If you are unsure what features you might use/want, then the best thing is start reading machine reviews on the internet, but most of all go to different dealers and try different ones. All have 1 or 2 things different feature wise and you will get a better feel what you like. Needle up/down, auto threading, fancy stitches, ability to drop feed dogs, knee lever, auto cut, just to name a few.

Your hubby is definitely a smart man! I use the Bernina I had a Kenmore as well but it didn't keep up with the demand of sewing by me. Our LQS had let me test drive the Bernina while I was taking my classes there so it was an easy decision on which one to switch to, let us know how it goes.

I like Janome, Kenmore and Brother but that doesn't mean you won't also like Bernina, Viking, Pfaff, Singer, etc. - so go to several dealers and sit down and try them all, you'll find you love some, hate some, and are indifferent towards others.
I'd post a new thread and ask members what they can't live without on their machines. For me it would be the needle threader and the multiple needle positions.
Also, be sure the dealer you buy your machine from provides you with free classes to learn how to use it and utilize all it's features.
