I just tell them immediately that my husband has been laid off of his job and we can't help them. They could help us.

Marsye you need to start a thread with some stories of what you've told these people. I bet it would be hysterical!

I don't get many solicitor calls during dinner, but if I did, I would ask if they could hold on and then go eat my dinner. They'll get the message and hang up eventually.

Just because the phone rings doesn't mean that you have to answer. Let it go to the answering machine.

My mom used a whistle on them. They would call and call. Finally when they would call again, she would tell them to "hold on" while she got something to write with. She would get the whistle and blow it as loud as she could. After getting their eardrums blown out a bit, they would get the message.

We have a silent number, no listing in phone books etc., costs a very small amount, but is sooooooo worth it. Also if I enter competitions or buy products etc. I give my mobile phone number, and the answering machine takes care of things when I decide I'm having a "phone free" day.
