American Girl Doll clothes

6 Attachment(s)
My DGD recieved and American Gril doll for Christmas. She was very excited but said "Grandma, I don't have any clothes for her". She asked for dresses and that started me sewing. Using odds and ends of trimmings and scrap fabric, these are some fo the dresses I have made for her doll. One dress is red, white and blue because every American girl should have a red, white and blue dress..especially in an election year. She will need the black cape for the cold Iowa winter. There are even openings for her hands. I have enjoyed this project and my DGD has loved to help chose the fabrics and styles of the dresses. She is 8 and we are having a great time.

Darling clothes! You do lovely work! :)

jillnjo 01-08-2012 10:49 AM

All are adorable!! Easy to make, too. My daughter makes and sells them at craft shows.

Cute! You did a very nice job. I like the fabrics you picked.

madelinkk 01-08-2012 10:54 AM

Love them!

Nice work...I really like that you use trim...it really finishes the dress.

My 4 (soon to be 5) DGD got an AG doll for Christmas, too. When she last came to visit, we spent hours looking at patterns on line and ready made clothes. I printed a pattern from a website. I only had time to make a top while she was here...because I had to "redesign" it as I made it because "Miss Picky" didn't like the way it fit! LOL We picked out a fabric to make a nightgown and she asks "do you have it made yet?". So I've got to get busy before she comes again!!

Love your clothes. That little red dot dress is so retro!!

I would have given my right arm for those clothes for my dolls when I was a child. They are fantastic.

Celeste 01-08-2012 01:32 PM

They are adorable! Lucky granddaughter.

When my daughter was 11, I strarted making outfits for her AG. One year I made matching dresses for her & her doll. Good memories, but, OMG, putting those tiny cuffs & other details was tricky. Your dresses are lovely, & what a way to invest time with your granddaughter!Bravo!

You are good! Your work is professional. Very good

Stitchnripper 01-08-2012 03:30 PM

Those are fabulous. Did you use a pattern or design them yourself? When I was a little girl I had one of those tiny Ginny Dolls and my Aunt made her an entire wardrobe on a treadle machine. Even lined the coats, so I just know your granddaughter is loving these dresses and such.

Sew cute-sew much fun!

Thank you!! I found several patterns for the clothes on line for free. I simple googled "free American girl doll clothes patterns" and came up with lots of free patterns. These are the ones my DGD chose herself and she also chose the fabrics. I am just the seamstress. We have been having fun picking out everything. I have much more to make because she wants a well dressed doll! We are not only making dool clothes, we are making memories.

these sure are sweet, want to do a few for my GD also.

My DGD got an American Girl doll for her birthday in the fall. Guess I need to get busy and make her clothes too. Just need to find a pattern when I'm at Joann's next time. Have tons of scraps so that won't be a problem. Thanks for the inspiration.

MadP 01-09-2012 04:12 AM

Very nice.

Those are so cute. I love looking at doll clothes and remember making them with my older sisters, mom and grandma. Here's a link to some free patterns if you'd like to have it.

Those are beautiful.

DonnaC 01-09-2012 06:11 AM

The clothes are just beautiful! I love sewing doll clothes, they sew up fast and they always fit (unlike the clothes I sew for myself sometimes!).

QuiltnNan 01-09-2012 06:39 AM

beautiful clothes. that red/white/blue is especially gorgeous. what a lucky girl to have a grandma with your talent

Granny Quilter 01-09-2012 06:57 AM

Making doll clothes is so much fun. I have only grandsons. I made Barbi doll clothes for little girls, but my last attemt wshowed that my old arthritic hands can't do it any more. American girl doll is bigger, wish I had a grand daughter or great grand to make them for!

Wintersewer 01-09-2012 07:16 AM

Those are great....you are very talented.

VickyOH 01-09-2012 07:25 AM

Are you planning on making any matching outfit for GD and doll? I sure hope I get a granddaughter someday! I have lots of patterns saved for the American Doll Girls.

Diannia 01-09-2012 07:46 AM

Very Cute! AG clothes are on my "to do" list!

Good for you!

Very sweet! My 11-year-old granddaughter got a sewing machine for Christmas. Last week, I helped her make a nightshirt for herself, but I found some cute 18" doll patterns and that will be the next project. (She told her Dad that she made the nightshirt all by herself. She was so proud of the outcome!)

My son and granddaughter were enroute to deliver our new windows. My DGD called on the cell phone and said, "We're holding the windows for ransom". Me: "What's the ransom?" DGD: "That you make me a dress for my AG doll". Me: "OK, and you can help me". She picked out the fabric and lace and got a new dress and panties for her doll. Then she said, "I need PJ's, a day dress, a coat, hat, shoes, socks, purse......and a wardrobe closet to put them in". They sure can dream, can't they? Now a second DGD got an AG doll for Christmas, so I will be busy sewing doll dresses. They are much smaller than the baptismal gown I just made out of a friends 1st Communion dress!!

When my niece got one of these dolls I made a lot of clothes for her. I loved doing it as I have a son and grandson so no doll sewing there. Sewing doll clothes at age 11 is how I got started sewing.

sandypants 01-09-2012 11:06 AM

Wow, those are so cute. I hope you enjoyed making them. Last year I did lots and lots of AMG clothes for friends. I loved sewing them and they aren't as hard as Barbie. I hope to get some more orders, as I have lots of Fabric around. Image that!!!!

crtwelvecats 01-09-2012 04:26 PM

My grand daughter is just starting to sew. I have a pattern for some of these dresses, also. Better get started as she asked this weekend about them. You did a wonderful job on them. Very colorful.

Rosewood9 01-09-2012 06:44 PM

How adorable. You did an wonderful job!

ChrisB 01-09-2012 06:53 PM

Such a lucky little girl to have a good grandma like you. The clothes are beautiful.

carolynjo 01-09-2012 07:34 PM

I was going to say that now you need to make her a victorian night gown and her dolly one to match! Make sure she saves it for her daughter. My 3 grandgirls each have their own gowns and their dolls' gowns as well.
