Delivery guy and broke zipper.

I had furniture delivered today. The young guy saw my sewing machine and said. May I pay you to put a zipper in my favorite work jacket? I really like the jacket and can't find another like it. I secretly moaned inside but said I'll have to look at it first. He said ok I have it in the truck. LOL It was a regular metal zipper. He had to put together some of the furniture so I took the jacket, pulled a new zipper out of my stash, cut off the teeth of his old zipper and sewed the new one onto the old zipper. Took longer threading my machine and changing the needle size. I handed it to him on his way out. He was stunned. You really did this? That fast? How much do I owe you? It's wonderful. Thank you so much. I said this will be your tip. He said his wife won't believe it and he needs to buy her a sewing machine. LOL

That was so kind of you. He'll be telling everyone about what a nice thing this customer did for him.

LOL, what a great story, and how very kind of you. Talk about making someone's day!

IrishgalfromNJ 03-28-2019 10:10 AM

What a cute story. I hope his wife appreciates the sewing machine. LOL

BETTY62 03-28-2019 10:11 AM

I was not aware of this little trick and really appreciate your sharing this post. I have a jacket that needs the same repair so guess what i will be doing later this afternoon. You just made my day!

sewbizgirl 03-28-2019 10:27 AM

I never would have thought to sew onto the old zipper tape... You're so smart!

Rhonda K 03-28-2019 10:37 AM

You sure made his day! What a story he has to tell his wife when he gets home today. It is truly the kindness of strangers that make our day!

LavenderBlue 03-28-2019 10:39 AM

What a cute story to put a smile on our face!

Tothill 03-28-2019 10:48 AM

You did a wonderful thing today. That is the true meaning of paying it forward.

I have done the same trick of cutting off zipper teeth and sewing anew zipper to the tape. It is not always the prettiest repair, but is much easier than opening up all the seams.

Tartan 03-28-2019 11:31 AM

So nice of you to do that for him. I will do just about anything to avoid putting in a new zipper too.

Stitchnripper 03-28-2019 11:44 AM

That is a great story. I learned about that zipper trick on Sewing with Nancy. And I had to laugh about buying his wife a sewing machine. I'm guessing she will be less than thrilled, if he goes so far as to do it.

Jordan 03-28-2019 12:38 PM

Kudos to you for such a kind gesture.

Onebyone 03-28-2019 12:56 PM

DH would always need a new zippers in his work and hunting jackets. That trick makes the heavy duty sewn zippers a breeze to fix. Taking a zipper out of a Carhartts? Not me.

MaryMo 03-28-2019 01:36 PM

What a fascinating story both of you will have to tell! I was also impressed how you fixed his zipper, such an easy method of repair. Thank you for sharing One-by-One.

SillySusan 03-28-2019 01:44 PM

Yes! I learned the trick on a Nancy Z. show also, and replaced a broken zipper on my son's very favorite of all lifetime Carolina Panthers jacket! Easy, but so magic-like!!

NZquilter 03-28-2019 03:15 PM

What a great story! And a great trick! Thanks for doing that for the delivery guy. He will always remember your kindness!

tranum 03-28-2019 05:34 PM

I was baking a couple loaves of frozen bread when 2 guys delivered my washer & dryer. They commented on the good smell so when the bread was still warm, I set plates, butter and the knife on the counter and told them to help themselves. They did and thanked me many times.

Homespun 03-28-2019 05:47 PM

I love that zipper trick! Thank you.

Teen 03-28-2019 05:50 PM

What a precious story!! Made my day..... And, clever fix...amazing!

zozee 03-28-2019 07:26 PM

What a great story! I'm sure that having that zipper put in his jacket was better than a tip! You got new furniture and good feels all in one fell swoop.

jmoore 03-29-2019 03:19 AM

Delightful read this morning and what a good deed. I’m sure he will be sharing the story of your sewing talent with his friends and family.

lindaschipper 03-29-2019 03:37 AM

Like the majority of us, I've never heard of this zipper trick. I'll have to try to remember it for future reference.

luci4 03-29-2019 04:31 AM

I hate doing zippers, but when I have to, this is how I do it.

maryb119 03-29-2019 04:54 AM

Great job! He will appreciate your talent. Thanks for sharing the tip. My SIL is a welder and asks me often to replace a zipper. I will remember that trick.

bneuen 03-29-2019 04:59 AM

I love your story. It’s so nice to hear of someone doing an act of kindness when we hear so many negative stories. Yesterday, I had a nice thing happen to me (not sewing related). My car wash ticket had expired and I thought I would stop in and see if they would reissue it for me. They reissued with no problem. I left the car wash with a clean vehicle and feeling like there are still nice people and places to do business. It’s the little things that make a difference.

Doggramma 03-29-2019 06:02 AM

That’s so nice of you! Once someone I worked with asked me to do that, and I said yes reluctantly. They brought me a dirty well-worn jacket. I put in the zipper and was glad it wasn’t too difficult. What I don’t like about non-quilting sewing or ironing is everything is set up for quilting. So I don’t like redoing the needles or thread or taking the Big Board off the ironing board. Otherwise I wouldn’t mind so much.

Kitsie 03-29-2019 06:45 AM

Huh! never knew about that way of replacing one! My favorite jacket has the same issue! Unfortunately I live in the Pacific NW so I'll have to try it myself!
Thank you!

indymta 03-29-2019 07:11 AM

What a very nice thing to do for someone! It is nice to read about people doing something nice for another without expecting anything in return. You made me smile. As an aside, what a great idea about the zipper. I never would have thought to do that. I will keep that tip.

Bobbielinks 03-29-2019 07:37 AM

I'm 70 and still learning something new everyday!! I had never thought about just cutting the teeth off a broken zipper and sewing a new zipper in its place. Thank you a million times over!!! Now off the find that box of zippers that I thought I would never ever use. Oh, I also think that young man will think of you many times with a smile on his face.

klswift 03-29-2019 08:47 AM

After having raised 6 brothers and then my own kids, I learned the trick about just cutting off the teeth and attaching a new zipper. I can not count the number of sweatshirts and jackets that I used a seam ripper on and then fought with the folds to insert the new one.

Friday1961 03-29-2019 09:47 AM

Very kind of you to do that for him! I understand the "secretly moaned inside" feeling, though! Those who don't sew both underestimate and overestimate our desire to "sew", lol. His surprise and obvious appreciation was a nice reward.

Nor had I! What a cool trick!

I admire OnebyOne's restraint in not saying to him: "Why not buy Yourself a sewing machine?" LOL!

Mariposa 03-29-2019 10:50 AM

Sweet of you to fix his jacket! I'm another that has learned a new tip today. :)

Chester the bunny 03-29-2019 12:07 PM

Thank you for that wonderful tip! And for being a blessing to the delivery guy.

Cheshirepat 03-29-2019 01:15 PM

Aw, I'm sure he'll thank you mentally every time he puts that jacket on! What a great story, and a smart quick-fix!

Jingle 03-29-2019 02:56 PM

So nice of you to fix his jacket.

betthequilter 03-29-2019 03:03 PM

What a nice story. You'll never know how many people he'll tell about you and your kindness.

busy fingers 03-29-2019 05:14 PM

What a nice thing to do and it made his day.

Jules51 03-29-2019 07:42 PM

What a wonderful deed you did, and I love the zipper trick. I have one to do one my husband's old military winter coat, maybe I can get it done for next years snowy days.:)
