Our local fly fishers club had a fly tying contest. Just to be a good sport, I entered two flies. Who'd'a thunk it? I won the salmon fly category with

That's really nice. I have tied so many flies I've lost count!! Never entered any contests but at one time I probably could have.
Seems like over the years I have tried so many things. Usually once I get good at something like that, I start to lose interest in it. Quilting is the only thing I have stayed with!!

What a neat hobby. As far a flies go that is one of the prettier ones I have seen. And it doesn't land on the picnic food. :P

The very best part of the whole contest was my 16 year old winning the best of show. It was a good night for us, not so good for the good-ol'-boys!

Here's his. Personally, I think it's exquisite, but then I'm biased... ;)

I sort of had a bone to pick with the guy who ran the contest. Last year I won the people's choice with my "Bar Fly" (maybe I'll post a pic of that later), but anyway, he seemed somewhat offended by it, and made it virtually impossible to enter anything even remotely creative.

I even volunteered to be on the committee in order to come up with some categories for people to enter. I was thinking something like a "reclaimed" category wherein tiers had to make something using 3 things with a previous use or life, unrelated to fly fishing. At least he listened to the uproar of not having any kids' categories. (My son coached a kindergartener to win his age class as well, who also won the people's choice, but that's another story). Needless to say, the one man committee didn't want to have anything to do with that, so he did it his own way.

Sooooooo, short story long, I tied one "creative" fly complete with a write up that he wouldn't let the judges look at, nor the public. But to be able to show that my "serious" fly won was pretty cool to me.

Here's my "creative" Lucifer's Deceiver. For when good old fashioned skill and luck won't work...

WOW!!
Those are awesome!
I've always wanted to learn how to fly fish. My dad used to, but would never take us kids. Guess he thought it was too dangerous for us or something.
