Default Looking to upgrade my sewing machine

I've been thinking about upgrading from my boring Kenmore 385.17324 (not very many stitch options).
I've found a Singer Quantum 9960 new in box for $400 and a Janome Skyline S5 new in box for $800. I don't know much about either machine other than the specs I found online and I've read both good and bad reviews on the Singer. I sew a variety of things....quilts, bags, kid items etc. Does anyone here have either of these machines?

The Singers of today are not the Singers of our mothers/grandmothers. Janomes are well loved by many. My vote is for the Janome even if it twice the price.

My vote is also for the Janome, the only Singer I would buy is a vintage one.

I would take the Janome any day of today's Singers. I have a Janome that is now 40 years old and works like it is close to brand new and is a work horse. I also have a (Janome) New Home Serger and it to is getting up in years and works great. Janome is a product that you will like I am sure and worth the extra money.

Old Singers are wonderful. I've yet to hear anything good about the new ones. What a shame.

In November when I was looking for a travelling machine (smaller than my 27 pound daily sewer) I was looking at two different make/models at the local dealer who sells several brands. As I was waffling between the Singer and the Janome, a different sales clerk than the original one I had been talking with came by (the original clerk had left me at my request while I was trying out the machines to see if using them would help with my decision). The second clerk asked if she could help me, I told her what I was doing, and she said - I'd be buying the Janome if it was my money - a much better machine for the price. As I already have owned a few Janomes and currently have an Elna (sister company now) - I made the decision to go with the Janome and have not been disappointed. I must admit that I had been leaning towards the Janome before the clerk said anything. I feel like she had nothing to lose in giving her opinion, if I bought a machine there the store would get the sale either way....
