I was stupid and downloaded an anti virus program that turned out to be a virus and now my comp is totally locked up.
I was getting pop up windows and I tried to find the installation to uninstall and there wasn't one. Then I got a black screen and my comp system said it was closing down to protect the comp from a virus. It said to close down my comp and restart so now I have no comp. I am so very afraid I have lost everything, My daughter keeps saying she will take time to show me how to make backup discs but never have. So here I sit with all my files gone probably. Any ideas? |

There is one out that that acts like a virus to scare you into downloading it . pops up with multiple windows and scans showing all different "bad" things on your computer . Wish i could think of the name , because I bet it is in your software add/remove list and if you removed it you would be ok. have you scanned the add/remove software list and looked for a program that was just ran on the day that this happened ?

Will it let you restart at all? If so, download
Spybot Search and Destroy at http://www.Safer-networking.org/ and Malware at http://www.malwarebytes.org/ these will remove the virus and they are free. When I ran them on my pc after contracting a virus it said I had 411 infected files! They fixed them all. If it won't let you start up at all, you'll have to take it in to a computer guru and get it fixed or replace it. It'll cost about the same thing either way. I'm sorry :-( |
Rhonda, if you got that fake video type virus thingy from Facebook, what I finally was able to do was do a 'system restore' on my computer, and set it back to the previous Thursday.
If you're able to get it running again, maybe this will work for you? And if it was you, (and not the virus thingy sending out another fake message), asking 'how could I do that' - it wasn't me! - I got it too! And I even have an active anti-virus program running! I hope you get it figured out soon!! |
Same thing happened to me last week it lasted for about 4 days all I did was kept closing the pop up windows which was about every 3 minutes. All the icons at the bottom of my computer were different. I didn't do anything to try and fix it because I didn't know what to do and the way it come it went. My computer is fine now. This is the 3rd thread on the board with the same computer problem. I wonder what is going on.

try to get the computer up... and then go and down load Malware Bytes (the free version) and run that a couple of times. It should get it the first time... but the next couple of times allows you to be sure you got everything!

Yes, thanks to Purplemem, I used the link she provided for malware, and it found 12 whatevers!! I thought my computer was fine, after I did the system restore!
Thanks Alu_Rathbone, for seconding her advice! The two, which were repeated, that the malware found on mine were: Rogue.TotalPCDefender2010 and worm.koobFace I have no idea if they're trojan viruses or not. |

worm.koobFace is a worm/trojan that you got off facebook. Someone sent you a link with a video, when you clicked the link it embedded the worm into your computer and hijacked your address book. Then it sent the same virus the same way to everyone else. Do not open any attachments. They often have embedded viruses.
You are very welcome. |

Yeah QC I was a mess when I first realized it was a virus and I might lose everything! If and when I get it fixed I am going to figure out how to save my stuff!! I am just glad it didn't infect my laptop. I did have some shared files but they are not on here (laptop) now so that is ok.
I went online on the laptop and found some ideas but I can't get beyond the start up. No windows what soever. I reboot and I get a security window(my grandson put that on and didn't know how to take it off so I live with it! LOL) and I click ok to unlock it and then I get the screensaver and the symbol or wait whatever you call that thing with the sand(can't remember!) and after a few minutes then I get this window that covers the whole screen, It is a fake scan. Virus Protector new age of antivirus software. It sent the virus to my DD also and hers is XP software tool 2010. I guess it has several names but is the same virus. I just hope and pray I can get it off without losing anything. Everything I saw online suggested downloading and I can't get on to do that. One guy started a new user and got rid of it that way. But I can't access anything. edit: LOL I just remembered it is called an hourglass! Duh!! |

We have to go to the VA tomarrow so I will take it with me and stop at Best Buy tomarrow and see if they can fix it for me. Was going to go buy fabric but oh well!! |
If you lived closer I'd point you in the direction of my friend... If it comes down to it take it to Geek Squad... (best buy) and I'd use that as a last resort... only due to the price... They wanted to charge us over a 100 dollars to clean our computer of dust and to put in a RAM card that we just spent over 60 dollars on... We took it to my sisters friends brother who put it in for free and cleaned it.

As the computer boots up you should be able top start hitting the F? ( I know big help :? ) key to get it into safe mode . Maybe someone else here will know which key it is, but as the computer starts you just keep tapping the key until it goes into safe mode. So even if the computer doesn't start fully you can get that. The other thing to try is do you have the restore disks for the computer ?

That sucks! I hope everything is fixable!

If you can manage to download www.malwarebytes.com that might help. I had the same problem a few months ago. I managed (in between all the pop-ups) to run it, and it cleared up 57 problems. Good luck!

Spyware won't keep a virus off your computer. It has to be a virus protection program. One of the better ones is free to download and you can set it to up date everyday. And it has email virus checking before you open the email. http://free.avg.com/us-en/download
Also you can't have two virus programs on the same computer, they will mess you up. You can have as many spryware programs as you want with no problems. There are many free fix it programs to clean out your registry and put your computer back in order. The only place I trust for free programs is Kim Komando's website. |

a few months ago I got some kind of worm/trojan/virus. It wouldn't let me access any of my security devises. I had to take it to the Geek~only cost me $60~and he downloaded both Spybot and Malware~the free versions~ and I run them once a week and I've had no more problem. I'm glad I got off of FaceBook. I think certain bad guys use it to spread their venom.

I just went through this not long ago!!! It played games with my computer that almost sent me crazy! Called my cable company and got connected with the Anti-virus supplier. I have Comcast, so they connected me with Norton and I don't remember what we did, but it was a pretty easy fix. See if your cable company can assist you with this. I thought I was losing everything!!! Couldn't access stuff, very frustrating!!! Norton did assist me with this though.
Good Luck!!! |

OK, so I opened my laptop to call Kaspersky back as I did not receive the email and my computer seems to be OK; what gives? I'm sure it did not fix itself

I had these pop up's that would not go away saying they were Vista security that I had a serious virus that my computer was at risk, that I had spyware and a worm. I could not open email, asked for permission to open. I never gave permission and kept clicking the x to close the vista security message.
I went to all programs, there is no vista, it wanted me to purchase a security program. My security program is Kaspersky. I am afraid it may be hiding in the background; but there is nothing to indicate it. Do I just wait and see? Why am I spending $ for a security program and end up with a virus anyway? |
I don't think anything is 100% foolproof. You just do the best you can. I'm not a tech so I don't really know.
