is easier than a machine repair. Hope this is helpful!! http://www.kmart.com/shc/s/p_10151_1...0000041395611P
