OK I love my whitetail friends and am more than willing to have them bedding down on my property, but why do they have to eat my lillies. The poor things haven't even gotten to bud yet and all the leaves are munched down to 1"!!! How do I keep these buggers away from my lillies?

stitchinwitch 04-16-2010 04:03 AM

Good Luck! - They DO sell a deer deterent (sp)that is suppose to work. Those deer are beautiful - but they can strip a yard!

marsye 04-16-2010 04:04 AM

LMAO!! Just go out and have a talk with them!!

no1jan 04-16-2010 05:15 AM

I have the same problem with rabbits! Tried moth balls, vinegar, etc. Haven't found anything that works yet.

I guess instead of watching the flowers, we get to watch the animals. :) :) :)

grammyp 04-16-2010 05:18 AM

Have you tried putting wire cages over them? (the flowers, not the deer).

vjengels 04-16-2010 05:20 AM

I have a co-worker that has the same problem.... Deer and Turkeys, the Turkeys get the seeds, and the Deer get the flowers... oh yeah, then the racoons & Bears get the bird feeders.... She says when there's a mountain lion alert in her neighborhood, she doesn't have a problem with any of those.... maybe you need a mountain lion. LOL!

Pam 04-16-2010 05:26 AM

Darn racoons got into my hen house and did away with all of them. Need any racoons?

sewcrafty 04-16-2010 06:35 AM

Would you believe I'm 10 min. outside the state capital and I have deers, foxes, BEARS, moose, etc.!!! Need to find out how to save my plants. The deers the first year we were here and we had the snowfall from H*** (broke actual records), ate my arborvities!! When spring came there was 2 ft of bushy shrub at the bottom, then 4ft of eat bushes right to the stems, then it bushed out again and went to a peek! They looked like half eaten corn on the cobs!!! Starting to grow back!! Poor things!!

craftybear 04-16-2010 06:39 AM

oh my, that is terrible, I hope you can figure out what to do

Omg, I had that happen!! I spent days getting my planter ready even arranged the stones in a peace sign pattern and put the plants inside. The deer climbed up there and ate the center plant. This picture is at our old house.

Peace sign flowerbed.

Don't know if it works for deer, but I've read that red pepper sprinkled around plants is supposed to keep squirrels away.

GET A BIG OUTSIDE DOG

Marjpf 04-16-2010 07:57 AM

My sister has the same problem with rose bushes. She still hasn't found a solution.

redrummy 04-16-2010 08:08 AM

I have heard that bar soap placesd around plants we want the animals to leave alone works. I brush my dog, and spread the fur around the area, and the deer stay away. 1st year I lived here, I planted 100 tulip bulbs. Wrong thing to do. Deer love them. I think I saw 3 tulips bloom. They ate thefolage of the rest as they were growing.

amandasgramma 04-16-2010 08:27 AM

I've tried to figure out why they have a whole FOREST around my house, wildflowers out, and they come in and eat my flowers! AND they poop in the flower bed!!! Talk about adding insult to injury!!!!

Now that is adding insult to injury!!!!  LMAO A friend said to call Fish and Game, so I did. These are their suggestions:

1)Try to put the most fragrant (the smellist) soap still in its wrapper around the bed. They suggested something like Irish Spring.

2)When you brush your dog/cat put the hair into plastic bags with liquid dish soap.

3) Cayanne pepper can be sprinkled on the plants themselves, but is especially good in flower beds where bulbs are so that the chipmunks will stay away.

4)Solar lighting. The deer don't like going around places that are lit-up.

5)If none of the above work come on down and they'll give a sample of some kind of commercial deer deterent and solar powered blinking red light that's suppose to keep them away.

We'll see!! I'll try the cheap way first.

jljquilter 04-16-2010 10:23 AM

Now we know why there is hunting season. Wisconsin is also a great place to get to know deer when you hit them with your car!

quiltluvr 04-16-2010 10:48 AM

I've heard posting "Keep Out" and "No Trespassing" signs are effective.  Darn thing is the deer can't read!!!

Seriously, hope the other suggestions work to save your plants.

granniebj 04-16-2010 03:09 PM

I live in 4 acres of woods, and have problems with all sorts of critters. To be honest, I've pretty much given up! lol

2 Doods 04-16-2010 03:20 PM

We have the same problem on our 29 acres. Try the Irish Spring soap. It has to be the original scent. I cut it into large slices and made little net bags. We hang them in the trees. So far it has worked. The deer just about ate my whole Dogwood tree one year. I put the soap bag out and the tree came back.
I use it in our fruit trees too. The deer do not like the scent so you have to keep fresh soap out. Pretty cheap! Hope it works for you.

I also ask at the nurseries when I buy things...Heather, Rosemary, Lavender...they have done well here. The deer prefer other things and so far have left those alone.

Good luck!

blackberryhill1 04-17-2010 05:31 AM

Try a product called Deer Fence. If you can't find it at a local garden shop, it is available online. The concentrated form is more economical to use buy not cheap. I have deer that eat my lilies among other things. This is the only product I have found that works. It smells bad but the odar goes away quickly. I spray my plants about every two weeks or so with this unless there is heavy rain - then more often. Good luck.

Zephyr 04-17-2010 06:04 AM

We always used to put dried blood (purchased at garden shops) to keep the rabbits out of our garden and flowers. You might look for it and read the label.

My girlfriend lives in one of the eastern suburbs of Denver Colorado. One year she had to have wild life removal specialists come remove a racoon family from her chimney. Last year it was squirrels in her attic. She is hoping the momma fox she's seen in the neighborhood takes up residence in her yard to keep the other critters away. The western suburbs of Denver have even more wild life with bears and mountain lions frequent vistors.

So far about the only wild life in my yard is rabbits. I know there are coyotes in the area though.

Ramona Byrd 04-17-2010 04:26 PM

Don't know if it works for deer, but I've read that red pepper sprinkled around plants is supposed to keep squirrels away.
-------------------------------------------------
At one time I had a lovely, picture perfect Doberman Pinscher,
who, unfortunately, was mentally retarded, and always hated
any plant (or even bikes) that we put in the back yard or dog
yard. She would eat the plants down to the bare branches and
spit out the leaves. The only thing that stopped her was hosing
off the plants and sprinkling Cayenne Pepper on them. That
was the only thing that got the message to my poor Hilda.

adrianlee 04-17-2010 06:16 PM

We live out in the country and I tried growing a garden. The deer and the bear loved it. My sisters grow gardens but they have major $$$ in fences. Last year we had a moose stroll through our yard like if she owned the place. I used to have tulips and roses. I have Iris now and they seem to be left alone.

KarenSimon 04-17-2010 07:08 PM

I've heard human urine is a deterrent for some critters like rabbits. Maybe that would work...

twistedsheets 04-17-2010 11:37 PM

check out www.critterrepellent.com has stuff starting at $14.95 for deer and all kinds of wildlife they call it shakeaway and you put it around your plants

Soooooooooo when hubby needs to go - he will take a stroll?? hahah

stitchinwitch 04-18-2010 05:17 AM

My friend here in the Ozarks told me about this concoction that works for them. It is a combo of cayenne pepper, tobassco sauce, dried mustard. and hot sauce sprinkled in the flower beds. She said she has not had any problem since using that. Maybe google "deer deterrent home made remedies" It just might give you additional recipies that won't break the bank!

HA! Funny! - do you ever feel you are being spied on?? The ad on this page had shown deer deterrent! How much privacy do we have???????????I think NONE - it makes me wonder HOW they can advertise this on this particular thread, doesn't it?

Grandma Phyl 04-18-2010 08:12 AM

My daughter ties plastic bags like you get from Walmart on a stick the wind blowing them seem to scare the deer and stop them from eating her flowers, works for her in Missouri

Betty K 04-18-2010 08:43 AM

Last week I was on a trip & 2 friends were discussing the problems they were having in VA with deer eating flowers. Neighbors of one didn't care for the flexible fencing she had draped around the shrubs & they both were frustrated with repellents washing off each time it rained. I googled & found that there's something called 'Deer Out' that doesn't wash off & is natural repellent. They were going to check into it.

We live out in the country and sometimes to save himself a trip back into the house if he is working outside, my hubby sometimes mind you, calls this 'marking spot'. If the deer see him I'm sure they are quickly averting their eyes.

mrsjdt 04-18-2010 01:47 PM

Don't know if it works but---I was told to put human hair around the plants. It was suggested I ask my hairdresser to save hair for me..... object being...animals don't like human contact. I haven't had a problem since I started "feeding the turkeys" in the far corner of the yard.
