My mother bought 2 potholders at a show, they only have one layer of InsulBright - I was afraid to use them at first but now I love them. I would not use them to set a hot pot on the stove since there wouldn't be much space between the pot and table - but it woulds lifting lids and holding onto the pot to stir. I was thinking about making a couple more because they take up let space in the drawer.

Wish I'd seen this discussion a couple weeks ago. I just finished a batch of potholders for my daughters new house. I decided to use a layer of insulbrite with one layer of cotton batting. Warm and Natural I think, based on the instructions for an oven mitt on the product instructions. Guess I'll call her and ask for feedback on how they are working out for her!

I like to use 1 layer insulbrite & 2 layers of 100% cotton batting. I have made them with the insulbrite & just 1 layer of cotton batting & they are fine but you don't want to hold onto the dish coming out of the oven for very long. I have never been burned though from any of them I made.

If you want real protection you will need a thick pad of cotton. Polyester does not insulate against high heat I use pieces of an old mattress pad Quilted cotton. I have read where women have used pieces of old terry cloth towels.

I use 1 layer of Insulbrite and 2 layers of thick batting. Some of my older customers have arthritis in hands, they say my potholders are too thick. So I buy the solid colors from dollar stores, applique on them, the ladies like them and buy-always like to have an option.
