Confessions of a Quilter

I sew over pins. On my vintage singer to my Pfaff 2056! Have for years.

JenniePenny 04-04-2013 06:20 AM

I mix stripes with plaids. (The horror!)

I have to have all my fat quarters folded the same way. Even cute bundles from quilt shops need to be unfolded, pressed, and folded my way.

ranger 04-04-2013 06:28 AM

I use only black or white thread for quilting.

Diannia 04-04-2013 06:35 AM

I don't always wash my fabric...and sometimes I even mix washed and unwashed...

I never iron the way you r supposed too......kelly

Kathy T. 04-04-2013 07:10 AM

I just looked at the dust in my house and went upstairs to sew anyway ...
PS You guys are a hoot!

Me too! Having been a garmet sewer there is no way to "ease" a sleeve into the armhole without pins and you sewed over them - slowly - so it can be done. However, I do not have a fancy new machine so don't know if you can do this with them or not.

If I have a wavy border I sew dart in it where the fullness is before sewing it to the quilt. It's almost invisible. A prize winning quilter at Paducah told me how to do that.

I use to sew over pins until the needle hit one just right and it did a lot of damage to the machine. The timing went out and the bobbin case got all messed up. The needle jammed but didn't break and fly out.

barny 04-04-2013 07:45 AM

BellaBoo that is a prizewinner! Wonderful. My little great grandaughter wrote in the dust under my TV. Think I'll leave it there.

Dolphyngyrl 04-04-2013 08:28 AM

I don't pin, I use the lines on my mat

Pat M. 04-04-2013 11:28 AM

I shower with my dog. I have no bad quilting habits, HAHA!

Hey! We've been talking a lot about using Elmer's glue on quilts, wonder how that would work doing this?!

I don't use a 1/4" foot. Ever. I tape a full sticky note pad beside my presser foot and use that as a guide.
I only sew/quilt when I feel like it. And that isn't every day. Or sometimes even every week.
3/4 of my quilting books have been packed away in the attic since I moved into my cottage 4 years ago. Sometimes I miss them, but not often. ;)

I don't put my feed dogs down when I free motion quilt shhhhh!

Luv Quilts and Cats 04-04-2013 03:44 PM

I use sticky notes on the pages of my quilting mags for patterns I want to make. I used to write something on the note to let myself know what the pattern was. Now I just put sticky notes with no writing on them. I guess I want to be surprised when I look through the magazine again.

Confession: I am completely unorganized when I sew. The truth - I'm unorganized about everything, but, I can organize other peoples stuff very well! That's because they have to maintain the organization, not me!

On pins:

Try putting your pins in the fabric vertically (pointing from the front of your machine toward the back) instead of horizontally (pointing from the side of your machine toward the needle), and put them in at least 1/2 - 3/4 inch from the sewing machine needle point. (The pins must be clear of both the foot and the needle.)

This works very well; you don't sew over pins and you don't have to pull the pins out of the fabric until you're done sewing.

Caution - this probably won't work on curves or very small pieces.

I also use elmers washable glue, and that works fine.

QuiltnLady1 04-04-2013 03:56 PM

I sometimes use the selvages when cutting pieces -- contrary to the old wives tales they don't shrink a lot extra -- when I am a bit short of fabric (44-45" fabric not being that wide...). I love the selvages of batiks -- they are dyed the same as the fabric and if I am a little bit short the selvages work -- for others I make sure I only use the selvages for 1/8".

coastienest 04-04-2013 05:29 PM

I can't sew until all my housework is done. Is there something wrong with me?

momto5 04-04-2013 05:43 PM

I sew over pins as well..........EVEN ON MY LONGARM!!! And so far, so good, although I KNOW I'm gonna regret it one of these days...but I'm trying to stop, I promise!

hopetoquilt 04-04-2013 07:14 PM

I don't have a stash. Having anything laying around makes me nervous. i don't cover my machine to protect from dust. I don't pin 99% of the time. For every quilt I make for someone else, I want one for myself. My design wall is the floor. My kids jump on every quilt top to make sure they "work." I haven't had my machine serviced in 6 years. I use the cutting lines on my mat for cutting. I once sewed thru the tip of my finger. Ounch! Btw, the statute of limitations on all offenses has passed. Quilting police will not be taking possession of my sewing machine.

francie yuhas 04-04-2013 07:15 PM

I mix hand and machine quilting on the same quilt. Obviously I'm not a competition quilter.

toolazy 04-04-2013 07:28 PM

I too sew over pins.

Iron? What's an iron? Got 10 fingers for anything that needs flattening a bit, don't have to wait for them to heat up, don't have to unplug them ....

I use my carpenter's L and T-square instead of the quilters' rulers. If I could figure out how to use my mitre box for sewing, I probably would .....

I don't think giving a quilt to a dog is a bad thing. At all.

Me too...My DH said that we need to clean house because HE'S ashamed of it! I told him to go ahead, but leave my stuff alone. (Actually it's not that bad, we have a path to the kitchen, bathrooms, and tv :D)

If that was my rule...I would never get to sew!

deedum 04-05-2013 04:47 AM

You all are a hoot!
Me, I got more machines than I know what to do with. Tucked in cabinets and closets everywhere or so it seems.
I do sew over pins, my old Singers like it that way.
I rarely cook anymore or clean house, as I would rather play in my sewing room. Luckily, dh does all that since he is retired and I am still working.

plainpat 04-05-2013 05:17 AM

Same here, cause I always had company on a "leave the mess day".

I can sew for 2-3days & just close the door on the mess. Then I have to clean the sewing room before sewing more.
Weird :D I know.

Hahaha, I tell people it is okay to write in my dust, just don't date it.

orangeroom 04-05-2013 06:08 AM

I never wash my fabrics before piecing.
I throw out scraps from my finished projects.
I REALLY don't need more quilting books!

BuzzinBumble 04-05-2013 06:28 AM

Love these! it feels good to know i'm not the only one who is quilty as charged.
My confessions? I sometimes fantasize about selling most of my stash... Having too many quilts planned makes me feel pressured... I am often afraid of regular piecing and try to devise a way to turn almost every pattern into paper piecing... I avoid hand sewing because I have no patience and do it poorly. Even though it doesn't sound like it, I love quilting. ;)

bunbytes 04-05-2013 06:44 AM

I am a fabricholic! As I stated in a previous post today, I have used almost 800 comic book boards and have 1000 coming today for the remainder of my stash and future purchases! Oh, the shame! (not)

Wanabee Quiltin 04-05-2013 06:44 AM

I am very neat and clean in my home, everything has its place and there is no clutter. However if you walk into my sewing room, you'd think a tornado had hit.

Caswews 04-05-2013 06:53 AM

Welcome to Quilters True Confessions: A place where no one will judge you as they have done similar or the same things. LOL
Oh my!! I see so many I have done ..<head hanging and heading to corner with coffee cup LOL>

jbj137 04-05-2013 07:07 AM

I do every think "MY WAY".
Sew over pins, make tucks if necessary, etc.

It is my quilt, So I can if I want tooooooooo.

T. 04-05-2013 08:38 AM

I think so. We need to get help for you quickly. ha ha ha

LenaBeena 04-05-2013 08:59 AM

I have a beautiful cross stitch embroidered wall hanging in my sewing room that says: "DO THINE OWN THING !"

I do not use patterns for clothes or quilts because I don't want someone else's idea. Do admit though I like some and then adapt them my own way. Oh sure, patterns are a million times easier to use, but where is the challenge in that?

NanaCindyLou 04-05-2013 09:08 AM

My stash is "stored" on the guest room bed...

Stitchit123 04-05-2013 02:49 PM

I lost my 32lb calico cat Mindy Sue in the sewing cave -I either need to get a non-quilt looking kitty or straighten things up a bit I still have Mindy Sue and I'm still working on a battle plan -for now I'll just close the door if company shows up

chris_quilts 04-05-2013 04:46 PM

I started my spring cleaning by naming the dust bunnies and then went and sewed. My cleaning was complete with the naming ceremony. :D:D

IBQUILTIN 04-05-2013 04:58 PM

If one side of my 1/4" is a little off, I leave it and make a short seam. Once quilted who is going to look
