The mice need to be alive because the snake is attracted to the movement. snakes are deaf, but they can sense movement(vibrations in the air) with their tongues and their eyes and they can feel the warmth of a live mammal. we had ball pythons for years. they are surprisingly good pets, and if handled well and often they are very interesting. mine went to pre-schools and bookstores for visits and even spent a few years in highschool. our remaining snake lives with my son and is about 24 yrs old.

The idea of snakes is fascinating to me - but so far I've been too squeamish to get up close and personal with any of them.

I have 4 cats that enjoy the show here also. I remove the snakes from the tank to a "feeding" tub. It sits on the floor so I don't have to pull up chairs. lol they line up; the lg guy is over 6ft long so he gets a rat and the 4 ft fella is still on lg mice. what kind of snake do you have. we have ball python. the big guy loves being held and wrapping himself around ya and the smaller guy is a bit snippy if he doesn't get fed in time.

EEEW!! I won't even go to the reptile area at the zoo. No way it would happen in our house. When my husband was in the Navy he wanted me to meet him in Guam, and someone told me about there are geckos everywhere to keep the bug population in check. So needless to say, I stayed in San Diego.

I think its cool that my cats are not the only ones that get a show! Maybe this is a common thing for all people that own snakes and cats!
My snake is a Rosy Boa. She is about 13 yrs old and about 3 1/2 ft long. Rosy boas have a very mild temperament, she has never struck at or bitten anyone in all the years we have had her, and thats a good thing. My Hubby doesn't really like snakes, and would probably make me get rid of her if she was the least bit aggressive. When we hold her, she prefers to go down your shirt and snuggle up there.
