I learned a lesson in the 90s. It is hard to make a vest for a large women without knowing where to put the darts!

Also make sure that the garment is cut "adequately" - so that it hangs gracefully off one's shoulders and does not pull or bind on the way down to the hemline.

It does pay to measure one's body to see what the circumferences are at various points. No need to sew a size label into the vest if one is going to keep it for oneself.

Try to find something with princess seams instead of darts. Much easier in my opinion.
