This is to all those who chose to comment on my previous topic of "Using Sheets for Backing". It was not my intent to criticize/judge/belittle etc. when I posted it and if it was taken that way...well, you have my utmost apology, what more can I say. I merely was stating my preference and wondered why some preferred to use sheets. I never expected to get a major butt chewing like I got. Needless to say, I won't ever post anything again.
Please don't take it personally. Some people on this board tend to believe they have the right to criticize people's personal opinions.
Just ignore the snide comments. There are far more good people on here. |
I didn't take your post negatively at all. I suspect that everyone has their preferences, and have learn a lot on the board about what people do and don't like.
Since joining this board I have learned so much from all of you.I take on board all the hints tips and opinions and learn from them. Please do not stop posting on the board you have plenty quilting exprience to pass on to others like me
Please please do not stop posting. It is sometimes difficult to share our words here in type form and have them be received at the other end with the intended thought and purpose. As long you stated it was YOUR preference that is enough. Sometimes readers miss certain key words of the discussion. I am not offended by any of the postings as I take them all as each person's opinion of which they are entitled to have. Again, please do not stop posting to our board. I want you to stay around and post whatever whenever.

never apologise for making a statement, we still have free speech dont we? My Great greatmother, grandmother, mom all used a sheet for a backing, i use one too.
I know I said I wouldn't post again, but jljack, rusty quilter and rutthy...thank you so much for the kind words. I was devastated when I read all of those negative things.
There are times I suspect that we type (or speak) faster than we realize. Being human...it is one of those things we all have to overlook. Keep quilting and keep posting--we all love to quilt and love to learn.

Thank you for your posts! This is a place where we can learn from each other and share our thoughts and ideas... Just smile and keep posting! lol
Please don't stop posting and don't stop posting a new topic. I asked a mod to remove a topic I started. It was causing so much negativeness that I didn't like. This was not my intent. The more I tried to explain what I meant, the nastier the comments became.
I agree, everyone has their own preference. And I believe there are way more of us positive people here than negative people. |
Everyone has choices and opinions that may or may not be like yours. But this is what makes the world go around. Wouldn't it be a boring place to live if we all had the same opinions and made the same choices.
Sorry you feel that way, missed it the first time around went back and read when saw this post... Thats the Beauty of this board, we are all able to have opinions, not afraid to share the experiences, these topics may or maynot change ones mind about how they choose to Quilt, and many times give other outlooks on how it can be done, so many levels of quilter here all outlooks are welcome....
Yes a few things get deleted, but that's mods choice if it steps too far over the line. Reasons for this are solid. We've all been on that end of someones teeth :) ... Happens when people are passionate about a topic, I look at it as a good thing, that there are people who still hold a long, beautiful craft, and are still willing to share the experience. JMO Happy Quilting and Posting !! :) |

It happens. You can say something you feel is innocent enough and it can take on a life of its own. I didn't post on the original topic because I don't have experience with sheets, and poly vs cotton thread is one of those topics where there will never be a meeting of the minds.
I am sorry for what has happened for you. You just never know... |
I use sheets all the time and if people do not like it too bad! I am not making heirloom quilts but if they ;last that long so be it! I want mine used!! I also use poly blends! Shame on me but I have some on my bed from many years ago and they are holding up well. Post what you like you will sometimes get negative comments but who cares it is your quilt!
thats right cant we all just learn from one another. Quilting is going to be around long after we are all gone.
I read your post, but must admit I didn't follow the whole thread. I hate it that you got your feelings hurt. I doubt that was anyone's intention, just as hurting their feelings was not your intention. Stay with us and have fun. Enjoy what you like, give your opinions (you're entitled) and ignore what you don't like.
I read the whole thread and did not see anything offensive unless being able to use poly thread and using sheets as some budgets (mine) only allow were offensive to you. Please feel free to quilt the way you prefer. My grandkids can wear a good quilt out in a years time I have had others longer with no problems. I do use both cotton and poly
i'm so sorry this has happened to you. like any forum it can be a bit rough around here.
Never apologize for YOUR opinion.
Please do not stop posting! Your post was fine. It was others who blew things a bit out of proportion but I have seen much worse. It's usually really great around here and if it gets too out of hand we have wonderful moderators who rein it in. You're just fine.....welcome to the board (I'm probably late with that)and keep posting!
P.S. I don't use sheets either. I use 90" 100% Permanent Press muslin from.....drum roll please......WALMART! It is sooo soft when it is washed! LOL! |
Those two posts make me wonder just how unhappy they must be with themselves. I feel so bad for those people, not only are they unhappy, but do not have the confidence the give constructive criticism.
Don't stop posting or talking to us! I just went to thrift store and bought some pretty heets to use for backing!!!
You weren't rude at all. You discussed it in a pleasant manner, and you didn't deserve some of the comments you got. I don't post more because of this kind of thing, and it's a shame.
I don't remember the original post and didn't go back to read it, but if it works for you that's all that matters. Not everyone has the same budget for their hobby and it should be about the creation and process not so much the supplies used. I haven't used sheets just because I've heard that the thread count can make them difficult to quilt etc. and I've got enough troubles <VBG> without causing myself more LOL. Look at what the truly heirloom quilts were made from ... whatever was at hand. Please don't stop posting.

You were right to express your opinion. You are kind to apologize. Don't stop posting, I found your post interesting.
I didn't respond to your original post but did comment to my daughter that it is so hard to "hear" how people are saying things when all we see is the printed word. I knew when I read your post that it was stating your viewpoint, not critizing, but I also figured you would get some negative feedback. What each of us choose to use for quilting purposes is individual, neither right or wrong and is dictated by many things. Keep posting and responding--and you have nothing to apologize for.
Echo - please don't quit posting because a few people think they can speak for the majority. EVERYONE IS ENTITLED TO THEIR OPINION!!!!! And I think your post was a very honest post with your opinions and I, for one, feel like you were just stating your opinion and asking what others opinions were. You have too much to add to this community to let a few people push you out! There are more of us that want you to stay than those who posted negativly on the other post!
For my personal opinion, I have only made a few full size quilts and have used sheets for all of them. They were 100% cotton sheets and I purchased them from a linen outlet where the original price was way over $50 for a King flat sheet and I paid $9.99. I washed it one time before using and because it was a quality sheet, it was so soft and wonderful to work with. My niece loved hers and especially the back because it was so soft! So, in closing - as my grandmothers both used to tell me: 1. TO EACH HIS OWN 2. IF YOU DON'T HAVE SOMETHING NICE TO SAY, DON'T SAY IT!!!! |
Hi, echo--do not let the Quilt Police put you off! they have no statutory power to arrest you :>), so do not let it get to you!
By the way, I use poly thread too--AND as I said in my earlier post sheets for back, and BLANKETS instead of batting--horrors!!!!!! The budget dictates what I use, and 160 + quilts and tops for charities in the last 4 or 5 years is much more important than silly "rules" someone comes up with! You owe NO ONE an apology! though they might owe you one! |
echo please don't go....lets all just move past this and get back to what we all like to do best....sew and chit chat...we all have a right to our opinions but sometimes us humans read more into it than we should, hence the hurt feelings...we all make mistakes, lets all give echo a hug so she will stay with us...
((((HUGS))) |
Remember our ancestors, they used what they had. Were they wrong?
Big Hugs, Echo! (((HUGS))) I learned a lot from the thread you started. I kind of skip over posts that are snippy or defensive. I had heard of people using sheets for backing but had not thought to try it myself. Now I know why some like to use them and some don't. I always like to pick each fabric (including backing) for my quilts, but I like to make patch quilts and string quilts and will consider using sheets to back those... So, here's one who learned a lot from the thread....
Don't stop posting. If you haven't figured it out, in all the posts I read, half the people think one way and half the people think another. That goes for quilting suggestions, to block suggestions, border suggestion. Everyone thinks there opinions is the correct way to go.
hugs, echobluff! I had read the first part of the other thread. It was an interesting discussion & covered several points to think about. I'm glad you started that thread.
I just went & read the whole thing. Comments may have got just a tad too teechish, but it did not look to me like you got chewed up too bad. ;) I hope you stay on & keep posting. I'm sensitive myself, so I do understand! Everyone's opinion is worth something. The various points of view & experiences of each of us brings value to the DB. |
So sorry that you had a negative experience on the board ... it is the exception rather than the rule.
Please don't take it personally, I didn't it as criticizing.
Don't take it personally! Everyone has their opinions and some may seem to be critical but probably don't mean to be and those that do mean to be can be ignored. There are many, many kind and wonderful ladies and men on this board, give them all another chance. They are all so very helpful! You will really love it here!

I just read it as 'your opinion' and there is nothing wrong with that. I never thought of using sheets and I don't know if I will. But I definitively do not like people who critisize you ( and in a rude way) because you wrote how you think about it.
As far as I know we all have a right to make up our own minds and I saw nowhere that you put others down. Just keep posting please, don't let your fun be spoiled by a few. |
